In Ruth Pt 5: Restored to Fullness, Walking The Text Founder Brad Gray unpacks what’s happening in the climactic scene of the book of Ruth. In the city gate, two of Naomi’s kinsman redeemers stand poised to provide the rescue she and Ruth desperately need. What unfolds seems confusing, but as we’ll see, it makes a ton of sense on the culture of the day. And what we’ll also see is that Boaz’s actions are costly and deeply compelling.
In ancient times, a city gate was more than a place of traffic. It was the administrative center of the town where legal and business matters were settled by judges and elders. Here, two male family members discuss who will serve as the kinsman redeemer for Naomi in order to preserve Elimelech’s land and name. By doing so, Elimelech’s land would be restored to Naomi under the protective cover of a male relative.
But the first relative changes his mind after learning about Ruth. Apparently, having a child with Ruth would diminish his own inheritance. Boaz, on the other hand, agrees to do so, knowing full well what it will cost him. By taking responsibility for another, Boaz embodies the fidelity, integrity, and generosity of God’s covenant love. By the end of Ruth Pt 5: Restored to Fullness, you’ll be challenged to share in this costly and compelling love and to ask if God’s redemption for someone else might just look a whole lot like you?
