Romeo constantly mentions how beautiful Juliet is, but, other than being the prettiest belle at the ball, is there ANYTHING Else Romeo likes about her? Not once does he actually try to get to know her. I really don't know much of anything about Rosaline, but I figure she and Romeo at least knew each other for more than a week before Romeo made some grand gesture and Rosaline just shut him down. It would make sense that he would do the same thing to Juliet, who had no point of reference to look on, and she went giddy with infatuation,

It took me a long time to realize that Romeo and Juliet isn't a tragedy because it's about two star crossed lovers that were destined for eachother, but circumstance kept them apart- Its instead a tragedy about two families who were so busy hating eachother that they couldn't even see what dumb trouble their teenage kids were getting themselves into. The tragedy is hate, not love.

Yet in the play, the older folks are just rolling their eyes and ignoring the feud. It's the young family members and the staff of each family that are continuing to brawl every chance they get. Don't forget Tybalt saw Romeo at the party and ran to tell old man Capulet. The old man said he'd heard Romeo was a good boy and to just leave him alone.

The entire play was a critique of the nonsensical romantic standards of the era, from Paris being the typical 'lover for status', Rosaline being the 'overlooked girl of the hour', and both sets of parents having relationships they're clearly not the happiest in. So, yes. Exactly as he intended.

Young girls who don't know better, see stories like this and get genuinely interested, or older women begin lowering their bar a bit too much, getting desperate, and sacrificing their standards in the process. Certain romance novels come to mind, along with various movies.

Well, that's kind of the point. They were dumb kids who should have been allowed to be dumb kids without it turning into a life-or-death crisis. If it hadn't been for the stupid feud, maybe they would have just flirted a little or exchanged notes before they got bored and it fizzled out. But the risk meant they had to sneak around and go all-in on everything, and we all know how that turned out.

I'm one of these people, too. Watching this short all I was thinking was wtf is Rosaline, we obv read R&J at school talked about it, but I was like 13 back then and we focused on the couple only with family feud as a background, and the culture is oversaturated with R&J being about true romantic love. And I find books about love kinda boring, so never came back to this one or to many others that talk about love.

Existe un manwa desde la perspectiva de Rosalinda. Obviamente no sigue la línea original, sólo toma los personajes y sigue con la vida de ella después de la "muerte" de Romeo y Julieta (en esa versión, ellos fingen su muerte y se fugan). También en esa versión Rosalinda estaba embarazada de Romeo y le rompen el corazón porque Romeo se fugó con su prima Julieta. Nostalgia aside, yeah, Romeo is a fucking whiny creep. Romeo has a special place in my heart though since it was the first time I ever got to feel like a boy. I was in 8th grade. My teacher was cool enough to let a """girl""" play in a boy-role. I didn't get to play Romeo in front of the parents though since it would be "gay" and my teacher didn't want to get fired by some homophobic parent. I was pissed as hell. The kid who got to play Romeo for the parents wasn't a fantastic actor, which was just insult to injury. I was pissed in no small part because "it wasn't even gay! I was playing a BOY! DUH! I'm not a 17th century noble either! It's all make believe! Plus Shakespearean men played the girl-roles back in the day, so it was only fair that I would be allowed to play a boy! Those parents are just sexist and ignorant!" Yeah... I have no idea why it took me until I was 22 years old to seriously suspect I might be trans.

@@moondivine2288 I agree except there's no reason to assume they would have lost interest. Maybe they would and maybe they wouldn't; but this rule that first love can never last is a modern invention. Even our grandparents' generation still were fine marrying their first love, not that you HAD to of course. Totally agree with everything else you said, though. If R&J's parents had supported them so they could date normally, they would have been able to develop their relationship normally over the course of years, decide what they really wanted, and most importantly survived.

People tend to forget or ignore the ages that Romeo and Juliet were. She was about 11 to 13 and he was about 16 to 19. Shakespeare himself would probably be shocked that people actually associate this with the true love.

@@cartooncottage2024 well, no one is even sure if he actually wrote the play or any of his others. Most of his work falls under tragedies. Possibly consider a cautionary tale, just like the original Brothers Grimm stories.

I mean back then people were marrying young, since yknow, people didn’t live as long for a multitude of reasons, I really only read the script of it for my English class but I really don’t consider this a tragedy, maybe some sort of comedic tragedy? Or tragic comedy?

But yeah Juliet’s dad was gonna make her marry like a day after her cousin died(can’t remember his name) so I feel like it was normal to marry around that age

I always say it’s a comedy. Romeo and Juliet is so funny and witty. King Lear is much more tragedy in my opinion

Rosaline and Friar Lawrence were the only people I liked when my English class was forced to read it. I was happy Rosaline swore to stay a virgin bc I’m ace and can kinda self insert there. But also seeing Romeo just completely abandon her was the best part tbh.

So many people throughout my life have referred to this as a romantic story. It was a purposefully written part of Romeo's character that he falls in and out of love faster than seasons change. The whole point of the story was "Young Dumbasses."

Juliet was not having daddy’s choice so she took Ros’ sloppy seconds. Romeo was depressed after being denied & was perving on her underage cousin. They were both scapegoats.

Romeo and Juliette is a great story, as long as you don’t think too hard about it. It’s meant to be entertaining, not moral, romantic, or anything like that. It’s a shame that schools seem to want to teach you about this beautiful romance… between a 12 year old and a 15 year old

It's also not what Shakespeare wanted the story to be interpreted as. It's a tragic tale of two young lovers whose obsession with one another got them both killed. There's nothing to admire about their love, especially when you consider they knew each other for only about 3 days before the killed themselves over it.

There's a manga (or manhwa?) based on this character. But Rosaline ended up pregnant with romeo's child before romeo left her to be with juliet. And in that manga (manhwa), romeo & juliet weren't dead, they just faked their death and lived somewhere far away. I forget the title tho, it's still ongoing.

To be fair, Juliet said before drinking the sleeping potion that she’d go insane and die if she woke up alone in the crypt surrounded by her dead loved ones so she REALLY hoped Romeo showed up (haha dramatic irony) and then Friar Lawerence (an adult) left her alone in the crypt with a weapon after saying if they were caught together he’d get in trouble.

Hi, our school was for bidden to read Romeo and Juliet and now I know why oh my fucking God… This was right before the Bella and Edward stuff had come out, and there had been a few novels before that and parents had gotten concerned that students would be overly influenced …😅 So we read McBeth instead 😂😂😂 Bubble bubble toil, and trouble bitches🎉

I've been reading this Webtoon called "Go Away Romeo" where Rosaline actually was in a relationship with Romeo, but he ended up ghosting her because he started dating Juliet. Rosaline got pregnant with his child and found out she was pregnant shortly before they both died, but they didn't actually die. Their plan of faking their deaths actually went through and they ran away together. Rosaline ended up finding out about this because Romeo had the audacity to send her letter after their funerals. Anyway. I won't spoil what happens after that, but I recommend checking it out. It's pretty good so far.

Honestly that story sounds like it does Rosaline dirty! In the actual play, he was obsessed with her and was sulking because she wouldn't let him under her skirt.....so Juliet's just a rebound! So glad she didn't actually let him have it, because I don't doubt it would have ended like "go away Romeo!"
