ReWorks asked local artists to create works of photography to show the process of transformation. ReWorks hopes these images will help you reframe how you look at curbside recycling.
Artist - Ilenia Pezzaniti
Material - Paper
My mind was immediately thinking of everything I knew and didn't know about paper. I racked my brain for ways to depict transformation. As an admirer of paper, I was both excited and anxious about the challenge ahead.
I started to think of all the ways paper can be transformed and I quickly realized how certain methods of preservation and decomposition have similar effects to both paper and the human body, given they are both organic matter. So I utilized five distinct methods used on the human body and applied them to the paper. For preservation I froze and pickled the paper. For decomposition, I buried, sun-bleached, and burned paper. The final image is a quilted portrait of each method defined in an antique-like framing. One could argue it serves as a clinical mirror to the inevitable.
