Not everybody has the same Taste in Music. Owning a Record Player doesn't mean we need to own every Album ever made. This is what I don't understand about Retro Game Collectors. Just because it exists they must own it. I collect what I'm interested in and what I'm Nostalgic for. That's it

For me, the Hobby was to learn about it. I am curious on how does it look (design). How is it constructed? Etc. I also wanted this challenge to reach higher and hi her goals, achievements of you will. One guy said it right: no matter how rare it is, once you have it it is kinda meaningless. Owning it takes away all the fun and joy and excitement that you once had. Nothing changed, but in your mind you know: the hunt is over and how can I now top what I have, and you see, it will snowball.

100% agree. I collected from 2011 to about 2019. Started chasing nostalgia, ended up hoarding dumb stuff. Nobody in my family questioned it. When I finally did some introspection, I realized that I was fighting depression and anxiety with escapism. I wasn’t getting any enjoyment from limited run and sealed games. I’ve got $25K worth of stuff that realistically could be emulated for $250. Ive started selling stuff. And I can see it on the faces of people buying from me. They are doing exactly what I used to but they are still blind to their personal issues. Talking about CIB and WATA grading… it’s sad. This hobby is a mask for ocd, anxiety, depression, childhood trauma, resource scarcity, and addiction sublimation.

Emulation is way better than it use to be. Back in the day you needed a bulky desktop to emulate. Now these cheap handhelds can emulate anything. I remember the pain of downloading a ROM on my windows98 computer with dialup. 2016 I switched to modded psvita. I see people using the Backbone controller now on their phones.
@kellysooth602

@@kennyadvocat yea, emulation is so much better today. I’ve always dabbled in it. Even when collecting physical games I would usually just emulate them (in order to keep things sealed, or so that I could take more games on the go) Now I use a modded 3DS with almost 200GB of my favorite games. That together with the insanely high retro game prices. There is really no sane reason to collect games nowadays. Luckily I collected when things were cheap. I’ve already made all my money back and I still have tons of stuff to sell.

Everything in this world is full of work. If someone can successfully collect and then sell for a profit while actually enjoying or using the games as pleasure, this is the best outcome. Not only are you then using your time for what you enjoy, but then also profiting. I think a huge issue is that many do not have an exit strategy. That or they don't get the same enjoyment anymore but are deceived that they are. If you are collecting with the intent to keep the games forever , that is probably your attempt to cope . You never really get to keep things forever , it's just your turn. Be a good stewart.

Collections should be fluid in my opinion. Meaning you have or get piece and enjoy it. Once you stop playing it or no longer want it, you can trade/sell it to fund something else in the hobby or a different hobby. I’ve always felt collections are personal. Once people start sharing on Facebook or filming their stuff and posting it, they are no longer collecting for themselves anymore. They are collecting for other peoples validation. They lost the plot of that makes sense.

That is very true. I can see showing off the collection at some.point because you worked so hard to get it but I know a lot of KZitemrs who won't admit it, but hunt solely for content and views now and more than likely fake videos for their "collection". The same situation about FOMO when it comes to retro games, is now happening with modern games. Because in addition to the enormous backlog of past games through the history, there are now more games than ever that gets a very limited run through a lot of the smaller publishers. It's impossible to keep up with a situation like that, most of us has a normal income and family to feed etc. I spent more than i should for a very long time on video games, but suddenly i realized i wasn't playing half of the stuff i bought it was just to fill up the shelves. These days i buy only the games i intend to play and i'm not chasing games anymore.

I collected games from about 1998 till 2017. Started with SNES games (the system i had growing up), but moved onto covering all consoles because they were available cheap. I didn't play them all of course, but I loved owning them. I saw every one of them as a small piece of history of the art. I cherished the boxes, or even just the disc in some cases. I never went beyond my means and to be fair games were not nearly as expensive as they've become now. However I never fully realised my collection properly as I had nowhere to display it. After years of them being in plastic tubs i decided what's the point, sold them and bought a TV, sound system and the latest consoles with the proceeds. Since then I've been very much into emulation and collected them all again, digitally. This has been and remains a total joy. You can still appreciate all the artwork using a good frontend to your collection (Launchbox was my first goto), it's incredibly convenient, it takes up no space, amd you've no guilt regarding "wasting" money. If your collection is creating unpleasant compulsions in you, it's not a hobby any longer. And there are alternatives if you just want to play. I've played way more games this way than I ever did owning physical copies.

There's been several people talking about rampant consumerism and you relaying that to addiction is like, yeah that's spot on. I think the real difference between collecting in hoarding is when it really starts to be detrimental to your well being. Games can take up SO much space and QUICK too! I think its important to set goals, for playing and collecting, but also for your space! Furniture, shelving, displays all I think are under discussed in the space. A modest collection can still look amazing on the shelf if you take pride in your space, which cant happen if you have a hoarding problem. Great vid thanks for uploading it

Good video. I grew wise to the fact that many channels post “pick ups” videos but never videos of them playing anything. I even remember one particular KZitemr I watch doing a ranking series where he then admitted he hadn’t even played a couple of the games in the series… How can he seriously rank them then?? It showed me that these were just people with rooms full of stuff meant to be displayed. They were hardly gamers and more performers. It’s also why I hate the word collection, because it means you buy just to have. I refer to my games as a library, because I fill it only with games I play or will replay.

So I noticed ALOT of channels do these tier lists, ranking games, and playing games... except they release videos so fast, how are you playing all these games? Or at least playing them to the fullest? That's why when I started my MGS games playthrough, I wanted to stream every game so prove I'm actually playing them and just not watching videos and making up a video.

But one of the most important things is just to be happy, truly all this stuff doesn't mean anything. At the end of the day it's just stuff that can be replaced. We all have our reasons for why we do things or why we obtain certain things but it's very important that we understand why we do it. My reasons may be a bit different than most, but sorry if you ever felt envious or jealous man! Never wanted to make anyone feel like that. Especially friends! Glad you let go of some of the competive tendencies of collecting and are now just enjoying what you have and the games you really want to play! As I've gotten older, I've come to terms that I own too much stuff that I'll never do anything with. In my early 20s, I was really big into collecting anything and everything I could, if it was a decent price. Stuff I always wanted, and again if it was just a good deal. It came to be too much, then I had the "bright" idea to try and collect every Wii U game. This was pre-2020 when the prices weren't so crazy, and the Wii U physical library was small enough, so I figured why not? I even tried getting as much as I could digitally on the platform, checking the store weekly for deals. Then after the price jump during the pandemic, I stepped back to evaluate what I was doing. It took me until last year to realize I didn't need all of these games, I didn't need a complete Wii U collection. But I still wanted my collection, so I took it upon myself to start downsizing and selling off a lot of it. Now I do have a new goal in mind, but it feels much more obtainable. I want to own all the games that my siblings and I owned growing up. Some of them were lost, some they own, but those games are my childhood and I know I'll play them. That's the point of my collection, I want it to be games that I will actually put into the console and play. Yes, I'll definitely still buy some games I've always wanted to own, but that's only if I will actually play it. But I definitely have a much better mentality about selling off games I'm not enjoying, or don't need. Thanks for the video, definitely echoed a lot of things I was already thinking. Was nice to hear it from someone else too.

I didn’t think I’d be able to when the time came, but I decided recently that my library is big enough. If there was anything else I really wanted, I would’ve already bought it by this point. It’s liberating in a way to look at my retro collection and say “well, this is it, MY complete collection”. It’s more than I can thoroughly play in my lifetime, but not by much. I can see it changing at some point in the future, but only for my smallest libraries (Game Boy Color and Game Gear). But even with those two, there’s nothing I can think of right now. Most of what I would buy on Game Gear is already in my Master System library.

I have a large stockpile of credit at my local game store now and I've actually sold some stuff to afford NCAA Football Tickets to take my kids to their first football game. I'd much rather make a memory with them than look at a game I'll never play.

I think it's all about introspection and analyzing why you do the things you do. Introspection tends to come with maturity and wisdom, which is why younger people don't do it as much. I think for some people collecting games is actually their hobby, not playing games. They enjoy the hunt of tracking down a game they are looking for, and the thrill of finding a great deal in the wild. That hunting/collecting is the primary hobby for them. Sitting down and actually playing games is a distant second place. It's no different than collecting comic books, stamps, baseball cards, action figures, or whatever. It's a collecting hobby, not a gaming hobby for people like that. Many people don't realize this about themselves until they do some introspection, though. They think of themselves as gamers, but really they are collectors that happen to collect games (and they might play a game from time to time).

This is really good topic and video about the darker side of collecting retro games, or actually just about anything. I've looked for years now retro games from flea markets etc. inspired from KZitem videos, but mostly have bought only stuff that genuinely interest me. Granted, have some misfires too, but mostly have sold those already. Even before retro game stuff, I've collected modelcars from 2004, which I feel has already gotten out of hand. I've now pretty much stopped buying them, have sold some of them, but still feel I have too many of them. It may help to stop hoarding if you think of the massive job and trouble with packing, etc. all these collectibles would create if you'd have to move to another house. Risk for damage is also higher during moving. As for money, luckily games and collectibles aren't complete waste of money, as you get at least some of it back when selling, in some rare cases even more. Still, I don't think these are very good investments.

Similar to another comment, I was hard into collecting and building a giant retro collection from 2012-2018 or so. In 2011 I had my first after college job, and in 2012 I had paid down all of my student debt so I started exploring retro game collecting. When I first started I was just buying anything, really. The buying outpaced the playing, and somehow I ended up with a collection that didn't really match the type of games I liked to play - I would buy a game from a genre I hadn't tried much because it looked cool, and then buy a bunch more. When I played it, I realized I didn't like it that much, and I wouldn't have bought all the other similar games if I had played the game first. I was buying my collection games, but not myself games. I did fix that first, but then shortly after that I was faced with some incredibly expensive house problems, and other tough life events. In those years I got rid of basically everything. For money, and some out of just losing interest in all hobbies, just from being downtrodden. It was overall a good move, but I went a bit *too* far in the other direction. I do love games and retro games, so lately I've been getting back into them but I'm treating it more like a hobby than a task. I have way more than I can play still, sure, but it more represents stuff I'm interested in. And I decided to go with retro systems with everdrives/ODE's this time instead, so while I'm getting retro systems again I'm not dipping hard into games (I am getting a few licensed repros here and there) and I'm not trying to get all the holy grails I had before. I played Panzer Dragoon Saga and sold it to help fix my house. I enjoyed it, but I don't need to own it again, it's time to move on. As I mentioned I still have a ton of games on newer systems, but I mostly keep them put away in drawers. I display some stuff on a shelf that I think is cool, but not everything. I'm keeping cool stuff (show off a pretty box), library (Games I want to play, in a drawer), and hobby connected (enjoying spending time discovering/trying games, and getting/using the systems themselves), but also a bit separated now and I'm enjoying that a lot more than constantly checking stores/eBay to see what else I can add, like I did in the past.

I love this comment. It shows a lot of what I went through. I got a few videos talking about my past addiction life and how it really affected me. I bought so many cool looking games or games I remember being awesome from my childhood only to sit down, play it for 20 minutes, get disappointed and store it away. I sold so much filler and stuff over the past year or so, most the games I have now I really enjoy and want to play and it makes the game room so much better in my opinion.

@@IowaRetroGamerDad I'm glad you enjoy it more now, it's the same for me. Several years ago there was a similar video from another small KZitemr that really hit me on this (Aerodynamisch). They've unfortunately taken down their channel since, but they had a stressed out video sitting in their game room surrounded by tons of games and how much it was weighing them down, too. How it's just a bunch of plastic and cardboard boxes. They also didn't want to get rid of everything, they just wanted to start focusing more on the things they liked the most and they still had a passion for keeping some of their favorites around. The more stories and comments I see of this, the more I'm convinced we *all* go through this at some point haha. I'm sure someone will or has already appreciated you opening up about yours in your videos. For as many people that are into retro gaming / collecting now, I think it's still pretty common to not really know anyone in your personal life into it (at least mine is like this). It can be nice to find someone to relate to, even if they're strangers. Really awesome of you to offer people to DM you to talk it out too!

I'm 25 and am a collector. Have been collecting since the age of 13. But now I'm faced with getting my drivers license and getting a new car to have a side hustle in. So I'm selling my games to pay for the car. Right now I'm really feeling like I'm gonna regret it. But that's because my mom would sell my games at pawnshop when I was little up until she left in a messy divorce when I was 14. So I think what I'm feeling is a trauma response. I have my Odin pro to play retro games on. And a hacked 3ds for gba/ gb/ gbc/ ds games. I don't really need most of the games now. But my god is it hard to let go.

It is hard to let go. BUT you have a goal. You want a new car and to get your side hustle going. First sell the crap that means nothing to you. See how that makes you feel. When I sold all my fillers, I thought I was going to regret it but honestly I don't at all. It did look cool in the game room with full shelves but honestly, it just took up space for stuff I cared about. I sold a bunch of stuff and lately even sold some more so I could take my boys to a Hawkeye football game and we made some great memories. Just keep your priorities straight and only let go what you feel comfortable with right now.

Its funny how the more the price goes up the more people want to collect. Early 2000's I was buying games for 50 cents to a few dollars a pop just because they were cheap. Now even a common Pokemon gameboy title is going for $120 on Dkoldies. Over 15 million Pokemon yellow is out there. Way too expensive to build a collection so I no longer buy. I never listen to youtubers when it comes to money.

I was like this with books, CDs, DVDs, comics, toys and games. Eventually, I got rid of it all with a few exceptions. there is a mental weight that drops from your shoulders. I feel like I was collecting for the sake of collecting. back around 2016 my son who was 7 or 8 at the time asked me why I never opened my toys and played with them, mind you I was in my mid-30s. I honestly couldn't answer him. obviously, as a collector we know why we don't open "collectibles" but I wasn't gonna sit there and explain the intricacies of owning things. that inspired me to start getting rid of stuff, giving the toys to my son and ultimately curating the things I do enjoy.

I did a video on collection paralysis. Basically, I had no idea what to play anymore because I had so many games to choose from. I couldn't enjoy gaming because I felt like I had to force myself to rush a game just so I could play the next one. When I sold over 50% of my collection and really got down to the games I loved and had a connection with... it was so much easier to pick a game and actually enjoy it! It also helped me stop buying games constantly!!

Hi! What i saw as you talk is someone who is sad with many games and consoles that discovered the happiness is in another place. That s what happened to me for example. The next step is talk about this issues (as you are doing on this video) and the next thing after that is, you guess it: start letting go all the stuff that is not, in some way or another, important for you. That is my suggestion: only keep games and stuff that mean something for you. A great hug from Argentina.

I have a very rigid collection criteria that has to be satisfied in order to buy a game. 1. Only PS4, Ps5, Xbox 360 and Xbox one/ seres x titles. I have a hacked Wii U and a PC for Nintendo stuff and other retro systems. 2. Don't buy to resell unless it's a pricy item stumbled into. If you start buying to sell thinking you can fund your own hobby it gets out of control quick time and money wise, especially if you are not keeping tabs on money spent and gas wasted. 3. Get the good classics in bundles then be patient because you will find a deal on pricy games eventually. If you constantly buy bundles that have one game that you actually want you may get stuck with the unsold leftovers and that can get out of control. 4. If a loose, incomplete or scratched game is a great price get it when you see it especially if it's cheap. You can always have a game buffed and print a cover and it's worth it if you bought that $40 game for $3 or cheap in general. 5. Don't buy games as a speculation of value because you saw a KZitem video or heard some info somewhere. Collect what you genuinely want to play. 6. Try to buy in person only as online games can be misrepresented and you might be stuck with a overpriced damaged game. That it, these rules helped me collect a total of $400+ games for a pretty low price and the collection doesn't have any filler.

This is a great topic to cover! I am a hoarder and have always had hoarding problems but they have been getting better I think recently. I don't go overboard where I cant fit things in my room or that I cant clean my room. A lot of my collection I have just had from growing up over the years I always had a decent size game collection, but at one point I lost all my N64 games so I had to rebuild that and then add more. AVGN really influenced the games that I bought at first because I wanted to check them out myself, in a way I wanted a collection just like James Rolfe. On the other hand I have recently been selling my complete in box games or games that are sealed because I know I will never play them. I also buy retro games to cover them in reviews on my channel, but sometimes I feel like after a review I will just not need it anymore and sell it. I totally see what you mean and understand myself with the Dreamcast. Awesome video and subject dude.

Those are great points and I talk about them in a video in the works. The video is mainly talking about how your collection should really based more on progress than perfection. We don't need to buy buy buy to have a good collection and sometimes it becomes more tainted and toxic than good.

Eyy bro! Great video! I agree on all points, and I have done so for many years now. I started to slip into the very same problems too. It is a cool thing that has to be said about KZitem -- these creators are sharing cool games with their fans. Personally, I found that could have my cake and eat it too with flash-cart emulation. All the games I could ever want, while playing on original consoles. I still collect, but it has to be an absolute banger of a game for me to pick up. Another problem that I didn't mention is the fact that a lot of those larger KZitemrs (MetalJesus, John Hancock, Pat Contri, etc) got in on the ground floor when retro video games were near-worthless (2004-2015). By the time the retro boom got wild they already had massive collections with most of the great titles that skyrocketed in price. Nowadays, the hustle is different, but if you're a larger KZitemr or content creator you're way more likely to get the bro-discount & top finds from resellers, and/or free stuff from fans. Just another thing to keep in mind. And it's Retro "Show" like ahh... a TV show, haha! 😂

Hey, a lot of respect for making this video, I'll share my story with you if you like 🙂 I'm now in my early 30s and lost my 20s to buying cars, repairing cars, collecting cars. and the same with video games, buying games because they were cheap and having them stacked in boxes never to be played. I was still living with my parents and that came with its own frustrations. In 2019 due to a high amount of stress with a car repair I paid someone else to do and my job at the time, things suddenly went wrong, I lost a lot of money and the stress got to me - I found myself in A&E and then hospital for 9 days with my body shutting down. When I came out of hospital I made a few promises to myself and wanted to get things in perspective. I ended up selling 90% of my game collection and one of my cars to put towards a deposit to buy a house! It suddenly became very clear that I'd been spending and wasting money on things when what I actually needed was my own space to unwind and care for myself. This journey hasn't been without struggles, a house was bought in late 2019 and it transpired it needed a lot of repair work, then in 2020 the whole world shut down and building supplies and tradesmen were impossible to get and generally its been its own endless spiral. Now in 2023 I'm in a slightly strange spot, parts of the house are done, it was 100% the right decision and I feel so much better for having my own space, I've been slowly getting rid of legacy stuff/junk and downsizing my pile whilst also getting some new things. My only real regret is I sold some games which my gran bought me as a kid and she sadly passed away last year, in hindsight those games were worth more than their monetary value, so 100% it's right to discuss and think carefully about what means something to YOU. I'm now in a better place, my gran is at peace and no longer suffering (she had dementia), and I'm now in the process of converting my garage into a game room. I think there is definitely the argument of you don't need this, don't do it - and for some that would be the right answer, for me though I've paid off debts, I'm in a job that pays pretty good, and this has a positive return in the sense I can consolidate what I have and want to keep - my game consoles and some arcade machines, sort through stuff I know I no longer want and generally have a really nice, tidy environment to enjoy playing games with friends. This feels like something I've worked hard for and in a selfish way, 'deserve'. Thinking about mental health and what you need to unwind, have a calm space, enjoy time with friends and loved ones, it will be different for everyone, but this feels the right one for me.

Thanks for this amazing comment and sharing your story. The main thing with anything I guess is moderation. The mental load on stuff like this really takes it toll and causes us to lose focus on the stuff that really matters. Knowing how to repair and do that to cars is amazing tho! My perspective is quite a bit different than most here. I am an avid video game collector and have been since my childhood back in the late 70's/early 80's. Though I didn't consider myself a collector back then, I never did sell any of my childhood games or consoles. I still have them 45 years later. My collecting habit really took off when I discovered eBay back in 2006. What was once a collection of less than 100 games quickly eclipsed the 3K mark within a few years. I promised myself that I would stop at 10K but then I realized that there were games and consoles I wanted but had not acquired. I am so close to completing a few of the console libraries that I can't see stopping at this point. Obviously I sound like an addict but I do have limits. Bills come before games and my price limit for a single game must not exceed $150 no matter what the game is said to be worth. Does that let me off the hook when it comes to addiction.....probably not but I don't feel like my collecting is controlling every aspect of my life.

Every collection is unique. Mine goes by three rules. First, I wanted to own many consoles with a carefully curated selection of games on each, every game should be one I actually want to play. Two, never overpay, collect for what's cheap at the moment. And finally, limit the collection to the space you have. I have upgraded my space a couple of times, and now that I have a couple of full game rooms I feel I'm done. I have achieved what I wanted. This works out nicely with modern gaming trends. Newer games hold little appeal to me for a variety of reasons, so I don't feel the need to get more.

If you do genuinely enjoy retro gaming but feel things are getting out of hand or are unfulfilling, I would suggest rethinking how you collect. Everyone should use what they see other people collecting as inspiration or guidelines and not comparison of self. I find it best to create goals and restrictions before collecting. Perhaps focus on one system only that has value in you psyche. Put rules in place such as, only complete games or only a certain genre. This way, the final collection has value and not things without purpose or outlet. Every person is also not a museum style collector. Someone can also buy an Everdrive to play all the games and just look for complete or sealed copies of their most meaningful titles. Another route can be buying the same game multiple times as an investor. I personally enjoy the journey most of all. I love the research, organization, cleaning and modding sometimes more than playing. To play to my strengths I tend to collect 100 or something of the most investable/fun games of a system complete and then emulate the rest with modding. This allows me to learn as many systems as I can. One important note however is to pace. Collect for a time and then take the time to reflect before collecting again. I jump from video games to another hobby such as tcgs, comics or sports and then come back after some time. I hope this helps someone out. In conclusion I would suggest figuring out what style of collecting works best for your personality and wallet.

I sold most my collection that didn't matter to me and held onto the games that I felt connected with it. Not every person who wishes to collect has this approach, but for me, I have built a collection through the years, never trading, never being able to buy the games new, but when I found them second hand, I'd purchase them years later... my collection is almost entirely discounted, rarely new, I miss the boat on multiplayer popularity and "shiney new game" community experiences, but I have all the games I enjoy, not a single regret in my purchases because I only collect what interests me... it took years to build my collection, and I've lost some pieces along the way (needing money, flooding, etc..) but my core is more than enough to satisfy my gaming wants and needs, and never being a financial burden to obtain... if I come across rare gems (example: Afrika ps3 for $9,Godzilla ps4 for$23...)I buy them, and I enjoy the fact that some of my games have increased in monetary value, but it will all go to my children, giving them the opportunity to explore the history of videogames, getting to share my memories and create new ones with them... my collection is an investment in my future, but my priorities are a bit less money and more memory/legacy appreciation focused

That's a good way to do it. I feel like a lot of people lately are just building collections for views or the hype. That's why I try to bring some more awareness to this problem going behind the scenes. You should collect for fun and not other reasons.

I see a lot of the big time collectors able to say 'No' and restrain themselves if something is too pricey even if its something they have been looking for, for a long time. I wouldn't really call Hoarding an addiction, most people hoard because it gives them a sense of control, it is pretty much directly correlated with needing control. Addiction is from dopamine spikes, you have wired you brain through substance abuse to create new Neurons and path ways that constantly crave stimulation (dopamine). Being an addict; cross addiction is very easy to fall in to so if you are new to recovery you might find buying Video Games gives you a little dopamine spike and of course being addicts we will crave that a fall in the same trap. Many people in early recovery will become obsessed with the gym or gorge on chocolate and Sweets or become sex pests and hound their partner for sex all the time or even cheat. Sorry this was so long.

Don't apologize for the length. I love comments like these. As someone who is about to celebrate 11 years sober, I've seen what addiction can do to not only myself, but others. This is why I've really stepped back from game collecting and hunting for them because I became more fixated on finding games than playing them. Since this video has came out, I've slashed my collection in half and have went from barely playing games to enjoying them again. Btw.. I got hooked on the gym when I first sobered up. 😂

What gets me is when people buy games they have no intention to ever play, “yeah I’ll buy barbie on the Wii for £1 how could I turn it down for that price” why don’t people just collect what they like and will play? I find it really odd that’s when it’s edging on hoarding.

I have had a very different experience with game collecting. I started buying as many games as I could back in the '90s when I was in high school and got my first job, back before we even had internet access in my house. Toward the end of the decade, I started working at FuncoLand, and decided to try for a complete NES set. I could get most NES games for less than $5, so I'd just buy bags full of them. In my head, I figured it's hard not have $1.99 worth of fun with a games. I started getting close, with nearly 600 NES games, and realized that if I really wanted a complete set, I'd have to buy Sesame Street games, Barbie, Fischer Price games... stuff I never would really play. Completionist collecting began and ended there for me. At that point, I was able to break away from that mindset and just buy stuff I wanted to play. My NES and SNES collections have a bit of bloat from that era, but, at least for now, I've not sold anything. It serves me well sometimes to remember that completionist collecting isn't for me. I don't need full sets; I just buy what I like to play. My other console collections are far more curated as a result. I have half the number of Genesis games as SNES, but they're nearly all games that I really enjoy because I bought them because I wanted to play them instead of just to have them. More important than anything, though, are perspective and priorities. I have a wife and kids. I'm more likely spend my money on stuff for them to see them smile than to spend it on myself. I don't play games every day because working, helping around the house, and spending time with my kids are all more important. I haven't fallen out with games... they are far and away my favorite hobby. They just aren't the most important thing in my life.

Thanks for the awesome comment! From one father to another, you're doing a great job then. It'd be cool to see that many NES games and also at some point working at Funcoland! There was a few times when I was buying some games that I was like... Why am I buying this? It was racing and sports games that weren't worth jack and yes, I was never going to play them. Those were obviously the first to go and in fact had to throw away a bunch of sports games cause my retro store wouldn't even take them. I'm still purging but I love my little shelf I have right now that I can my permanent collection.

I got out of playing magic the gathering and had more time and money. I haven't been interested in games for the past 20 years, and the last console i played was the PS2. I still never call myself a gamer, just because I see the dedication and love that gamers have, and I think im just not as die hard as them. I will say, i respect the passion and the history of video games, and im glad that people have found happiness with gaming. Im just not interested in keeping up with new consoles. I only buy Snes, N64, PS1 and PS2 games. At this point I'm mostly done collecting and dont see a need to branch out to more consoles. Do what's best for you, never neglect your relationships and responsibilities, and you'll be fine. It's ok to take a break. I just started having kids, and they will always be my number 1 hobby. ANYBODY and literally EVERYBODY who wants to get a 'full set' paying $3,000 for Little Samson, $5,000+ for that shit Flinstones game, and $15-20,000 on an NWC, needs to spend less time game hunting and more time at the doctor's office figuring out where they are on the spectrum, and how they can be helped with those issues. Having a large library of games you want to play is fine, but once you pay over $100 for an old game you can emulate on your phone, even once, you've crossed a line from 'hobby' to 'illness.'

@@IowaRetroGamerDad Don't get me wrong, I've got 12 consoles and a PC connected to my big telly, and about 2,000 games physical, but most of them aren't 'rare' and I would struggle to get £5 for the vast majority of them, but it's not meant to be a collection, it's a library of good games worth having, that I picked up for cheap and wouldn't make any money off selling. But when you see someone hunting a version of Stadium Events that costs thousands with a different sticker, when the exact same game with a less rare sticker is less than $10 and they already own it, I honestly believe that's a personal issue they need help with like a gambling addict or alcoholic. I mean, people pay out the ass for that "resdient" evil game I think is on 3DS, just because it's mis-spelt that way on the spine of the cover.

Realized what I really need is a proper hobby and not to fill the void with stuff I couldnt play with as a kid. There's plenty of emulation and new age retro inspired games that honestly play even better than some of the classics. Gonna try and get back into art. Let the goblins and the kids enjoy this stuff! I think that KZitem has affected us on mental levels that it's hard to fully understand until you stop to really look at what's going on. As a Nebraska retro gamer mom who has been gaming for almost as long as she's been alive, I've seen huge change in the way we play and "collect" games. Sure, you'd know that one guy, or maybe the family in your neighborhood, that had a huge game collection. For most of us, though, it was never about how much we had, but what we had. Having ten really awesome games on was worth far more than an entire shelf of cartridges. Rarity almost always went along with quality, so it made sense when you might have to pay $125~$150 for that copy of Rondo of Blood on PC Engine CD or Radiant Silvergun on Saturn. There was little drive to have "complete" collection, because why would you? That would mean that you'd bought a bunch of junk too. Then, more and more, we'd see videos of people standing in front of these giant shelves of games, and suddenly that became a symbol of their legitimacy. If you've picking who to watch on KZitem, why would you watch the person who only has a small collection? They obviously know less about games than the person whose library is up in the thousands. (Even if, in reality, that's nonsense.) Legitimacy more and more came from what people owned, not what they actually knew, and that seems into our brains and makes us think we have to be the same way. Things started to shift from good games being valuable to ALL games being valuable, even if you'd never touch some of those games because of how bad they are. Instead of our understanding of what "normal" collections are coming from those around us in life, it started coming from us watching the outliers on KZitem, where of course the people with the biggest collections will often get the most attention. The way we think about gaming collection and game valuation has completely been skewed by KZitem, even when you KNOW that it's being skewed and try to fight against it. The fear of missing out is so incredibly strong. The reason we had game collections back in the day was because if we didn't have those cartridges on our shelves, we didn't have access to those games. Simple as that. And yet, we would still be fine selling off games we might want to play again, because we had the knowledge that we could always go back to a store later and pick up the game again for not a ton of money. The irony is that, here in 2023, we've NEVER had as much access to video games as we do now, and there is no game you couldn't get if you really wanted it with just a few minutes of looking online. Software emulation, Everdrives, MISTers, online subscription services, mini consoles, were drowning in options for playing those old games. And yet, the prices on the physical copies of those games have never been higher, and we STILL feel compelled to buy a bunch of pieces of plastic to put on our shelves. (I'm no exception, as I desperately try to relive some of my youth rebuilding my Genesis library.) It's incredibly hard not to watch KZitem and feel like you need to keep up with the other people you're seeing, and that's been such a toxic mentality that's crept into so many of our heads.

Love reading these huge comments like this. And yes, I think that was one of the ways I had to show my standing in the community was a giant, big wall of games behind to prove I'm a serious youtuber and collector. LOL. Its crazy to think now that doesn't really matter as much to me and I know its just about having fun and putting out content I like to create. I remember selling so many great games like you said but never really worrying about it too much because I could simply buy them back later.. and now with the age of technology fully underway, it doesn't take long to find those games on the digital platforms. Young Zak would crap his pants if he knew adult Zak had a small tiny pc that can hook up to a TV and has over 3,000+ games on it. LOL The toxic mentality is free and I feel alot of the retro community is free of it but it really comes down to your way of thinking and how you perceive stuff. I know right now I'm on a break from Facebook itself because it just brought me disappointment and rage. Thank you once again for this amazing comment.

I just found your video today and I think you’ve made some very insightful points! The video game space is a place full of strange desires and self-importance. The one that always gets me is beating a game on the hardest difficulty. No one else cares about this “accomplishment”. You don’t receive metals or become famous for beating a campaign on the hardest difficulty. You get bragging rights, that’s it. No one else cares. You beating a game on Hard means nothing to anyone else but yourself. I think streamers have created this idea that you’re a bad gamer otherwise. You don’t go to work and have everyone discussing what needs done that day and you say “Uh, guys? I beat a game on Insane” and they say “Oh! Well please, take the day off then!” 😄 I’ll play a game on Easy or Normal to experience the game, the story, and the universe the devs intended for me. Then if I feel the need to do it again, maybe I’ll add some challenge. But these people who think they’re somehow important or special because “they play games good” is so funny to me! It really means nothing but we’ve assigned importance to it as gamers.

Thee is most definitely a fine line between collecting and hoarding. I believe this effects collectors in general not just retro game collectors. The issues are very personalized some start because of nostalgia and wanting to reconnect with their childhood sometimes its healthy sometimes not. Its easy to go too far because in a sense we are our own rabbit holes and when we jump in we have no idea the psychology behind it and dont have the tools to get ourselves out. We just have to be vigilant and hold ourselves accountable. Ask yourself why you feel like you need/want an item and try to understand theres a fine line with wanting to reconnect with our childhoods in a healthy way and wanting to relive our childhoods which is not healthy or constructive i love collecting things but i really try to choose things that are important to me in some way.

Dude. I love this comment. It really is what I came to understand now. I have an addictive personality so when I was getting good feelings from grabbing games I could not have as a kid, it was powerful. But I soon found out alot of those game suck. lol. Feeling actually connected to my collection feels way better now and its much easier to pick stuff to play! I really enjoy being able to pop in some games from my youth or ones I rented alot.

Yeah from my perspective it almost always ties back to childhood like most psychological situations. Theyre often sad such as people with less then ideal childhoods not having things they wanted, or a specific franchise or character(s) being tied to memories of a loved one. The situations may often be personalized but the psychology is the same we all want to feel safe and the things we adore or collect represent the times or things that make us feel that way. The worlds scary and changes very fast it only makes sense that those unchanging memories and things that we associate with them make us feel happy. Id say dont stop collecting or revisiting those memories as long as you dont live in that past its always healthy to go back and observe just not obsess.
