I just want to say thank you for being one of the people that "gets" Dir en grey. A lot of people have the pre-notion in their mind that they're just "that j-rock band that was popular because of the Obscure video". I've been listening to them for over ten years, and i've never seen a band more dedicated (the lead guitarist actually has his pick taped to his thumb in some of these lives, the tendons in his hand came apart, leaving his picking hand pretty much dead, I saw them in NYC on that tour, and he literally had his fingers taped out of the way with electrical tape, and had his pick taped between his thumb and index finger, also Kyo's insane vocals have actually landed him in the hospital more than once, he's done serious damage to his throat with it in the past, their older song Ain't Afraid To Die is about that, he ruptured a vocal chord, and didn't bother to get it checked and it led to an infection that almost killed him and left him partially deaf in one ear, yes that insane vocalist is partially deaf), and one of the most artistic bands i've ever come across, if not the most. They re-invent themselves with every release. And every note and every word is heartfelt.

No I have to do a video for it. It is not on the list. But knowing it was written for that reason makes me want to check it out even more. Is there a good version you recommend? The more I learn about them, the more I respect them. That is an incredible level of dedication. I know what it feels like to lose part of your hearing. It is a very difficult thing. Thank you for the kind words. I truly appreciate it.

Obscure's official music video is very Japanese-horror. It's disturbing, and it got them infamy way back when. But it is artistic. I'm not sure when the last time they played Ain't Afraid To Die was, but Kyo's most emotional performances are easily "Zakuro" at Live Blitz 5 Days, and "The Final" at Wacken in 2007. Zakuro being about his ex-fiance, he didn't want to play the song, but they had to because they were playing their albums up to that point (2001, I believe), in full, he has a legitimate mental breakdown on stage, and they didn't play the song again for about ten years. The Final at Wacken 2007 is...something. Don't watch it if you're affected by self harm or blood, because he loses it a bit there too.

Even though this is 2 years down the road, I'm also one of those people who 'get' Diru. I've NEVER in my 59 years, have listened to a band that almost every song hits me so hard, I cry, literally. I was luck enough to see them in Japan in 2018, and I saw them this past December here in Denver. I cried through most of the concert. From the moment I heard Rinkaku, it has stayed with me. I can't claim 10+ years, only about 7 for me now, but Dir En Grey is it for me.
@flightgravity7483

If I remember correctly, Rinkaku was the first single released after extensive touring behind Dum Spiro Spero, Dir en grey’s album of heaviest material. Kyo wrecked his vocal cords and I believe he had polyps removed, yet he came back with his voice even more powerful than before. I think he finally got a vocal trainer.
@Baldmann

Alot of singers go through that unfortunately. Thankfully Kyo came back strong. This is an amazing song. I would never have been able to tell he had vocal issues. Thank you for the information. It really helps me learn more about the band.

I'm so pumped to see these kinds of reactions. I've been listening to Deg since 2000. When I was younger, everyone thought I was weird and even made fun of me for liking a band from Japan. (The irony since bands from Finland or Norway are all good, but Japan crosses some kind of line ( ͡° ʖ̯ ͡°) but I digress) It's so refreshing and great to see more people start to value what the fans have been talking about the the whole time. Past the shock value, the visuals, etc. are five musicians who work really well together and make something great. 8 year old me who fell in love with Dir en grey when I first heard the song "Cage" appreciates you giving Dir en grey a chance! Thank you!

Very well said. I agree. Some get turned on because of the image. Some get turned off because of the image. Personally I dont care what a band looks like, or what their image is. Does the band sound good? Do they make music that grabs me? Can I connect with it? Those are the important factors that drive me to like a band. This connection that I am forming with DIG has been amazing. At some point I will have to make sure the DIG playlist is in order of my first to latest videos on them, which shows the progress of my journey. It has been a surprise for me. and the support is amazing. Thank you.

Thank you for this! I'm glad you like their music. :) Congratulations on 200+ subs! I would definitely recommend a listen to Diabolos with english subtitles, because the lyrics to that song are so moving, in my opinion. Tsumi to Batsu is on the heavier and darker side, and this live video: kzitem.info/news/bejne/qKeo0n2PapOidm0 could perhaps show the sound pretty nicely. Being a long-time fan of Dir en Grey, I admire them so much for the things that you have noticed about them. So thank you for noticing them. They bring out the emotions and imagery in their music so well that it touches my soul. Their lyrics, music and performance just blends everything together to create an emotional pool for me to drown in... At least for me. The band members also work together to create the sound and image that all of them can be satisfied with, so not only one person is in charge of a song/music. It is the work of the 5 people's expressions. Now, sorry for the lengthy comment. I hope your channel continues to grow! Look forward to more Dir en Grey stuff from you.

Great reactions man, really liking your honest comments on requests and the way you also see the thematics and emotional aspects of songs. Now for the lengthy recommendations part >.< Since you don't seem to dislike having no video for the song I'll also include stuff like that. I'd really like to see you react to Imperial Circus Dead Decadence - Uta (or 謳 in japanese). They are japanese metal band that often uses conceptual stories in their releases. The dude recording both the clean and harsh vocals is beast, kinda reminds me of Dir En Grey's vocalist. They also feature female vocalist. Speaking of female vocalists, have you checked out Oceans of Slumber? Great band from Australia. Winter (Official Video) would be great to see. And finally some progressive metal from US, Native Construct. Some track off of their album Quiet World would be cool. The album is concept story about dude with a disability and his struggle (and mental downfall) with what happens with it. I'd like to see the last track Chromatic Aberration but if you want to get a video with it the opening track Mute has one. So yeah kinda long comment here, sorry about that. Really liking your videos so far, keep up the good work!
@Baldmann
6 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much. I feel like you are not getting the whole picture if you cannot see the emotional aspects, or the thematics of the track. Those aspects are big reasons why I love metal. Music should move you. I've heard some Oceans Of Slumber but not much. I don't mind just checking out a track. Most of the deeper cuts on a record will not have a video, and those are some of the best on the record. I love long comments. It means I get to type long responses. :) I will get them all on the list. Thank you so much for the support.

To clarify, the original Macabre is from Macabre album (2000), which is 10 mins long featuring much rawer vocal and instrumental. The improved version of the song from The Unraveling (2013) is 16 mins long. Both are great, but I would suggest the latter, just like everyone else did. However, it would be great if you check both versions out. Have fun, rock on 😁

You really should check out Satan's Little Helper's video on the evolution of Dir en grey kzitem.info/news/bejne/uYStvY2bj3-Wg44 They started as a more hard rock/pop rock style band. The first song compared to the last on is almost jarring. You get to see them, well, grow up. When they started their ages ranged from 19 to 22 I believe, so they were very young. They also recently celebrated their 20th anniversary this year, so they did concerts with a show dedicated to each studio album release from their second album onward.
