Hi Dave, Another great instructional video. Here's what I do to test the remote control since I don't have a night vision camera. I aim the remote control within an inch or two at an AM radio with the frequency just a bit off from the station and you'll hear interference over the speaker every time you press a button on the remote control. Just to be clear, this only works with the radio set to AM.

I use my Panasonic RF-511 to check for RF radiation all over the house to check for noisy devices, like switch mode power supplies (wall warts). You would be surprised how many wi-fi and electronic devices on standby there are in your house which are active all the time and transmitting electronic noise pollution. Did not know a remote control would emit that much RF noise, interesting.....

Yeah, I have an old CRT TV that uses the "clicker" type remote. I used to jingle my house keys to make the TV go haywire as the way the remote worked is that the clicker would strike a metal tongue inside the remote and it made a high tone sound that would be detected by a mic on the TV thus allowing remote operation. Each button would strike different tones for channel change, volume, power etc. So jingling my keys would produce these tones and the TV would pick them up and start changing channels, power on and off and going loud n quiet etc. Great fun.

I made a circuit to test remotes using IR sensor from TV and coupling that to an audio Amp. Nothing critical for the Amp. Lm 386, Discrete Amp whatever. Usually the ir sensor runs on 5v. This comes in handy for programming universal remotes. Different brands make different sound. So you tell if you were switching codes. I found it handy to show customers if their remote was working or not.

Tune an AM radio to around 700kHz. When pushing the buttons on a good remote, you should hear "noise" from the radio speaker. If no noise is heard vary the tuning up or down a couple of kHz.

I have a remote for a 1988 Panasonic TV, which, on closer inspection looks as though something has been spilled into it. Turns out the rubber membrane has started to break down with age, and is leeching a residue out onto the PCB. After cleaning it up multiple times I gave up and stored it away in bits, as a universal one does more than I need it to. Power On - Select A/V - Adjust Volume - Power Off. That's all I need the blasted thing for!

Hope you washed the case halves as well, they get nasty dirty as well. I also tend to look and see if the small capacitor in there can get replaced by a larger value, makes the range with weak batteries longer, or just makes the remote more reliable in daytime, as the IR signal is stronger than the low current the batteries can supply.

I remember, many years ago, my father getting consistently frustrated with a remote - finding that if he whacked it against his palm it would usually cooperate (regardless of battery age/condition). Until it got worse and worse, requiring luck and a stronger whack (or two or three or...) Must have had a cold solder joint on the LED/emitter beforehand... Finally one day it was resoldered and worked like a champ! Whoops, easy fix!

Unless they have an infrared filter on the lens, all video cameras can see IR light, whether they have "night shot" mode or not. There are even little cards one can purchase with a coating on them that can detect it just for testing IR remote light testing.

I found that IPA don't harm remote controls PCBs - for sure more modern ones. For rubber membrane soap and water is the best way to go. I've tried also IPA and q-tips on membrane - very gently to not remove a lot of conductive carbon - yes, for sure it can remove it and destroy a remote. Some more used remotes can have conductive carbon layer worn out. You can use some kind of conductive paint or cut old membrane pads and glue in a new ones.

The contamination is it silicone oil leached from the rubber keys ? I have taken some apart that were full of this oily stuff, I did wonder if it was greasy hands that caused it to leach. UK based controls that I have had the experience of. I did read one article that said it was sometimes shortcuts in the manufacturing curing process of the rubber keypads ?

When I need to pry something open like this, I usually just use a guitar pick. With a screwdriver I oftentimes damage the casing unnecessarily. Also, when you no longer have a specific remote control, you can use a phone with an IR blaster. There is this Android app called irplus, which allows you to mimic vast majority of remotes sold worldwide. I use this to disable autotracking of old VCRs I do not have remotes for. Handy if you need to adjust the tape guides.
