First off I just want to say how much I love how Tom brings out his director hat when he talks about episodes. You can tell that he really enjoys being behind the camera and I'm really glad that he got his directing start on Smallville. I think some of the best episodes were the Tom Welling directed episodes. What I remember when this episode aired was how emotional I got when I saw Christopher Reeve. It was something I never thought would happen and it really was unexpected. Where this episode shines is the fact that Tom didn't want to know the Superman lore so he really went in blind and that really elevated his performance. I felt that the key "drew" Clark to it and that's why he knew where to go. Kind of like a Kryptonian beacon that connected Kal-El and the key together. I liked how Jonathan just didn't want to accept the fact that his son wanted to go on this journey because he felt like he might lose Clark. From beginning to end, this is by far my favorite episode. Just hearing the iconic music gave me chills. It still does to this day. I actually look up that clip of Tom and Christopher for the Christopher Reeve foundation because it looks like they just enjoyed each others company. I'm with Tom, if I could give this more than 3 roses I would but 3 vases full of roses.

I am eleven minutes in and I want to answer Tom's question. @11:03, the purpose of the beam was a mechanism that downloaded the Kryptonian language into his mind, imbuing him with an extraordinary ability to comprehend and communicate in the Kryptonian dialect. The inkling of this extraordinary gift manifested in Clark's doodling on a piece of paper, as he attempted to make sense of the new language that had taken root in his mind. This gift was further evidenced when he was able to read the complex characters written on Dr. Swann's board. Moreover, it was this unique ability that enabled Clark to decipher the messages hidden within the ship, although it was not without its pitfalls, as his initial mis-interpretation of the language led him to believe that the ship's true purpose was one of conquest.

The scene with Christopher Reeve is such movie magic. There is this emotional weight that the scene has because Clark is learning this heavy stuff, like the existence of Krypton, it being destroyed, and the meta-context that Christopher Reeve is not only sort of passing the torch to another Superman, but also Swann considers his knowledge of Kal-El his legacy and Superman is, of course, a large part of Reeve's legacy. Add the music so perfectly used, and... "This is Kal-El of Krypton, our infant son, our last hope. Please protect him and deliver him from evil." 😭

Rosetta is one of my favorite episodes of the entire series!!!... Loved the scenes, the storyline and even the "B" storyline with Chloe and Lana... Lex getting closer to finding out about Clark... Clark's parents not only being concerned, but also wanting to be supportive despite their reservations of Clark finding out about his origins... Also, we get to see Clark confiding in Lana (which was a shock to her lol)... Pete being that brother for Clark to lean on... Obviously, Christopher Reeve being the legend that he was and as cliche as this may sound, it felt like Chris "passing the torch" to Tom. One of my favorite scenes is Clark talking to his parents and them being against him seeing Dr. Swann... Clark telling them: "YOU CAN'T PROTECT ME FOREVER!!!" and Jonathan responding: "I'M NOT READY TO GIVE THAT UP YET!!!"... Almost teared up on that scene 😢... I remember watching this episode when it first aired and nearly my entire high school talking about this episode as well as the series in general... Smallville was the link that connected me to my classmates because being a superhero fan back then would get me clowned by both my classmates and my teachers Another of my favorite scenes is Clark accidentally setting the barn on fire, which left a kryptonian symbol and Martha's reaction to Chloe showing up as it's happening... The camera showing Clark, Jonathan, Martha and Chloe looking at the symbol left on the barn was great cinematography 😊 My 3rd favorite scene (and I'll leave it here despite having more favorite scenes lol) is the last scene with Clark and Jonathan with that father-son moment while Clark is reading the message from the ship... Clark being shook on the message and Jonathan letting Clark know that Clark's future is whatever he makes it so it kinda gives that "Fate vs Choice" vibe 💯 Now, my Rose-N-Bomb rating... For me, this is 🌹🌹🌹(3 roses) as it gave cinematic vibes and not to mention the chemistry between Chris and Tom was great... #LoveThePodcastFellas #TalkvilleWednesdays #ShoutoutToAlAndMiles P.S. I'm 28 now. I watched a couple of episodes of Smallville when I was a kid but never really sat down and really watched it, because Christopher Reeve was and always will be Superman to me. But I've been watching through the whole show on Prime (Think I'm a quarter way through Season 3 as I write this) and I have to say this is one of the greatest television shows I've ever watched. The talent on screen (Tom and Michael obviously) as well as John Glover, Kristin Kreuk, Annette O'Toole, Jon Schneider really makes this world feel lived in. And when I watched this episode, even though I knew Christopher Reeve was in it, I cried my eyes out. I cried out of sympathy for him, and sorrow as we lost him 20 years ago and not too long after this was broadcast. But I also cried because the fact that not only did Mr Reeve give his blessing to the show and pass the torch to Tom, but the show also showcased the absolute titan and charasmatic actor that Christopher Reeve was and gave him this moment in the spotlight once again. I truly hope you guys keep doing this podcast because it's one of very few these days that is full of positivity.

This podcast episode is definitely one of my favorites, and not just because it's a good episode of the show. This episode has lots of honest and genuine discussion and tidbits about the episode. I totally understand sometimes when there are Smallville episodes that don't hit for the guys or they don't remember any facts about the shooting of the show, but most times it just feels like they're just trying to rush to the end of the podcast. Now, if there's some sort of financial reason, podcasts are just 45 minutes nowadays, or they're trying to rush to record the next episode, I understand, but when Michael takes the time to either let Tom talk about insights he had or bring up his own thoughts instead of instantly going back to the outline of the plot, it feels more like I'm finding out something new about this show that I grew up with rather than having someone recap the events of the episode I just watched. And if this comes off as me doing my own "shitting" on the podcast, I apologize, but I genuinely love listening to these three guys when they let the podcast breathe. I'll be honest, I could go for a 2 hour podcast more than the 40 minute one we usually get because I love hearing from Tom, Ryan, and Michael.

Fully agree. I actually rewatched the first and second episode of Talk Ville today just to remind myself why I got so excited about this podcast. In the start Michael didn't do the scene by scene readings, it actually felt like an organic discussion. Seemed like both were enjoying being nostalgic. Even Ryan brought notes and questions. I feel like Tom and Ryan still want that vibe but Rosey has kinda killed it with his speed reading, making Tom feel like he's interrupting, focusing on promoting Patreon and Socials ...he doesn't understand that if the podcast is awesome (like the pod for pilot ep) then people will sign up to Patreon for more and leave lots of comment anyway.. There won't be a need to keep asking so much. Agree that the episodes in general are getting shorter and quicker. How are they gonna sell merch for "the ultimate rewatch pod" that feels like a fleeting recap pod....

@Sports Really appreciate your opinion on the subject. You summed up all my thoughts that I didn't include. And thank you for the reminder that the first episodes were different. The recap totally works to keep things on track if it goes too far off topic, but I much prefer an organic recap and I even enjoy the occasional reminiscing about things unrelated to the episode or even just finding out what the guys are doing in their lives. I'm an avid listener to the Scrubs podcast and they often produce long episodes that go way off track, but I have fun and they still have good insights. To be fair, their podcast is produced by I Heart Radio and they have tons of sponsors, but my point still stands, I feel. I hope if any of those involved with Talkville sees these comments realizes this is meant as constructive criticism and also personally comes from a guy who always says his favorite show is Smallville. Zero deaths, zero saves, no antagonists as you guys pointed out but still one of the best episodes they ever made. It kept you glued to the screen the entire time. Even the little side story with Lana and Chloe doesn't slow it down. Also, when Clark burns the symbol in the barn, I love Annette's little "oh great 🙄" reaction when Chloe pulls up 😂

I love John Schneider as Jonathan Kent. The best TV dad ever. Also, every story I hear about Christopher Reeve makes me realize he must have been an incredible human being. Once again, I wish Al and/or Miles could be on every episode. It’s so interesting hearing about what all went into the production of the show!

My first memory of watching a movie at a theater is watching Superman with my Dad. He was his favorite superhero and he collected the comics. Obviously he became my favorite too, but I’ll never forget how much in awe I was with Christopher Reeves’ charisma. To me, he will always be Superman, as he was my Dad’s Superman and the one who introduced me to my years of collecting issues. Too bad my kids are more likely of Batman and Spiderman fans. 🤷🏻♂️

Amazing episode! Probably the best in the first two seasons. The awesome (in the actual sense of the word) appearance of Christopher Reeve was great, he did so well, and to hear of his dedication to the project is heartwarming. Understandable that Tom gets so emotional talking about this. I have to add I really liked how when Jonathan and Clark were talking about Martha's pregnancy, Jon says "You'll always be my son". Later, before Clark goes to see Swann, it gets turned around with him saying "You'll always be my parents" to the Kent couple. Wow! Through this episode, the strength of their bond was portrayed beautifully and really struck at the core of what Smallville is, especially in these earlier seasons.

Having Christopher be a part of the show just makes Smallville extra special and blessed, as no other live action Superman content will ever be able to do that ❤ Love, love, loved Tom speaking up more but noticed a lot of the time he didn't get to finish his sentences as Michael would take over. Tom started to explain that Greg Beeman directed Tom and Christopher but Michael just talked over him and told Tom's story instead. And Tom shouldn't feel he needs to apologise when he has something to say because his stories are always interesting and that's what we're here for 😉

This is a fantastic episode not just for talkville but for Smallville I very much enjoy the longer episodes of talkville. Hearing Al and Miles talk about the politics of doing a show seems like no matter what field of work you're in there's going to be politics. There shouldn't have been that much argument about certain things its superman Smallville has already had 35+ episodes what else do they need to do to prove their selves. Great show love it can't wait for next week

From "Smallville : season 2 : the official companion": 'Rosetta was the high point of the season,' Al Gough states. 'We had always wanted Christopher Reeve to guest star in the show -- it's something that we'd been thinking of since the pilot -- and I called his agent and asked if he would even consider doing it.We fouund out that he'd watched the show, and thought it well done. When we were arcing out the second season, we knew we had this character who was going to tell Clark where he's from and where he's going, and we wanted Christopher Reeve to play him. It's the passing of the torch. Obviously hearing that Clark is from Krypton and that the planet blew up is news to no one but Clark, so we wanted to find a way that could be dramatic. It's not just some backfill about his past -- there's a cautionary tale about Krypton. Is it so hard to believe that a bright race could destroy their own planet? We spoke to Chris, who's really a fantastic guy, and he liked the idea of the character, and then it was a logistical chessboard in terms of how we were going to do this.' Because Reeve was confined to a wheelchair, and required numerous helpers when he traveled, the decision was taken to film his scenes in New York, nearer to his home. 'We had a lot of lead time on that segment,' producer Bob Hargrove recalls. 'It was easier to send Greg Beeman there to shoot his scenes. James Marshall was directing the episode in Vancouver, and we sent Greg to New York.' Al Gough, Tom Welling, Greg beeman and visual effect supervisor Mat Beck worked with Christopher reeve onlocation. 'John Wells has always been very good to us,'Al Gough notes, 'and he very generously let us use the production offices from Third Watch to shoot the scene. We redressed a couple of rooms, brought Chris in, did a press conference, he shot for ten hours, never leaving the set, and then we shot a public service anouncement at the end. The next day he got on a plane for Australia!' 'The moment when Tom and Chris met each other was amazing,' Greg Beeman says. 'Christopher Reeve was a gentleman. We had a long scene, five or six pages, which is usually enough to cover a twelve hour day. I was told at first we had three to four hours to shoot, because Chris don't have enough endurance to go beyond that. I was quite intimidated by that, so I staged the scene very simplistically. I had Tom in front of Chris, and then he made one move behind. Chris said that it wasn't going to work -- Tom had to move arouund him or there would be no dynamics to the scene. As he said quite correctly, 'Tom moving around me will hide the fact that I'm unable to move.' We re-blocked it with that idea in mind, and it was much better, but on a mathematical level, it added a lot of shots. I went up to him and said, 'This is great, but there's a lot more to shoot, and I've been told that you can only shoot for four hours.' He siad, 'Oh, no -- this scene has to be great. It doesn't matter how long I'm here. Let's do it!' 'It was fun to see Christopher Reeve working,' Mat Beck recalls. 'He was thinking like an actor and also like a director. It was a cool little symbolic moment where the older Superman is acting with the newest.' 'There was so much weight to the environment that day,' tom Welling says, 'with the scene and meeting Christopher for the first time. It was a really amazing experience for me personally, on a professional level to work with Chris, and on a character level to get all that information. It was an amazing day.'

So glad we have gotten to this iconic episode of probably the entire series. Christopher Reeve the iconic Superman makes his first appearancebas Dr. Virgil Swann. The scientist who reveals to Clark his Kryptonian origins. I have always loved the entire segment in the episode between Tom and Chris. Always captivated me, I believe due to Chris's condition, he is unable to move and just uses his voice with such strength, power and poise. Have always loved the way he delivered the line: "This is Kal-El of Krypton. Our infant son, our last hope. Please protect him and deliver him from evil.". Said with such strength and fills you with wonder. The moment Tom as Clark touches the words for Kal-El and Krypton is amazing and has great emotion. As is the moment Clark reads the second part of the message. The musical cues of the John William's Superman theme was a brillant touch. Love the words of wisdom Dr. Swann imparts to Clark as well. Clark opening the ship with Jonothan and reading the message was a very well acted scene on Tom's part: Clark worrying about his future destiny wether he was sent to conquer, and Jon reassuring him that he was here to be a force for good, not a force for evil. Such a powerful emotional moment. Again, the John Williams theme was a beautiful touch. Finally, Tom and Chris doing the PSA for the CRPF was a wonderful and fun moment to end on and a great passing of the torch moment between them. Overall, a brillant, beautiful episode of Clark's discovery and tribute to Chris Reeve written by Miles and Al.

Seriously I was 13 in 2003, I grew up on watching Christopher Reeve's Superman movies. His portrayal of Superman and of Clark was phenomenal. He literally was Superman. Such a legend. When he became paralyzed, I remember it because both of my parents loved Superman so much and his portrayal. His accident was so sad and tragic, but true love between his wife and him. I watched Superman, the adventures of Lois and Clark, which I loved. I remember the scene when Dean hit a homerun then ran and caught it. I absolutely love tom wellings portrayal of young Clark Kent learning his powers. You can really see the impact his family had him, his morals and values. Tom really was Superman. When Christopher Reeve had a cameo on that show, I literally lost it. Probably first time I ever cried watching a show or movie. I thought that was so cool and so epic for them to bring in the original actor to talk to young Clark. When they made Superman Returns, I really really thought they were going to do it with Tom Welling. I was so taken back, even Christopher Reeve said it should've been Tom. I have always adored Superman and these portrayals really show more than the alien with powers. They show who Clark is and that his morals and values come from the Kent's who found him. Legendary actors. I cannot wait to watch Reeve documentary coming out. I still love Cavill's portrayal also. But Tom is best then Reeve then Cavill. I really do love Dean's Superman also. SUPERMAN RETURNS with Brandon though was pretty iconic portrayal to Reeve's Superman portrayal. Please Tom come back to legend!!! You are him. Scratch this animated series. LIVE ACTION!!!!!!!!
