"Sehnsucht" : this german concept can best be described as a form of internal, painful longing for someone or something - an apt description for Schumann's Adagio and Allegro.
The wide emotional variety in this piece, particularly uncomfortable to play for us cellists, is absolutely perfect for employing a large palette of colours, vibrato choices, and (my favorite!), bow speeds. As for the uncompromising tonality (A-Flat Major) and the contorted hand positions we're forced to use, well... I better get back to practicing my scales and arpeggios... ;)
