You came right up when I entered the fan info and how to clean! It was perfect! I was able to get the fans super clean! Thank you!

Great video - thanks for the insight. I was about to replace mine, but it is running sweetly now... :-) A couple of comments: the brass bushing on the shaft is a compression fitting to secure the fan to the shaft. Once the center cover is removed (typically it is labeled with the fan voltage), the nut should be loosened slightly, at which point its "grip" on the shaft will loosen also, and you can easily remove the fan with the brass bushing still inside. You could probably glue the brass fitting back inside the fan body rather than using those rubber bands... but hey, whatever works. After cleaning, I also used some McLube "One Drop" - one drop each end of the motor. Seems to be great stuff. Went from squeaky to silky smooth. Really appreciate the vid! Fair winds... J.

Thank you. After 10 years my Hella fan was making rattling noises like a bushing/bearing was shot. I was about to change it out with my spare fan when I ran across this video. I figured what the heck, I'll give it a shot, what have I got to lose. Now my fan is purring like a kitten again.

I was glad to have found this video as I need to take one of these apart. However, after the fact I found several aspects of this video just plain wrong. First, you don't just pull the fan off the motor. Once the plastic hub cap is removed there's a brass nut that must be removed; this nut threads onto a brass collet that grasps the motor shaft. Then, you don't just push the motor assembly out the back, you will likely damage something. There are two "fish hook" features in the molded housing. Reach in with a screwdriver and spread them out so they release. The motor and PCB board assembly, and the On/Low/High knob will fall out. I suspect the poster's unit was previously damaged, which is why his can be taken apart his way, or perhaps it's just a different model.

This worked great on three of my fans but two of them were newer models that had a capacitor just above the contacts. After cleaning both fans thoroughly, the capacitor blew with a loud pop and smoke. The first one, I used WD 40 with, the second I used electronic cleaner with the same results. If you have a newer fan, you risk destroying it with this method.

95% of the time a capacitor blows because it is hooked up with reverse polarity. So maybe marking the wires would help eliminate the problem.

Which makes sense but every single fan that I have done which is 7 of them blew the capacitors after I insured polarity was correct. (I'm a bomb tech so I know a thing or two about dc current).

I'm about to clean a few Hella fans on mine, will keep an eye out for a capacitor... do you have a suggestion for an alternate method?

Was replacing the cap enough to fix them or was the problem elsewhere? And as a bomb technician, how many explosions does it take for you to change your method? 8? ;)

Thanks, our last boat had several Hella fans, I'm installing one on our RV, there two white wires, one with a black strip, which one is positive? While this came with a polarity tag its fell off before connection. Any help is appreciated.

It would appear the fan is polarity sensitive. Positive goes to positive. Neg to neg.

On my fan motor the resistor on the motor side of circuit is burnt. It still runs but I could smell it heating up and discolored the board itself. It got hot enought so that I can't see what I should replace it with. Do you have the color code for that resistor. This fan is well worth fixing and I hate to part with it over one little resistor

Can you measure the value of the resistor with a tester? A KZitem search will show you how to do this. You can buy a cheap tester for a couple of dollars that will do the job.
