Although Ropate Kauvesi describes himself as a "cog" in the machinery that was the Fiji Rugby 7s team to the Olympics, in reality, he is a superhero who played a pivotal role. Ben Ryan in his book Sevens Heaven on page 48 wrote, "He was a man who could always lift my mood." "He was good enough to become a future All Black too." "Immediate rapport with the players, relaxed and funny, incredibly organized." "On the training pitch he would start doing warm-up with the team and have them all in stitches with his slow-motion skills and tricks." "Everyone seemed to become his friend." In the concluding Chapter of Sevens Heaven he writes, "I missed him more than anyone else..."
It is rare to find reliable people. It is even rarer to find a reliable person who is humble, incredibly well organized and loved by those under his management. The Fiji Rugby players would obey him instantly not because they feared him, but because they liked him so much. To have a real example of a greatly successful leader on the world stage from within the Pacific who was not authoritarian is something to behold. Furthermore, it should be a model that other leaders should aspire to emulate not only in sports but also in life.
There are some people you meet that leave a lasting impression, Ropate is one of them! Knowledgeable, humble, kind, friendly ... what a gentleman. Will be very happy if Peter grows up to be like Ropate!
