richsoil.com/heat Today we unravel this statement "A rocket mass heater won't burn properly unless you use small pieces of dry wood. A wood stove will burn, but not well on whole, damp logs. There could be major efficiency improvements if the homeowner went from firing a wood stove incorrectly to firing a rocket mass heater correctly." And the frosting on the cake is that this is written by a person who states that she is "an engineer who consults on building energy efficiency."
Peter van den Berg starts things off pointing at a large chunk of wood and we pop it into the rocket mass heater.
Erica Wisner speculates that the concerns could be rooted not in a rocket mass heater, but in the tiny rocket stoves used for camping.
I put forth the idea that the statement comes from somebody that has simply zero experience with using a rocket mass heater.
Erica proposes another explanation where somebody has stored ten cords of wood and then switched to a rocket mass heater. It could take several years to use that wood and it would get drier each year. When the same folks were burning ten cords of wood, then a lot of that was harvested quite recently.
Kirk Mobert points out that with a rocket mass heater you get a LOT of heat from just a few small sticks of wood.
Chris McClellan points out that most of the desire for big chunks of wood is to get heat throughout the night with a conventional woodstove. But we don't have that need with rocket mass heaters.
Ernie Wisner finds giant blocks of wood that will barely fit into a j-tube.
I have burned green wood in rocket mass heaters before. It is less than optimal. About the same amount as in conventional wood stoves. The big trade off is that burning green wood in a conventional wood stove leads to creosote buildup. So burning green wood in a conventional wood stove is far more dangerous.
Kirk thinks a little bit of green wood mixed into the fuel for a rocket mass heater burns slighty more efficiently.
