Love to hear Rick Danko taking the stage with a melody of his sweet voice to welcome the audience❤

Hey! That's my recording. I can only remember making a copy for one dude a long time ago who bugged me for it and here it is all these years later. For all those who commented 'this is hard to watch' I hear you and that's why I didn't post it myself or otherwise distribute it. Except for that one guy... Anyway, this was recorded at the Cubby Bear North in Lincolnshire IL. Rick was not in good shape and I was really taken aback to see him come out on a cane and struggle to take the two steps up to the stage. Obviously sat down the whole night. He still seemed like he wanted to put on good show though. He didn't normally have that band with him and you can see him directing them. I shot this from the balcony off my lap and, as you can see when I take a wide shot to get Prof Louie, between the slats of the railing around the balcony. I think this is the first time I used this technique and that's the cause of the shaking in the beginning, and whenever actually. Also, I have the lcd on the cam covered with a piece of paper to kill the light so I'm nearly shooting blind when it's down on my lap. That's why the drift at times when I cut his head off. I perfected this method to some degree over time and have 80 some videos of live performances over on my channel @zoothorn99. Dylan, Neil Young, and a bunch of others. It was a depressingly small crowd at this show. It was mid-week in a far north suburb of Chicago. I doubt it was 100 people. As you can see when a few people danced the whole main floor was open. There was a row of bar tables around the edge of the room that had some people and up where I was in the balcony had some but not full by any means. I try not to live with regrets in life but one that sticks with me is from that night. You can hear Rick at the end say he needs 15 minutes and he'll come out and sign. I stuck around for about 5 and there was just a few people who had stayed. I mean like 2 or 3. It seemed too depressing and you could see he wasn't feeling well. I left. To have him pass less than a week later...well, let's just say I sure wish I would have stayed and talked with him. I'm glad to see people enjoyed the performance.

Thank you so much for being there that night and recording this for posterity! This brought tears to my eyes. My Band back in the 1970's and 1980's played so much of the Band. This version of "The Weight" is just beautiful a week before his passing. I absolutely loved Rick Danko. May he dwell in light in the Worlds beyond this one.

I grew up in the Bands stomp’n ground from their childhoods and then, later, running the roads from Windsor to Montreal! With Hawkins. So being an armature musician, I got to meet all the members of the Band but struck up a friendship with Danko. The last time I saw him was just days before this show and I had spent about an hour with him on his tour bus on a “no show” day. I was very scared by what I saw. His weight, he sweated continually and still drank heavily and I think there was even some continued drug use.. I was shattered by the news of his passing - not surprised, but still shattered. I will always love him like a brother. Peace

@@cherrypickerguitars As a longtime keyboardist, Honey Boy is my hero. Saw The Band in Chicago in 96, and sat about 10 yards away from Garth. What a night.
