I saw a film clip where one of Evel Knievel's assistants told him right before a jump that they measured it and there was no way he could get up enough speed to actually make it. And Evel told him... well I ain't giving them their money back. And he jumped anyway

I saw Evel at the Great Southeast Fair, 1974. He was supposed to do a jump but not long before had a bad crash. After the Joey Chitwood show you could see an ambulance coming down the hill with red lights blazing. Pulled into the arena, rolled Evel out on a gurney in a body cast. They sat him on a bike (already started). Evel proceeded to do a wheelie around the dirt track a few times. They lifted back in the ambulance to applause from the crowd. Evel fulfilled his contract and collected his money.

Herman, same fairgrounds! The show we went to was either 76 or 77 because we drove in my good friend Ivan's new 76 Monte Carlo. Back then fairs were always in the fall. I do remember I-295 was just completed because we drove all the way around it, enjoying the beautiful night! Atlanta was a great place to be young in those days.

one of the highlights of my life was meeting Evel on the fourth of July and seeing him scream by on his rocket cycle in Butts Montana.. I didn't find out until much later that he was a dubious role model...but by then it was too late. I even went as him for Halloween...which in 1970's Montana meant trick or treating in a costume that could accommodate a snowsuit underneath. Looking back, the hero was my father..taking a three and a half foot Evel Kneival around in the freezing dark for his candy..Every single person knew who I was portraying too...he was that famous..Thank you Joe and Rob for reminding me ...Thank you Evel and Thank you Dad most of all..Evel screamed through the sky in my life while my Dad stayed nearby until his name was called Home..boys need role models both crazy and.sane..I'm glad I got to be young in the 70' s..now just a memory and a filter called vintage. And Mr. Zombie you capture the era so accurately in your films. No other filmmaker has made me uneasy for so long. And in concert I've watched as you strolled into the arena from the back..through the crowd..who parted in sheer adoration of you...but reached out to touch someone inspiring and frightening and mythic. All with dead cheerleaders gyrating on stage. Well done sir..well done.
@eyellgeteven9928

I agree with everything you said, other than I never got to meet Evel...the '70s were great, looking back, lol. I even started wearing Chuck Taylor sneakers again a few years ago, because they remind me that's all I wore in the '60s and '70s. Compared with what kids have now days, we didn't have shit, but it was a great era to grow up in, and Rob has a way of capturing that feeling...but with bad ass music! You definitely get your money's worth at his shows...I've seen him half a dozen times and never been disappointed.

I was dying 😂. Seriously though, it's like a mini Grand Canyon. I've been over it at least a hundred times (at least twice a year for the last 30 years) and it's still awesome.
