Natural bodybuilding has so much potential, but it’s far different than IFBB etc. When you bodybuild with disregard for health (leanness standards/PED’s) I think you miss the greatness it offers. God so happy to see even though this video is from a bit ago that hypertrophy focused lifters are starting to notice how important technique and failure is when progressive overload and not just weight, it’s almost impossible to explain to a old head or power copper that correlation of strength and size is not causation, and a mix of bro (tension/pump/burn) and good rep ranges are vastly superior

I really liked the phrasing of striking a balance between a traditional log booking approach with also maintaining movement quality, I think that some people that push the log book approach present it in a way that makes it sound as though you can gauge the quality of a training session based purely on the reps and sets written in the book without also examining more qualitative parts of training
@BasementBodybuilding
Жыл бұрын
Thanks Sam. The log book over simplifies it. It’s valuable when training quality is in check, since that is the pillar that gives value to the log book, but to think the log book is more valuable than the quality of the training is a mistake that defeats the purpose of it in the first place

the bit about "selfishness" at the end of the video hit me hard. One can't display an example by being stagnant and lazy. It also summed up a big reason why I enjoy lifting. For me, it is a controlled process of pushing the limits. It helps me not only in lifting but in my life. It taught me to constantly check my limits in actions that matter to me. The process of lifting taught me how to push myself beyond comfort, and, ultimately, that everything worthwhile in my life is earned through a great deal of struggle and practice. Ultimately, it all comes down to being more comfortable in uncomfortable situations which is the core of any progression, in my opinion. I don't care how I compare to other people on the internet. What matters the most is progression.

I agree that isolation is not accessory, but it certainly does assist the bigger lifts. The impact direct triceps work had on my overhead press when I started doing more isolation is huge. I actually stopped overhead pressing at one point for about 2 months, didn’t like how my shoulders looked doing just isolation, and went back to the OHP with 10 more lbs on the bar after having stalled initially. Triceps were a weak point, and getting them stronger allowed me to drive new pressing and shoulder progress. I take my isolation work very seriously now not just for hypertrophy but also for strength.

I'd make one counter point or better said, a dilemma. Now I have a theory that one can achieve the dream physique a bit earlier if in the first few years he concentates on building up the biggest muscle groups and later shifts the focus to the smaller ones. I take it as an investment. The reason behind it that with the more general mass you can raise your metabolism much more, which will make more effective the further gains. Especially for people with a broken metabolism (around 95 %of the gen pop) it is an important isssue. It follows the same logic as not focusing on being shredded, you make an investment to have more muscle built and later if your goal is a shredded physique at some point, you will be way more impressive. Anyway, thanks for this amazing chat and all the great content that both of you put out day by day.

The Training Enjoyment point was very interesting , i think that's why i prefer barbells ! so people can say "SFR is not optimal" or "Bio-mechanically it's not optimal" and i would get better gains via machines and cables with less fatigue .. but for me it's the same thing as (being strapped to a chair and getting the same gains) . i remember way back in time when i got in the Gym for 1 week and then quit for years it was because when i got there Coaches just had me do only machines and i hated it , so i never stuck to it and afterward go to do BS like "insanity Max30" and all that "BeachBody BS" , and actually what got me back into lifting was finding Barbell movements , (funny enough through ClowLean X) .. But ye i am not anti machines by any means , but if the corner stone in my program was mostly machines or i had to switch out Barbells / DB / Bodyweight movements for only Machines/Cables because "Better SFR" .. i won't be able to do it for so long ... and the biggest point here is also effort , the effort u put in a lift u care about and enjoy is was different from a lift that i boring or not enjoyable .. whether through the effort as in RPE and failure or even through tracking progress / prioritization and caring about the lift in general that u actually want to push through and not just going through the motion .

Cracked a laugh when you said after Squatting the rest of the workout is just not valuable anymore, the important one got worked. Since I developed over the years, especially in my approach, I can confidently say that my legs started to grow more from leg extensions and Uni leg presses being taken seriously instead of just glorifying the “main mover”. Programming “isolations” for a period of time before the squat pattern was the biggest help for me to treat every lift as a main mover. Thank you guys🙏🏻

Progression to me is weird maybe because i started the other way around , i always started out by "letting it happen" naturally within a certain Rep range while focusing on Technique & effort , how close i am to failure . but i ended up being kinda afraid of the weight so physiologically make myself go the failure with the same weight subconsciously even tho i can rep out the next weight . i figured that out one day i was stuck on Bench for weeks i was going for 5,5,5+ and when i hit 10 on the last set i go up and it's been weeks every week i get 7 or 8 and i can't get the 10th rep .. then i got frustrated and i just slapped 5kgs on the bar or even 10kgs ... and to my surprise i got 5,5,8 with the new weight even tho i was stuck on the previous weight . (with the same exact technique) .. yes one might say this is a rep range problem this rep range wasn't suited for u .. but this incident led to a pattern that i found in many lifts .. whenever i think there's no way I'll be able to jump in weight next session .. if i actually get passed my fear and do it i find myself able to get the weight up actually no problem . that's why nowadays i have been forcing progression ,, BUT using the same hypertrophy technique and rep speed and control to the best of my ability .. so basically forcing progression while standardizing the technique .

Its a program where you train twice a week inspired by the conjugate system with one intensity day and one volume day. You rotate the variations as often as possible for instance going from seated OHP to standing OHP. Is that a good bodybuilding program or is it geared more towards strength? If it isnt a good bodybuilding program is there a program which is similar in nature ie rotating lifts but more focused on hypertrophy?

Curious to hear what you guys think about things like TRT for someone with suboptimal levels? In reference to the PED talk around 1hr 10mins. Is it OK to bring T levels to, say, the upper end of “normal”? Assuming this is all doctor prescribed. I’m torn on the subject…granted I’m 27 and presumably have fine T levels, but as a 40 or 50 year old guy I could definitely see myself using it if my quality of life was noticeably decreased (and for longevity).

Great conversation. I was wondering/have a question; What is your opinion on cluster sets? Exanple: i use cluster sets for arms and calves. I do a set of 15 high incline dumbell curls 0 RIR. Then wait 15sec. Do it again. I get about 6. Then wait 20 sec, get about 5 (last rep had to rest couple extra seconds to get the 5th rep) then wait 25sec and do it again. Using the same wait the whole time. I call it the poor mans drop set. Works great in the home gym. Anyone else do this?

I've done clusters in the past. They work great imo. Especially if you are in a time crunch it's a brilliant way to get good quality work in a small timeline. As long as you account for technical failure and work as close to it or hopefully achieve it if possible. I might would caution against using very heavy weight for you on clusters, I did that and my arms got bad tendonitis

@@Madchris8828 thanks for the tip. i generally use lighter weights for smaller muscle groups anyway. yeah i'm doing it like this because 8 sets of bicep and triceps of high reps to failure is just time consuming and mentally draining. it takes too long, also not counting warm ups.

I do this for arms and abs and it works well. I thought it was called myo reps though?

@Dean Wright that just sounds like non-synergistic super sets to me. Still good and nothing wrong with that

1:10:00 Althought I totally agree that natural is the best way, do you not think that greats like ronnie coman, arnold or even bumstead think that they are earning their gains even with pds?
