I think the lip around there gives the illusion that it is beefier , but I do think it adds strength because it will act like an I beam. So I think it does reinforce that area without adding more weight. In the redesigned one it appears they were able to thicken the whole area because they reduced weight from the cheek part. It also could be about saving money on materials more than about weight, though.

I like your thinking about the I Beam. Makes sense. Im sure it didnt cost MORE in materials. Thanks!

@@LeeSideSailing an I beam is kinda like 3 rulers welded together.

Sorry if this sounds dumb in advance. I have a sunfish but it has a wooden tiller and extension. For next season I would love to upgrade to an aluminum tiller extension. Although my question is, can I attach an aluminum tiller extension to a wooden tiller? Thanks for the help, keep up the informative videos Lee!

Bot a dumb question at all! The answer is YES.. you will want to install a Universal Tiller Joint…. This will give you the most range of motion. I made a video on Upgrading Yoir Su nfish and recommend this. :).

99% of my experience has been with the metal rudder cheeks.I also prefer the pintle pin to push up from the bottom, not down from the top. If I were to make any changes, I would move the mast hole forward an inch, or 2, to reduce the excessive weather helm. Just my 2 cents from 50 yrs with the Sunfish. I love my Windsurfer & hang glider too!

Tha ks for the comment! In my experience, moving that damn pintle woth the split ring is a big pain in the butt…. So if it pushes from the top, i leave it be… but mine push up :). Metal cheeks are hard to find- keep them :)

The way those flanges in the casting work is how it's easy to bend a ruler on the flat side, but impossible to bend it the other way. It might make it more brittle, but it will also make it a lot more stable and stronger up to the point of failure. All things being equal with quality and material, the new one should be a lot stronger.

The reinforcing flanges are not creating the Illusion it is thicker; they actually add thickness at a critical stress point. Lets do a little experiment in our heads. Imagine a sheet of paper placed between two books as the distance between the books increases the paper slumps. Now imagine that you fold an inch of paper ninety degrees one inch from the two edges of the paper. Now that paper will not slump as the books move apart. Cheers!

I forgot to mention how much I enjoyed your presentation Lee. Do you know how much it cost to redesign the rudder cheek?

I dont know how much it cost…. My guess and it’s a total guess without any knowledge- is they got their in house people to redesign it, and my GUESS is that that didnt cost anything extra- However i am sure the retool and making the moulds had to cost something.

@@LeeSideSailing That's what I meant by the cost of re-designing; the cost of tooling and production. Another thing is if the rudder cheeks are too strong and don't fail at a certain point then the gudgeon bracket might fail or be ripped from the hull. It might be good if something can act as a failsafe to prevent catastrophic damage.

I don't race. But I launch and recover off a little beach into occasional waves and I think about what happens if the rudder isn't kicked up when in shallows and the waves bounce you into the bottom. Where I sail, that's mud, but if the bottom is harder, I think the cheeks could break from shear forces.

One thing you did not mention comparing the two plastic cheeks is the distance between the pin support is shorter on the SD one. In other words, the compression spring is more compressed. But it also means the cotter pin requires a different position hole. This means the original pintle pin will not work on the SD cheek.

The cheeks both work in standard gudgeon brackets…. :)
