Sometimes, when you put a bulb in a socket, it doesn't work quite right, flickers, or goes on and off. Some people like to go in the socket and bend the prong in the center up. Sometimes that's not an option. When that happens, you can fix the tip of the candelabra bulb with some solder and a soldering iron.
The lights on my house take 3 candelabra-base bulbs, and I have 2 of them, for a total of 6 bulbs. While the incandescent bulbs look great and provide omni-directional light, using 240 watts over a period of 8-10 hours for light I'm never going to see is not going to be an option.
While I'm not a big proponent of CFL bulbs, and I REFUSE to purchase LED bulbs (as they will fail well before the warranty states, and you won't get satisfaction), I do use CFL bulbs in these fixtures. However, CFL bulbs with candelabra bases have become as rare as the proverbial hen's teeth in recent times. As such it was time to find a different way to light the front of the house.
I found a set of candelabra base to normal medium base adapters on Amazon for cheap. I picked up some cheap medium base CFL bulbs from the local big-box store, for under a dollar a bulb, and put them in the outdoor fixtures to find they didn't work.
After retouching the tips on the adapters with a soldering iron and solder, all 6 bulbs are running and are super-bright. The video shows how to re-touch the tips of bulbs, which will work either with candelabra bulbs or medium-base bulbs.
