Stamina was not the cause of loss in this particular match for Shavers. He was still in very much of control of his all faculties of boxing until the unexpected and well calculated, right on the bullseye power punch landed on his cheek by Lyle. Lyle won this match due to three key ingredients he always had and managed to hold onto in this match. 1)He had better stamina than Shavers in general.(Could go for 15 rounds without exhausting himself) 2)He could take power punches better than Shavers.(Better chin) 3)His power punches are as powerful as Shavers when he manage to land them, but perhaps not as fast as Shavers, but equally powerful.

That might have been an interesting brawl. Frazier was a notoriously slow starter who suffered a couple of stinging knockdowns at the hands of comparatively light hitting Oscar Bonavena. Meanwhile, Shavers was at his most lethal at the beginning of his fights. Look at that left hook he dropped Lyle with in the 2nd round. I think Shavers would have to jump on Frazier fast and brutally and possibly TKO by the 3rd round. If Shavers can't dispose of Frazier by then, he has zero chance of surviving Frazier's grinding body attacks and soul crushing left hooks.

"Earnie Shavers was initially the favorite to land the role of Clubber Lang. According to Shavers, Sylvester Stallone called him and told him the role was his once they got a formal audition out of the way. The audition was set up, with Shavers and Stallone sparring. As Shavers tells it, Stallone kept goading him not to hold back and to hit him with everything he had, but Shavers was reluctant to do so. Eventually, after Stallone began to hit him, Shavers lost his temper and punched him under the ribs, doubling Stallone over. Stallone was helped out of the ring without saying a word, and according to Shavers, he never heard from Stallone again. Interestingly however, this story has never been corroborated by anyone involved with the film." www.imdb.com/title/tt0084602/trivia

@Odawg96

The prancing with the hands down usually meant that he was HURT, winded, or BOTH. That was the case here. Right after Lyle rocked off on him beginning around 13:38, Shavers started that prancing. He did the same thing albeit briefly against Quarry..and we know how that one ended.

IMHO, I think Shavers was just poorly coached. True, legend has it that his stamina wasn't top notch or even above average. I've read that along with his ugly history with Don King he also didn't have decent cornermen backing him. You can't deny TRUE PUNCHING POWER which he has hence his nickname "the Black Destroyer" especially since he's more a compact heavyweight in contrast to "true heavyweights" being 6'2 and taller. Many fighters wanted no parts of him (Frazier, Foreman to be exact). So maybe that's why he fought "bums" as someone previously posted. Jerry Quarry was underrated it wasn't his fault he fought in the Golden Age regarding the Heavyweight Division of the 1970's. If you truly watch the Shavers-Ali fight Shavers actually won the fight and did go the full 15 rounds. Ali post Thrilla in Manila won several fights on his name alone that realistically he lost (Young, Norton III,etc.)

It’s not over till poor Shavers has his brains beaten out helpless and exhausted on the ropes, finally toppling motionless to the canvass. Those were the days, when the ref looked on as the unconscious helpless fighter was punched again and again. Lyle had the same treatment from Foreman, staggering around the ring before finally being beaten unconscious on the ropes. “It’s not artistic, but it’s slugging, the way the public wants it”.
Frazier never fought Lyle or Shavers. Norton never fought Lyle. After what Shavers did to Norton and what Lyle did to Foreman, You see why those fights didn't happen.
