Regardless of your intentions, you are praising one show at the expense of another. You are also drawing the RoP bashers (some of them disingenuous) by using this format. Why not do separate reviews based on each show's merits. Both shows are flawed, yet only one is getting hyperscrutinized. Why? HoD is okay, in my opinion, but the marketing and reviews are misleading. It's only based on Fire & Blood in the sense that the original novella is included in the book. There's nothing epic here. No Fall of Valyria, no greater scope of the dynasty. Just the Blacks and the Greens from "The Princess and the Queen" and backbiting soap opera. Is Crabfeeder even a character? No, just a plot point. The entire show is being overpraised and the flaws glided over. RoP meanwhile, is the more ambitious show. Yes, it's inept and even amateurish at times, but nowhere near as bad as the bashers make it out. Comparing the contents of a novella to an epic fantasy story is not a good fit. There are different scopes and techniques involved. Your review flattens all that. If you want to continue to cash in on the bashing train, by all means continue. But if you want to maintain credibility, do some substantive reviews on each show.

@@thomasc9036 Maybe, but it produces a shallow analysis in my opinion. It doesn't go into depth on either one. Another channel, Raf Blutaxt, has discussed the topic of what's wrong with Booktube these days, and this type of media "review" is a symptom. Channels that should stick to books are branching out into amateur, sometimes unskilled, coverage of TV and movies. I don't necessarily love RoP, but the hypercriticism of it, while giving HoD a pass and overpraising it, is giving me tinnitus. Reminds me of an older show called The Killing, which was a fairly mediocre crime drama set in Seattle. If you believe the internet's reaction, though, it was going to be responsible for the fall of civilization. They ranted and overstated their case so much that it was obvious they weren't entirely sincere. Maybe some were... I see some of that bandwagoning here in the sometimes ludicrous herd condemnation of RoP. The solution is simple: if the show truly wounds you (general "you") that much, if you see Tolkien as a holy text (it's not), don't watch the frickin' show.

Galadriel is such a terrible idea for the main protagonist as well. They want to take her on this transformative journey where she’s hot headed and learns to become more humble. There’s a main problem with this. She’s immortal. She’s thousands of years old. She’s already had to be diplomatic. She’s already had to fight and convince others. Yet when we see her, she’s the exact opposite of what a multi thousand year old ethereal being should be. She acts like my teen who doesn’t get her way and acts like an ass to everyone around her. One of I'd think the most important notes I've taken from my creative writing class is to never ever attempt to write a foreign race like elves cause they are very old and are way harder to be done right especially if you're not a seasoned writer... this is why.
@auroradlg154
2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. There is a reason why old, ethereal beings are rarely protagonists: they have little room to grow because they are usually already mature and wise. You could make them young and reckless, but it comes at the expense of their wise and ethereal aura, which thrives in mystery (that is: not knowing every detail of how they became to be so wise). You could also make them wise and ethereal from the start, but that only works if you opt for a more plot-driven narrative instead of a character-driven one. That's one core issue of ROP for me, because LOTR was a lot more plot driven and being character-driven already feels too different in essence. Lately most shows are character driven and writers want to give the audience that juicy character development that comes with it, but it doesn't work for every character. Not every character can or should be relatable and have a growth journey. Wise, ancient magical beings fall exactly there. I wish they had given Galadriel a similar role to the one Gandalf had in the trilogy: a major character who plays a very important role, but in the end is more of a guide and almost a parental figure to the rest. One who does grow during the plot, but was already massively powerful and wise at the beginning of the story. It would've even been more innovative, as we don't have many wise women with enough screen time in most media.

It's not too complicated, if you think about it. HOTD has as main producers/showrunners, Miguel Shapochnik & Greg Yaitanes. The first worked on GOT, directing many episodes like ''Battle of the Bastards'' and the second is a veteran director/producer who worked on shows like House M.D., Prison Break, Heroes and the underrated Banshee. Also, GRRM, the guy who created this IP is again involved as producer, like he was in the first excellent GOT seasons, before D&D then booted him out. ( With great results. /s) Plus, HBO has a long ''tradition'' of producing this type of high quality, mature series. ROP, on the other hand, has 2 showrunners with next to zero experience and less then 10 credits on IMDB. BUT, the 2 are proteges of Abrams/ Kurztman. The first is infamous for his crappy ''mystery box''-style writing and the second proclaimed once speaking about his Star Trek shows, I quote: "I don't care about telling a story that fits in the Start Trek universe. I see the Star Trek universe as a platform to use in order to spread a message...." And we see both of this in ROP. ''Mystery box''-BS writing ( the sign carved on Galadriel's brother dead body, the literal box that the Dwarven king shows Durin...) and clumsy & cringeworthy political allegories (the Numenoreans complaining that the Elves are taking their jerbs, Ar-Pharazon being a not so subtle Trump allegory, the white Orks, putting the black Elf in chains....). And don't get me started with the arrogant attitude of the writers! "We gonna modernize Tolkien for a broader audience.." and "We're gonna write the story that Tolkien never did, but should have written...." You can spend all the money in the world, if you hire hacks with no talent but plenty of arrogance, don't expect any great results.

Forbes, which initially gave ROP an unrealistically positive review has followed up its "Galadriel Problem" article with one even closer to your video with the title, "The Rings Of Power Has Inexplicably Terrible Writing". The reviewer continues: while "awed and impressed by the opening two episodes just like many others" by the fourth episode it was evident that "The Rings Of Power is written so poorly it defies even my worst fears." I know there was a dust-up about race, but Cynthia Addai-Robinson as Queen Regent Míriel and Sophia Nomvete as Princess Disa both give performances which are far better than the writing; Addai-Robinson in particular is very convincing as a regal and wise Numenorean royal. However, "They took our jobs" in the 4th episode was the worst writing of the entire series. It was ridiculous. When I mentioned it to somehow who had only watched the original movies, knows nothing else about LOTR, and hasn't watched ROP she asked with total bewilderment: "You mean like Legolas? Why in the world would someone like Legolas want to take away a human's job?" She concluded by asking; "Are these writers clueless?" Yes, clueless. ROP is visually spectacular, but the writing it terrible.

I mean, something that should make me feel... things. I have only read LOTR but man, that sounds like a pretty amazing thing to see for the most casual LOTR fans... I felt nothing. Today I watched Rhaenyra EFFING FINALLY marry Damon after having set them up for weeks, and after 58 minutes of an episode that felt 3 hours long by the sheer amount of stuff that happened. 15 people crammed in a hall actually talking to each other and I was at the edge of my seat the whole time. There is a huge and irritating hole in the logic of Galadriel's motivations at Númenor. Consider this (1) The elves were blithely building a fancy smithing tower at Lindon; (2) The dwarves were happily digging for ore at Khazad-dûm, save for a no-victim rockfall; (3) Númenorians were going on with their boring lives (worrying about MAGA politics); and (4) Galadriel originally just want to boat-ride out of town. Nobody knew where the hell Sauron was. Galadriel was a lone elf who was stuck incommunicado on an island. Only the Southlanders (and a few elves) knew the Orcs were digging a big-assed tunnel; there were no hordes of Sauron swarming upon the land ala Genghis Khan and the Mongols on the Steppes. Yet..YET, Galadriel bitched about forming an army and the Númenorians finally obliged. Why? Did the NSA send them satellite pictures of border concentrations of war machines? Was there intel on Sauron's generals stockpiling their blood banks? Nope. All Galadriel has read was some old parchment from some ancient archives. She did not know the "now" at the Southlands. Like you said, very poor writing.
@caindarin9665

Poor writing, yes, but Halbrand told her of his lands being decimated by orcs. How this could stir the Numenoreans to follow an elf to battle in lands unrelated to their lives is a mystery--or simply what the writers needed to happen. Blah.
@IshtarNike
2 жыл бұрын
Yes. It only makes sense from the point of view of the audience who know all of the storylines. From the point of view of the characters it's ridiculous. Even more so that the Numenoreans make it to that one village in the nick of time. One could argue that the orcs are wider spread than we've seen in the show. But if so it's still piss poor writing. In the space of one film, Two Towers, we get a better sense of spreading the spreading orc menace than we have over 6 feature length episodes of this show. There's no excuse for it. As far as we know there's only one or menace in the south lands and it's been extremely well hidden up until a very short time ago. Halbrand better be Sauron or this is massive plot hole.
@lexdeobesean

Aside from all the other issues, rings' biggest issue is the flimsy 'inciting incident' like you alluded to. All we get is a childhood scene with awkward dialog and setting up a vengeful theme, and then a hasty montage about where Galadriel's obsession comes from. That's it. We don't even see her brother's motivation or death and her hearing about it. They should have spent one whole episode fleshing out her love for her brother, Sauron's evil (we all know he gets beat in LOTR, you have to re-establish him), her brother's call to action, his death etc... that way we get to empathise more with her obsession.

Great review and I agree with all of them. Perhaps the most straightforward issue for me is it simply doesn't know what it wants to be. I originally thought this writing is awful, but I could see kids not minding...then I thought about some of the scenes would be too scary for kids. So it's like an adult show w/ kid writing. That's why it's hard to sit through because it feels at times they are making scenes for kids that serve no purpose other than to be "cute" but it just makes the show super boring. I can't count how many times I've lost what was going on (I stopped caring) because there was a scene that did absolutely nothing. I also have to say, I suspect the editing is awful too. We jump around too much for no reason. Almost like they are saying "now let's check in on X" Whereas House of the Dragon (early seasons of Game of Thrones) almost used not checking in a house as a way to build tension because you knew something was building you just haven't seen it yet.

There was a scene with the two elves in episode 2 or 3 where they visit the dwarves. I perticularly liked their verbal exchange, though it did feel like philosophical phrases more than dialogue, but they were still decent phrases nontheless. And then they're like ok let's go to the dwarves, the two of them, and poof, they're at their front door, the two of them, like they strolled down an alley. What? Are you not gonna show me the world they're traversing? A tiny journey at least? No guards? Or at least soms diplomats with them or whatever, seriously? Just the two of them? It felt weird and I was let down because that was the first time I started paying attention to the screen. GoT had soo much traversal, literally half the show is people travelling different regions, it made the world feel huge and populated.

The thing I keep thinking about in connection to "Rings of Power" is a BBC production over a decade ago called "Merlin". That show took several liberties with Arthurian legend. It had Arthur growing up and acknowledged already as Uther Pendragon's son and heir. It also posited that Uther hated magic and would burn anyone suspected of having any magical talent. There were many more variations and inventions that strayed from the original stuff. And while I'm an Arthur nut (know way too much about the sources etc and the very tenuous history), which made me chafe at this, my family loved it. I ended up watching it but thinking of it as almost an alternative universe version, which may even be what was originally intended. There are moments in "Rings of Power" which are nice, or even good. But I don't know if it's enough to make me want to watch any episode again. I don't really like any of the characters, and even if I can follow some of the ideas, I have way too much trouble connecting these characters to Tolkien.

Rings of Power is an adaptation of a book (The Silmarillion) that Amazon do not have the rights to. I would speculate it is impossible to make a loreful adaptation in this scenario. That this decision was ever made is astonishing when considering the sums of money involved. As an example, I don't believe Galadriel's time with Melian is mentioned in the appendix, but it is in The Silmarillion, so it's off the table. Similarly, the prolog skips The Silmarils, and therefore Faenor and the kinslaying. This would be a chunk of Galadriel's backstory and motivation, but it's left out apart from the odd reference later on. The first episode really needed proper building of relationships to make us care about Finrod (was he even named?) and by extension Galadriel's mission. If that's the starting point, getting a good product out of the other end would be something of a miracle. The writers are left between a rock and a hard place, but that's Amazons fault.

That begs the question: why on earth did Bezos spend 250 million $ to buy the appendices instead of spending less money on another fantasy IP which they could adapt properly, without being hindered by this complicated legal rights situation? I don't think Galadriel's motivation is hard to grasp. Everyone thinks that they haven't seen any traces of Evil (tm) for a few decades, so it's probably alright to turn to other things, while Galadriel wants to get to the bottom of what happened to her brother and thinks that there still is something afoot. So she lets her personal vendetta overrule her actual orders and because she also has horrible social skills, she alienates everybody around her and gets send home. I agree that all of her scenes in episode 1 are extremely clunkily written - especially the bit in the cave. That aside, while RoP does have it flaws, I think it's largely a question of taste too. If you aren't into political intrigue, violence and horrible people doing horrible things to each other, the whole GoT world might not be your cup of tea either.

Great stuff (as usual), but may I make a VERY humble suggestion. I do not know what sort of camera you are using but if it is something that lets you adjust settings might I suggest you set it to manual focus. The reason I mention this is every few seconds the camera seems to "hunt" focus. It is particularly noticeable in the reflections of the LED strips on the glass of the computer screen and glass of the HG Wells poster. The lights (and image) seem to "throb" when the camera refocuses and it distracts from what you are saying, at least for me. I hope you don't mind my mentioning this, it really is meant constructively. I am enjoying Dragons somewhat more than Rings but appear to be in the minority in that regard amongst my social circle. In my opinion, neither show is well written, they both just serve to make me miss "The Expanse" more. It's so disappointing as, like many others I imagine, I really wanted to like this series. I'd even settle for mildly entertaining, but alas. Why? Why is it so difficult, considering they have a budget in the hundred's of millions, to put some effort into finding decent writers for a show of this nature? One can only speculate, but it must be that, somehow, it doesn't matter to them, it's not important enough. Better to spend it all on the look rather than the substance. Perhaps it's simply a reflection of the times. JRR Tolkien for the Instagram / TikTok age.

The amount of scenes in RoP where a nameless extra enters and delivers a single line to move the plot is infuriating. So many long monologues. You can also compare the character network between the show and see how the ones in RoP are very bare and narrow. After two years of being announced, RoP show runners and writers seem to have done very little. Galadriel is a hot headed immortal whose rudeness is framed as an act of girl boss; her actions have little to no consequences and we just need to agree that she is so cool. She doesn't even hesitate to kill. Rhaenyra, on the other hand, are being constantly reminded of the result of her actions. When she makes a risky choice, the whole family berates judges her, hard. Thus, she tries to be very level headed when making certain decisions as a queen, especially when it comes to war.

The first 5 episodes / first half of Season 1 was intended this way, as a prologue, and closely stuck to the book/source material, which, progressed at the same rate. But thankfully, the prologue is out of the way now, and the show will settle down in terms of progression. I don't blame people for reflecting upon the prologue's time-jumps. It was a lot to take in.

Your critic is so fair and understandable, i really hated those channels who throw insults at the show just to please their followers (because most of them hated Amazon because it did not follow the sours material ) The problem is that they do not offer constructive criticism, and they do not even know how to save a show with capabilities like Rop They just hate it even though for me i like it better than the sand man , yes i don't like Galadriel character , And yes, I noticed all the flaws in writing , But I believe it can be saved , Through constructive criticism, and through the company's will to make things better and if necessary change all the writers

This was three weeks ago and you were hoping for RoP to get better. Boy, did you wait in vain! It seems that hatred for episode 7 was universal. On the other hand, HotD just had its eigth episode and, Good Lord! Talk of crying while watching and predictions of Emmy awards are everywhere. When was the last time that a TV episode made anyone tear up on three different ocassions?

I enjoy fantasy stories not gore. When I first watched S1E1 of GoT, I can't take it but years later, got the stomach to watch it and enjoyimg every episode. I tried to watch the first 2 LOTR movies... they both led me to sleep midway.

I’m probably not the best person to speak on this seeing as I’m generally not a huge fantasy fan, and admittedly always struggled to get into LOTR, but I watched the first episode and gave up. Beautiful to look at but painfully dull storytelling. HOTD on the other hand pulled me in immediately. Considering it is coming off the back of the lackluster last few seasons of GOT is a testament to its quality.

the thing about he elves coming to take jobs from numenor isn't about lazy or thinking the audience is dumb. It's that the people who say "insert Immigrant" is coming to take your jobs are just that dumb.

redeemed? They're prepping for season 2 right now and have a season 1 of this quality already airing 🤣🤣 It's a tad late for that. They should've fixed the obvious issues when editing with extensive reshoots. But I guess the Yes Men did their jobs.

i'll just say, HotD EP8 first couple of scenes: it was quite solemn yet it was well directed that u could literally feel the tension and stress between the characters on screen, even with few or no dialogues

8:52 I agree that the horse moment was one of her only moments of vulnerability and authenticity so far. My issue with it it that again, there was NO setup leading to it, so it didn't feel like a proper payoff. Or, if that scene WAS the setup, there hasn't been any payoff to it yet. The scene was totally random. The showwriters could have build up Galadriel's longing for horse riding... Or they could have featured another horse scene later in the episode. Compare this to TTT. You have a scene with Aragorn calming a horse and asking he be set free. Then later on you have a payoff when the same horse rescues Aragorn. Or, you have Shadowfax which is presented as "Lord of the horses", which justifies the long slow-mo and the majestic music when he's introduced. As a payoff, Shadowfax plays a key role when he comes back at the end with Gandalf and the Rohirrim.

looked more like a grimace than a smile. Why not have some friendly dialogue there if they really wanted to endear her. G'lad is bulldozing her way through the series like a terminator.

It's an interesting take but I think the problem you pointed out (no setup) overwhelms the rest. I'm not sure it shows authenticity if we don't know what's happening. Is she so happy because... she's never ridden a horse before? Is she always this happy when riding? Is it the scenery of a new land which is rare for someone 1500 years old? Who knows. It just jumps right into that scene, so I can't tell if it's authentic, poor acting/camera work in showing a really weird smile, or a reaction to something that happened off camera (unfortunately the show does a lot off camera, so always a possibility).

Great take I must say and spot on. I guess we all look for certain things that we like in a story for me it is when a story is adapted about returning to my personal experience of what I have read and seeing it playing out before my eyes. A little like being showed my own memories. When the creators go their own way straying from the lore or how I remember characters my enjoyment dissapears. For me listening to my friends watching RoP I early on realised this show was made for those who dosent care about lore but just about generic fantasy and well I dont like to get angry watching something so I have given it a pass, that might change in the future if the show survives and redeems it self.

@nean3075

Good question. Probably not enough screen writers (1-2 screen writers is just not enough to create a compelling story) and additionally lack of time..

It's a real skill set. Very easy for us to see when it goes wrong, but that doesn't mean we could all just write an amazing scene because of that. That is the core issue, but the reason it's such a big problem, is that Hollywood has a *terrible* system for selecting writers. It's a tricky subject to broach because the anti-semites come out the woodwork, but Hollywood *does* have a nepotism issue, its an industry of art, so you can't measure/assess performance clearly other than 'how much money something made' and shit written movies can succeed due to the rest of the production being great (Avatar is a great example of this, garbage script but the CGI/3D made it a mega hit) and then producers give credit to the wrong people and get weird ideas about what audiences responded well to.

I’m so confused - HOTD is terrible. I’ve just finished the third episode and I don’t think I can finish the season. The writing is bad and doesn’t make sense a lot of the time, none of the characters are likable, and most of the acting is bad too. So disappointing because I loved GOT so much.

in HofD we are there, as guests, to view significant occurrences... then the story moves on..... in RofP we are there in the story watching all parts of it, things may occure that are significant but we will only find that out if the story moves on...... one (HofD) is like reading an exciting book.. the other is like playing a sand box computer game...... the trouble is: TV is TV I want to watch TV... I should not have to have a copy of the silmarillion next to me as a reference source material guide to understand what is going on... a phd in Tolkien studies.. or a complicated rule book... they could have made a game..... these people in RofP are NCP avatars... they speak like them, fight like them and even walk like them (halffoot caravan) and the scene stages are just like RPG stages or levels...... the last one (hobbit vale, tree place) they used it so much from different angles they even wanted a flypast drone camera shot of the stage to say fairwell to the prop work & CGI tree.......... very poor

I only ever got past the first 2 seasons of GOT, and it was with a dragging head and a droopy sense of eagerness. So I did not go into HOTD expecting much- and yet, it has been one of the BEST shows ever to be played on my screen. As compared to this new LOTR show… something I was actually looking forwards to, especially since LOTR is my favorite book series. Just like GOT, it failed to capture my attention. I think what they both had mutually in common, was a lack of character pull for me. Something HOTD has in spades.
