I used to play Rifts back when it first came out. Previously I had only ever played D&D but I was super hooked by the concept. Some of the best RPG memories I have took place in Rifts. Our GM also introduced our group to Call of Cthulu. Rifts games were always played during the day and Cthulu at night. There are times when I miss that time in my life so badly that I can taste it so, I just might have to have a look at Savage Rifts. Thanks so much for this information.! I cannot tell you how much it has meant to me.

I recently just got back into the Original Palladium Rifts, and am having a blast with it. I got out of RPG-ing for quite a long time, I left the Rifts system about World Book 5:Triax and the NGR, so that was some time ago. I went to Gencon 2017 with some friends, and ended up meeting Kevin Siembeida who showed me how much they've done since then with Robotech. Well after buying all the new Robotech books I started rereading my Rifts books, and some friends at work noticed. Since then the Palladium system has been a blast and enjoying it very much. Haven't had time to try out Savage Worlds of any type, will have to give it a shot.

The subject was covered well. I'm still dice slinging to Rifts and with this new concepts from Savage Worlds on the game does bring back the joy. I know it's good to bring new blood into the ranks and sometimes I struggle with keeping Palladium and Savage Worlds rules from interfering in my enjoying a session. It's a fresh breath of air versus dealing with the usual rpg zealots who refuse to anything a try.

I agree, and thanks for the positive feedback. I used to play old Rifts a lot, but hadn't in a while because the rules have become stagnant while other companies keep moving forward and evolving their rules systems. Putting the Rifts world, which I still love, in the Savage Worlds rules system revitalized it enough for me to game master a new long term campaign that I started shortly after its release.

Mega Damage is a smaller complaint for us overall but it does demand intelligent character building. A pistol can easily become MD capable using the Smite spell but you still won't be able to effectively damage a Robot Armor with it. You have to go out and find a bigger gun. To us this makes sense. Main issues include: Although power spread was part of Rifts between classes, the Mind Melter is flat out too weak compared to other Iconic Frameworks (classes). All players know it, the developer knows it and we all wait to see official changes. Glitterboy Pilate should not have been an IF. You get almost literally nothing to build your actual character and all your power comes from the power armor. You could build a M.A.R.S template that gets a PA (there is a way to get a Glitterboy too) that is much more capable as a trained person.. We simply ignore GB Pilot as an IF and tell any player to build a MARS tempate (a very viable custom build method). It was really a dumb idea by the designers who likely felt forced into making GB an iconic template. Tomorrow Legion as a faction is basically just a starter zone for noobs like in a video game. Experienced Rifts players will likely ignore it. Our group started the beginning campaign anyway but split from the faction the very first adventure. You'd have to be a Paladin mentality to stick around with the Tomorrow Legion as loot and finances are handled like you're part of a cult with rewards not enough to charge an energy clip. The Tomorrow Legion is sadly a reflection of the designers D&D style approach to the conversion. Rifts has always been on another scale than that. Our group (re-envisioned from old Rifts characters) quickly adopted a pirate code which is likely extremely common on Rifts Earth outside of major factions and the Tomorrow Legion quickly became an unrealistic option. Also there is currently no powerful magic options like long distance teleportation and Rift summoning (perhaps details later if Shifter is detailed in next wave of books). My suggestion is to use the new Savage Rifts rules but gain access to all the old books (free online pdfs available these days) and read the lore from the old game. They were nicely bloated with lore to begin with and old rules easily ignored. Get a feel of the new conversion methods and pull in content frequently. Even after Savage Worlds makes more books (second wave expected this year sometime) it will always be rules heavy/lore light. It is expected that the GM and players eventually come to know more about the Rifts world from the original books than what the conversion will ultimately convert.

Having had some small experience with Savage Worlds at a couple of conventions, I was very open to the system itself and its possibilities. I had been stuck looking over my old books for years, as none of my current players cared for the clunky system (well, neither had I, but I loved the world), so I was already thinking of what system might work for it when I heard about the kickstarter for Savage Rifts. Now I have several books in electronic format, and the main ones in paperback, and am having a blast creating a new story for players old and new. With the recent return to the area of some of my old buddies who played in our early RIFTs games, I have a full party ready to explore California and its environs as defenders and protectors of all peaceful sentients.

I like the balance idea you talking about in the video. I hope they balance everything better now. MDC was a main thing and in the old setting it was depending on the world you were on. Rifts had a lot of magic so MDC armor to fight MDC creatures was a thing. Now if world was without magic, chances are it would be SDC and the tech level would be Sdc as well. They change it world by world which is nice. I just didn't know how RIfts would cross over into savage worlds, considering im not familiar with it.

I have heard the complaint many times that Palladium/Rifts hasn't updated, and honestly I think the big issue is they simply can't update like so man systems have. To update to a 2nd ed or 2.0 system would nullify hundreds of books and years of collected work. If they could manage some sort of official conversion, that would be great, but hard to see that happening. I do hope this has methods of converting any of the palladium materials into this system. If not, then sadly I don't think it has all that much value to me as a replacement for the system itself.
@TheBoardGameKaptain

It doesn't really have a conversion guide, though it does convert many major races, weapons, and vehicles. I think Palladium could have at least done a 1.5 edition at some point that didn't invalidate the many released books they have but at least cleaned up the rules. At least they let Pinnacle come out with this, which does feel like a completely new edition, a 2.0 if you will. ;)

@@mattmcdonald7112 Jordan Weisman has long stated that those rules were to enable people to play the game on a kitchen table -- he wasn't looking for realism and BattleTech was not an RPG when it first came out. BattleTech (2e) rules are some of the cleanest and easiest to play rules of any tabletop combat game. Quicker and easier than WarHammer 40K, cleaner than (if not as 'realistic' as) Heavy Gear. Personally, I've been playing BattleTech for 35 years with my group, and while we have played with the Total Warfare rules a couple of times, we always go back to our beat up (but memorized) BattleTech Compendium with the MadCat and elemental on the cover.

I've got a couple dozen sessions with my modded Mega Damage and M.D.C. system. It works better in my opinion. M.D.C. grants a free soak roll+1 against non Mega Damage attacks. With mega damage cancelling it out. This provides a middle ground for the system. By taking the heavy rules out of mega damage and M.D.C. you can add them in again for more appropriate things. Like power armor will have M.D.C. but a spider walker will have Heavy M.D.C. And heavy damage does gritty damage to non heavy armor. Mega damage or otherwise. In the rare case where there is heavy damage but no mega damage, the m.d.c. armor still gets a soak roll but if still wounded they take gritty damage. And against heavy M.D.C. the armor gives a free soak roll (no bonus). Adding in heavy to mega damage weapons is pretty easy and obvious. So much so that the players also pretty much agree where it applies. The main reason for this is the exploding dice. Too many times multi d6 weapons end up exploding into like high 30s and 40s. And it's usually the high ROF weapons. There needs to be a divide between them and the real anti-tank type weapons. Also it becomes too easy to gain access to this kind of mega damage in the game. By redefining mega damage and moving the goal of heavy up to higher more appropriate weapons it keeps the feel of rifts without sacrificing big baddies.

The ability to carry a rifle with power once reserved for tanks and wear armor that can withstand punishment in kind, and yet still feel small and vulnerable in the wilderness is a huge appeal of rifts to me. If it doesn't have that 50's sci Fi, "alien laser pistol that disintegrates 20th century tank" quality I have to ask, is it really even mega damage? At that point, is it not just a generic "heavy" damage/armor quality? Like if you reserve it for heavy vehicles then it's no longer the mega damage idea presented in and largely unique to rifts, it's just a way to set aside tanks and such that would make just as much sense and work just as well in any other setting or system.

neo bear I have always kinda disliked the MDC system even though I fully understand what they were attempting to do, it becomes too much about needing fire power and loses finesse, I was thinking a good way to do it would kinda like west end star wars , with personal,fighter,& capital scale. Where personal had a chance of hurting fighter and fighter had a chance of hurting capital but capital could devastate fighter and fighter could devastate personal. But all types were used in game.

It's not perfect, but I still find it an improvement. I felt like I had been waiting 25+ years for Kevin to do a proper new edition to his system, and just when I gave up, he announced that he was letting Pinnacle do it. I was truly shocked. I couldn't believe that he would ever let anyone do a different rules set for Rifts, let alone a separate company. So I was definitely thrilled. The rules aren't perfect, but since I won't play Palladium's rules anymore at this point, I am definitely happy to have a easier to teach, and far less bloated system to play Rifts with. There are a lot of little things that didn't translate well into the Savage Worlds rules set, and tons of options that didn't make it into the new books, but I do feel that the overall feel was still well represented. The tomorrow legion just felt like another generic do-gooder faction, in a setting with plenty of those to already choose from, but it was fine. I still love the multiverse and its endless possibilities, and if I play in it now, it's definitely with this system, until there's a better option. ;)

Shame that they still have the mega damage problem the original Palladium game has. It is just too unbalancing to play other races and classes when somebody can just walk out with a Glitter Boy and lay waste to everything while bullets bounce off. It is like a DnD game where all the characters start off as humans, elves, and dwarves, and that one player wants to start out as an adult Red Dragon. You have an arms race where as a GM you have to give the bad guys big guns to deal with that one player which puts everyone else in harms way. They should of changed the rules as you said or simply make Glitterboys and similar classes a NPC class reserved for big bad bosses.
