I've done this myself on multiple friction surfaces with zero issues and very good results. You are removing very little material so a heavy flywheel, disk, or drum will not be out of balance so long as you don't concentrate on one spot. Is it the best? No, but when you have a tight budget it is way better than putting glazed parts back together. If you have the money professional machining and new parts are better. Lot of rich haters out there I guess.

I put my flywheel on an old alternator so I can spin it. Much more consistent when the tool is flat and stationary. I use a light abrasive so as not to remove much material.

Yes this should be done parallel with a block so its perfectly flat. He probably only removed 15 grams of material. That is not going to knock a 35 lbs. Flywheel out of balance. All that is going to happen is there will be high/low spots with heat checking.

I've done this a few times with less powerful tools. Unless you want to be on it for over an hour, a high speed tool is pretty handy, it's normal to go through a few disks with a R.O. sander or dremel, albeit at a finer grit. Don't see issue with this other than possible depth if someone isn't so handy.

Damz Trank Yeah I didn’t take much off, I do brake rotors like this as well and I get a lot more aggressive with them (they are normally in worse shape then a flywheel ever would be) and I still always have good results with the process. Sometimes I use a 60grit flap disk on an angle grinder to take it down faster on the brake rotors but then you do have to be careful, this tool is actually pretty slow because I’m only running it around 10,000rpm here.

we used to do that back in the day with a scotchbrite or some sand paper to clean it up. but sooner or later the clutch started chattering. If that isn't a problem for you then by all means do it. but, if safety is high on your list, have it shaved or replaced. do the job right.

yes Jason picked up more then you can count toes on your feet and fingers on your hands including flywheels on trucks tractors and race cars just hope not to many follow your suggestions on surface grinding . i,am not knocking your idea but unless people are aware of what can go wrong and the danger involved they can get seriously hurt. to those who watch this video, remember the machines that surface grind flywheels are worth a few thousand dollars, do you think a $50.00 dollar machine made to machine timber can do just as good ?

You ever seen what happens when a clutch disk shatters from not having proper clamping because of an uneven surface? Obviously not. Dont worry, when you lose a foot or part of your leg, you wont have to worry about that clutch anymore. Because it's hard to drive manual when you need hand controls.

Matthew Tarvin Yes the 71hp powerhouse this clutch went on is probably just waiting to shear it apart!😂 I don’t expect people to start using this method on their performance builds, it more to help people keep their daily driven junker going a few extra miles.😉

I'm tired of all the people telling everyone to be so cautious with everything and that you need a professional tool.... and that you cant do anything without spending money. If a person listened to you guys and you were building an engine It would cost thousands of dollars more than it should, and you might as well just buy it new. It makes doing mechanics all about money. Real mechanics who fix lots of stuff figure it out for free, unless you need money to do everything. I live way out in the woods so were not going to town for this. I would have the clutch back in my car driving past you by time you got your flywheel back from the machine shop. And it will perform just as good. Use your brain. I have wasted so much money and time trying to be overly cautious with automotive engineering. I don't believe anyone anymore because they don't know science. Just figure it out. Almost none of these people have any real experience with physics or engineering. They don't understand what is really going on with the physics. So don't listen to them. Their knowledge is based on experience not understanding the physics. Should we get out an electron microscope to make sure the surface is perfectly flat? Its just to get some grip between two surfaces. They get more grip when they are not polished flat. Thats it. I don't see how you could ever get the flywheel out of balance you would have to sit there in one spot for a long time just to make a dent. The machine shop is trying to make money that is why they made up this bullshit about out of balance. Watch out for being overly cautious in automotive stuff we have rich people working on stuff too.

1 the part is not secured to anything, 2 router is way to fast. 3 router is not designed for end work cutters cut on side ,if that sanding disc digs in to edge you have no hope of holding it iam not knocking you just seen so many guys get hurt from using tools they think are safe to use, you may get away with using a few times but 1 day it will get you, remember even a simple angle grinder can kill you if it hits you in the wrong place.
@CarswithNash
6 жыл бұрын
John Gurney Nope sorry you’re wrong, the router is variable speed, I had it running @ 11’000rpms & the disc was rated for 22,000rpms & is designed for a tool that spins that fast. The router was designed to cut both ways since it’s a “plunge” router. It’s also extremely easy to handle & not powerful enough to do any of the stuff your suggesting. I’ve used that tool plenty, it’s perfectly safe.
