This is a very good review! I had the same thing in that I found it really hard to get into this book at first. For me it felt like there was both a lot and nothing going on at the same time until Cora met Ampersand. There were also a lot of pop culture references that kinda dragged me out of the story a bit, like it felt more like how people online would talk/think vs people IRL back in 2007. An example was when she thought of her coworker as 'too Panic! At the Disco' to be trustworthy, and my brain just completely shut off from what was happening to think about what that even means. I am the right age to understand the reference, but I feel like that will age the book within another 5-10 years. I do like grimmer novels as well, so for me it was not that. I did like the story with Ampersand though I agree that you never really get to know Cora or others all that well.

I think Ellis got so heavy into the weird slang because she was thinking of this as a period piece, and period pieces tend to seriously over use time period markers. But the period was recent enough that it just feels like out of date slang. And thank you for watching!
