Dragon Majesty ETB was around $35 if you got the pre-release online at the right time, same with shining Legends last year, retail on both was $50. Same with Generations it's been a common theme 3 years in a row now since it's not a regular set and you can't buy regular booster boxes that's why it has a higher premium.

I agree with you. I focus on collecting the older stuff and pickup 4 packs of the newer sets to add to my sealed collection but thats as far as I go with the newer stuff. Newer product just has no appeal. Rudy may not have experience with the older sets and thats why he sees it the way he does. Pokemon can be seen as more of a collectible because of the phrase"Gotta Catch'Em All"which is stuck in our heads since its inception and has probably influenced some to collect.

I don't think modern is in any danger. It's meant for the players, not the collectors. I don't know many people who are into collecting modern in the sense that they want to make money off it. Unless someone is buying guzma's by the dozens for resale. The hobby is still healthy, as you said, the red's Pikachu ordeal. Modern is just very forgettable. There's the odd card people remember, like Lele being top dog for a while, and collectors going for RR charizards. But it's a players market here. The collectors will stay with the money, and the vintage is where the money is. For the most part. Great fucking video man, I love your shit.

I disagree with that statement. It falls short due to the infinite growth fallacy; if something is only going up in value because people think it will go up in value, it's probably a bubble. At least old MTG cards have some utility to back them. All Pokemon has is greater fools.
@thecasualcanuckfox3836
5 жыл бұрын
@@mtgdog5657 I have to agree with you. But only regarding current Pokemon inflation. In terms of vintage Pokemon cards, that value goes up due to rarity, not due to a bubble. There's only a finite amount of product, and a large market looking for it. In terms of current product, there is a lot of it, and also lot of people searching for it. The market itself is fairly saturated, and the Pokemon company continues to pump out product. It's not worth much, but the vintage stuff will always hold it's value. To the fact that it's limited to begin with.

@MTGDog So are baseball collectors "greater fools"? You should research the competitive side of pokemon. Not only do they have a tcg, they have vcg and pokken. MTG is not any safer than any other collectible. The "utility" is based in emotion, not necessity.

@@alolanmuk4028 I'm aware the bulk of Nintendo/pokemon sales come from the current format. That's why I said it's not in any danger. I was I stating there's a difference between collectors and players. And neither is wrong. I couldn't put my hat in, I'm terms of baseball or other sports franchise cards, as I have no idea how it goes. In terms of magic, I have a few friends who only play the game, and tell me how much a decent standard deck goes for. My Forte is literally pokemon. That's what I know. Lots of excellent points here Scott. Modern is in a stabilization period mostly due to the issues at the distribution level. Probably more valleys than hills in recent years, but that's not a bad thing that's just how it works. The hobby itself is bigger than it ever has been (at least in the secondary market). Who knows, one day we might actually get fantastic card stock and modern will explode again. Can't wait to see the Rudy video where talks on an 80's cell phone and screams at an imaginary investor to buy Pokemon cards like it's the New York stock exchange. Knowing Rudy, this is highly possible. PS: I want your boxed pokemon stadium 1.

6 Months ago, I bought a NM Base Set 1999 Charizard/Glurak for around 50€, right now the cheapest listed is 80€. Last week, a 2016 NM Evolutions holo and reverse holo foil Glurak earned 108€ combined on auction. For obvious reasons, that is literally unbelievable to me. Pokemon really underestimated the demand especially in germany. I still cant wrap my head around that auction, it just had to be artificial bid increase and it would be closed before ending, but no - it sold. Some people here spend more money on Evolutions than Base Set and if it is about the nostalgia, I just do not understand that.

I think of a lot of people in the magic world fail to see through the rose colored glasses and past the fact that pokemon is a massively successful hobby, on some levels more so than magic itself. Oversaturation of TCG products is why Pokémon hype is declining. I used to like collecting Pokémon cards 5 years ago when a tin or collection box releases once in a while and being able to complete sets without heavily relying on online stores for cards. Nowadays the sets are WAY TOO MASSIVE, there are way too many collection boxes and sets with 50 ultra rares is definitely going to empty my wallet and break the bank. Pokémon should consider reducing the size of sets to those back in Black and White era.
