You have to be kidding! I love the character of Rhoda, I even love Brenda, but the show was basically awful. It wasn't funny at all. The quirky characters were too quirky, really aggravating. One of my friends and I just watched a binge of Rhoda on a classic TV network and the first thing she said after we hit episode 6 was, no wonder Joe left Rhoda, who could stand being around her family constantly! And I had to Adian, and such an annoying family. I mean the whole show was filled with people who are completely insecure, and the way Valerie Harper delivered her lines sometimes seem like she didn't remember her lines. Which I have no doubt she knew her lines, it's just the way they had the character stammering and such. It was annoying.

Note: The actor who appears at the bank at the 16.00 mark was actor James Kiernan, his first and only TV acting job. He was the boyfriend of actress Barbara Colby, who played characters in Mary Tyler Moore, Odd Couple and landed the part of Phyllis's boss Julie on Phyllis. 3 episodes in she and Kiernan were shot to death by 2 thugs after leaving an acting class. Case was never solved, and robbery was not the motive. This was in 1975. A senseless double murder and cut short a great actress and who knows what Kiernan would have gone on to.
@honestone490
3 жыл бұрын
Just a minor correction. He was a personal friend and student in Barbara Colby's acting class but not her boyfriend. However, I agree his death on July 24,1975 was very tragic. If Barbara Colby hadn't been killed she might have opened many doors for him with future opportunities at MTM studios, on Broadway or with the CBS Network in general.
@TWS-pd5dc

@@honestone490 But weren't they living together? That's what I've read. Maybe they weren't boyfriend and girlfriend but I did read they shared an apartment. Which, of course doesn't mean he was her boyfriend. Might have been an assumption back then. IMDB refers to it this way: Barbara and her acting colleague/boyfriend, James Kiernan.
@honestone490

@@TWS-pd5dc Riddick Unsolved Mysteries online has an excellent posting on this crime topic. On July 24, 1975, At about 11:50pm, Barbara Colby and her actor companion James Kiernan were walking to their car parked at a nearby lot to the Venice CA acting school where she teaches. It was normal for Barbara and pals to congregate in the parking lot after class and talk. Barbara's friend actor Ron Rifkin would have been there too - but he stayed home sick that evening. An interesting fact that I didn't know. The blog is very informative about potential suspects and popular speculation after the shooting. Here's where the subject you touched on comes into play. Colby and Kiernan had been said by some to be dating at the time though the extent of their relationship was never reported on by the media, some have wondered if the motive for murder lies with one of their former partners who may have been jealous. However according to Wiki she wasn't divorced yet but separated from her husband who interesting enough was Ethel Merman's son. I still don't know if they were approached on foot and shot as some accounts say or if it was actually a drive by shooting. A possible gang initiation that went awry. Who knows? Maybe someday they'll solve this long overdue cold case.

"Rhoda" is relatively forgotten nowadays...then again, so is "Mary Tyler Moore" which is even more forgotten except by fans. I always liked "Rhoda" more - and I think it was because it was a much more real show, versus being a rather plastic newsroom-based show like Mary's show was. Valerie and Julie were absolutely virtuoso comedians (virtuosa comediennes?) with perfect comedic timing and they brought so much more to the pages of those scripts in their performances. They did have some great recurring and supporting characters - the only hitch in the show was Rhoda's marriage. I wouldn't call it a mistake, it had to happen, so Rhoda could go back to single life again, for which she was far more suited than a married woman. I wish Rhoda had had a proper wrap-up after 5 seasons though. That was disappointing. Over the holidays of 1978 they cancelled it with no warning; no final episode, and the last 4 episodes were never aired until the show hit re-runs. We'd have to wait 22 years until we finally found out what happened to Rhoda Morgenstern (the Y2K Mary-Rhoda TV movie.)

I watched several crime dramas during the 1970s, and I don't recall any of those detectives cussing, not even Kojak. The censors were pretty strict with shows during the 1960s and 1970s.
