At her yearly review, she was marked down for attendance because she'd taken those few days off. There's a KZitem channel "Oui in France". A woman moved from the U.S. to France. I was somewhat surprised when she said that in France (as in the UK, Australia, etc.) taking a three week holiday wasn't a sackable offence. In the 50s, there was an optimism that any problem could be fixed and was being fixed. Up to the 70s, the was a basic belief in progress and improvement. Today nobody believes anything and nobody thinks anything is getting better. All we want is more toys than other people and not to have to think about the mess we're leaving the future. We know the party's coming to an end but want to go harder and faster, long after it's stopped being fun, until it crashes.

Comedy often turns the commonplace upside down for comic effect. Looking at any situation from a new angle is a great way to spot something that you couldn’t see before. Comedians also have an advantage over politicians or scientists or philosophers because they are free to say anything they like.
@majordendrocopos

I think only two likes to your comment proves that as a society we have definately lost our way. Productive work is a necessity to drive society and those who produce work that helps others achieve their idea of happiness is the best work. Very few ever find it however, and I believe that the rapid pace of our lives due to the worship of technology for its own sakes has erased even the remembrance of the existence of such a concept. We are all cogs in a giant, and for the most part, unseen corporate wheel that continues to present us with increasingly smaller carrots to chase. Eventually we will cease to chase them and when we do the results will not be pretty.

It is remarkable how Jamestown in Virginia has disappered down the American memory hole. The Jamestown settlement 1607 in the Colony of Virginia was the first permanent English settlement in the Americas. Also forgotten is that between 1718 and 1775 over 52,000 convicts were transported from the British Isles to America, mainly to Maryland and Virginia, to become indentured servants for the highest bidder. But walk around downtown Hampton Virginia or the hillbilly mountains if you want to see the remanant of the genes of the poor, criminal classes of Britain. The Mayflower story is much more appealing, apparently.
