A reasonably dull video showing me replacing the carbon block brushes of our Miele T9800 front loading vented laundry tumble dryer, mostly for those of us who are looking to see what's under the hood before taking the plunge and committing to a Saturday of adventuresome repairing. These appliances are getting old and tired, but their parts are mostly still available and they still get the clothes dry reliably.
These brushes come from Miele parts department as a kit, part number 5153702, which contains both brushes mounted in a plastic bracket, a pair of leads, a couple of ferrules and a pair of replacement spade connectors. Somewhat confusingly, the package itself uses the singular form "carbon brush", but don't be fooled. It's a pair of brushes. Don't make the same mistake I did and buy two of these parts.
The replacement is fairly simple. These brushes wear out over time and when they're almost finished, they begin to knock against a screw head. I think it's designed to do this as a signal to a technician that this is indeed what needs to be repaired. (I can't think of any other reason the one particular screw head is so conspicuously raised, placed and shaped the way it is.)
The spade connectors are a bit difficult to pull out, but not overly so, and when reconnecting them it helps to have a pair of good needle nose pliers. Be careful when pressing, however, that you don't slip and stab yourself. I didn't do it this time, but I've done it before. They''ll gouge your finger nicely.
I don't blather on about safety in this vid. Use your common sense, unplug the dryer and call a technician if you're uncertain what to do (or otherwise risk averse.) 240 Vac can kill you if you're not careful.
