I just got tattooed by jef a couple of months ago and hes such a down to earth guy, we talked so much black metal lore and writing/recording techniques cause I have my own project plus he signed all of the LPs I brought. Totally recommend setting up an appt with him.

Love the channel and the bands you cover. All of Wrest's work resonates with me personally, not just emotionally but in terms of composition and riffage. Wrest never seems to get the credit he diserves for just how animalistic, dissonant and melodic his material tends to be. Great video.

I'm pleasantly surprised a lot of people seem to be enjoying Leviathan. From what I've seen in the underground, I thought that it wasn't as well-respected as it was back in like 2006-ish.

Up there for sure. I think Grand Belial's Key will probably always be my favorite. There's actually quite a few US acts I like, such as Helleborus and Acheronian Dirge (R.I.P., unfortunately).

For me, one of the best musicians of all time, throughout Leviathan's entire discography you can hear a black metal that falls into clichés (without ceasing to be good at any time) but at the same time knows how to reinvent things from the genre, on a harmonic level many of Leviathan's riffs and structures are much more complex and broad than in most Black Metal, the melodic and dissonant moments create an atmosphere of hatred, despair and violence that I have rarely been able to feel in other bands. And on top of that this comes from a single person. Not to mention Lurker Of Chalice, which also reveals the versatility and successful incorporation of elements from other musical genres. At first it was difficult to listen to, but something caught me about the Speed Of Darkness EP, there was a mix of heaviness, atmosphere, melody and violence that led me to explore the rest of the discography, try listening to this project I highly recommend starting with the compilations Verrater, Speed Of Darkness, Demos Two Thousand and The Blind Wound

Leviathan despite any controversy of Jef is one of the best bm projects of all time. Dude has created some of the most hateful and despondent musick I've ever heard. Fantastic fantastic stuff. A lot harder than most Scandinavian shit imo.

I’ve tried for at least 15 years to get really into Leviathan, and it just doesn’t do it for me. I have a lot of respect for Whitehead, but I find most of his stuff to be pretty overhyped, everyone went nuts for that last album he did but it damn near put me to sleep. That being said, some of that early stuff is pretty killer, Tenth Sublevel and his stuff on the Crebain split is probably my favorite. Love that Lurker album as well, but that’s about it for me. Great video tho dood!

I was actually listening to the Crebain split the other day. I have no idea if Crebain is still going, but to be honest I enjoyed their side of the split almost as much as Leviathan's! I haven't listened to post-2008 Leviathan as much as like, say, Tentacles of Whorror, so I didn't cover it very much this time.

Great review man, yeah I love Leviathan , I first discovered him when “Tentacles of Whorror” came out and was hooked ever since , also my favorite album, I just wish Wrest can remastered his old demos/splits . Last 2 albums were kinda disappointing but I respect him no matter what. Are you a fan of his other band Lurker or Chalice? I stopped liking Nachtmystium after “Assassins” Oh god! Please don’t mention SunnO , I remember I took a chance and purchased an album (read a lot of positive reviews) and I was like “wtf is this?” Boring noise 🤦🏻♂️.lol Anyway hope Wrest continues Leviathan soon with a worthy album Take care

I don't really consider Judas Iscariot and Leviathan part of the cringe that emerged in the usbm scene although they were certainly on the fringes of it. Jef is ridiculously talented and some of Leviathan's material is out there and may not hit, however there is a wide variety of sounds explored and with how prolific he was during his demos and splits era, there's a lot of great material to sift through.

Lemme think... for this one it was "Courtship of the Discarded" for the demo era, "Another Sip of Fear" from the Sapthuran split, "F%#king Your Ghost in Chains of Ice" for the first album, and "Heir to the Noose of Ghoul" for the second full-length. Striborg - "Wrapped in a Cocoon Out of Harm's Way" was the intro, and Amon Goeth - "Confrontation" was the outro.
