Just want to clarify one thing: We don't expect every knife to have perfect centering, in fact most of the knives we have are not perfectly centered. Some others even touch the liners lightly, that's how uncentered they are. While that's a flaw, it's not a game changer. The reason I made this video specifically to point out this flaw in this case is the severity of the miscentering. The blades are wedged pretty tight (the video I'm sure doesn't do it justice) against the liners, and if you aren't careful, the blade actually sometimes will land on the top of the liner when closing the blade. This is what makes this notable enough to make a video dedicated to the problem.

This issue is not isolated to Rough Ryder knives. I just returned a $60 Case knife to Shepherd Hills Cutlery that had terrible blade rub. Sometimes a bad one gets through QC. Quality control is the real issue. At the low prices charged for Rough Ryder knives, there won't be a lot of "hands on" QC. More bad ones will get through. SMKW has great customer service. They will make it right.

I’m so used to that!!!!!!! I have 40 of them and I keep buying them........ knowing when you buy Rough Ryder knives just simply expect not great fit and finish maybe once in awhile you get a decent one!!!!!! I collect them because I want to have more than Tobias!!!!!!! Lol hahahahaha

I know exactly what you mean, I'm generally quite happy with Rough Ryder, it was just strange that all three from this series that we got were so severely off center that they hit the liner while closing. I also would like to get more, but I'd need to sell all my earthly possessions plus a couple kidneys to get close to what Tobias has! xD

My ones have this problem, but since none of the edges directly contact the liner it doesn't bother me that much. I personally have been using my stockman as a daily user and it is perfectly functional.

Good to see I'm not the only one.... the spey on my Stockman has the exact same issue. Definitely looks like it's warped to the left, & it contacts the liner when closed. I have to consciously bend the blade away from the liner while closing. Maybe some in the comments think your edge rubbing brass is a non-issue... I am not one of those.

You should call SMKW and tell them your issue. Perhaps they might send you a postal shipping label in a package with your replacement knives. SMKW stands by the RR brand. The availability of the replacements may be an issue, however, as that Bow Trapper is a popular model. In addition, SMKW ships the knives from a different location than where the service department is located. They will not be able to inspect any knives before delivery. On a side note I am curious about how long it took to develop the patina on the Trapper?. What's the weather like where you live? Did you force it?

Thanks for tuning in, Don, and thanks for the comment! You're right that they have great customer service, but one of our issues here is trying to limit exposure to the pandemic as we have a family member that is immunocompromised, and our post office is set up in a way that you're kind of stuck in a crowd. We'll probably just eat it. In regards to the patina, you're right, it's forced. While I do have several naturally patina'd knives, our temperate weather makes it take a long time, and you just end up getting rust from sweat in the pocket before you get that semi-protective patina on it from use. About an hour in vinegar is all it took to force it here.

Did you notice how the sheepsfoot blade on the stockman is ground backwards causing it to be heavily bent towards the main blade? Or, how the main blade is ground as if it were meant to share a layer with another blade which doesn't exist on this knife? That's more than just fitment error, that's a fundamental design error! It's like they made this knife from spare parts that were meant for other knives. But that's not the case because the stainless stockman has both of these same problems!

Wow, that is very poor from Rough Ryder. And you're right that considering the price, it's not really worth shipping it all the way back to maybe have the replacements not be any better anyway. They should definitely send replacement ones to you anyway, that's really bad!

We certainly wouldn't expect that, but we also wouldn't turn it down if we were offered a chance to take a look at ones that have a proper fit and finish, that might make for more positive reviews!

I like Rough Rider knives. They're affordable and they come in a big variety of patterns and series. Normally their quality is excellent, but I have encountered blades being off centre. They also use off centre blades incorrectly. I you look at your Stockman's blade well when all blades are folded you can see an example of this. Irritating. 🙄 I suggest that you find Johnny Juke's channel. He has an excellent video which shows how to fix blade centering simply in a couple of minutes. Good luck. 👍

Needless to say, I was both kind of shocked that all three of the Rough Ryders that we have from this series have this severe blade centering (never seen that bad on the 440a models) and disappointed. Oh well, you win some, you lose some, just turns out that we lost big time this go around.
@GratefulPanick

That's crazy! Rough Ryder's fit and finish can be hit or miss but that's pretty severe. I'm wondering if they botched the heat treat on the carbon steel and it caused the blades to warp slightly. Although it's odd that they all favor their respective cover sides. This is some X Files type stuff lol.
@practicalknifereviews1600

I'm with you, it's bizarre! Their 440a knives do have hit or miss fit and finish, but I've not seen anything like this before. I'm guessing it's something with their T10 carbon steel too, but I have no idea what would cause that. And the video doesn't quite do it justice, because you can't feel how hard they're pressed against the liners (the trapper's clip blade, for example, favors that side so much that if you're careless when closing it, it sometimes clips the top of the liner on the way down!). If I lived anywhere remotely near SMKW, I'd just bring them in and try to exchange them, but honestly I don't think it's worth mailing them all back and hoping for the best (plus, like I mentioned, we really are trying to limit how much we're in public during the pandemic because someone in the house is immunocompromised). Oh well, they still cut when they're open, so I'll find uses for them nonetheless. Thanks for watching!

@@practicalknifereviews1600 yeah that's one of those "how in the world did this pass quality??" type things. I'm very curious as to why this is a thing. I think at the very least Rough Ryder/SMKW should be made aware of the problem.

@@GratefulPanick That's a good point. I guess I could at least call in or email them to let them know about it. And if you know anyone there or anyone looking into buying this series, feel free to share this video with them so that they know about the potential problem! Centering issues can be fixed..here's a link to a video by Johnny Juke showing how to center a blade on a traditional slipjoint. I've centered a few knives using this method. Those are pretty severely off, but if you're not going to send them in for a replacement, it might be worth a try. kzitem.info/news/bejne/o2xv4K2na5SAimk

They're handmade, decent quality materials, strongly put together and a lifetime warranty. I'm in Canada. I have about 50 Rough Rider, Frost etc folders. Here and there, there are little glitches but no problem for me. Some of my carbon touch the sides. I had one Coal Miner black sodbuster that didn't close unless you pushed it close. I made a video, sent it to SMKW and they sent me a new knife for free to Canada although it wasn't the Miner which was out of stock. They told me to choose what I wanted. If it's really bad, instead of making a youtube video send them a video. BTW they now have a new higher quality version. I just found Black and Blue Elephant Toe for $17 on sale at Chicago Knife Works. It has a wharncliffe small blade and blue sawcut bone sides. Don't look at it if you're weak on resistance like me. Ha

I did send this to them, and they did rectify the situation (videos to come). The reason we came to youtube first is because we pride ourselves in always giving unbiased, honest assessments. With these three coming in all with the same severe problem, we judged it to be worthy of a video to inform our viewers of the potential issue they might face. But certainly in the coming Rough Ryder videos, we will discuss their warranty and customer service!

One thing that strikes me as ridiculous is all the extra space around those blades when they're closed. You can lose 50 cents worth of pocket change in there. A well designed and manufactured traditional knife, all three blades will fit close together with a very minimum of excess space left in the handle.......and the blades will all be centered and not rubbing against each other. This also gives the knife handle a slimmer, more ergonomic profile. I've noticed too, Old Timer/Uncle Henry knives now made in China have this same problem. The ones made in New York were vastly superior in every regard.

I know exactly what you mean! As I understand it, this construction allows them to interchange the same blades between multiple knife models, which cuts costs (and therefore allows for them to sell it for less). Totally agree that it's nice to have them thinner, though it's worth a brief mention that the thicker handle does have an upside when really bearing down on the knife as it fills the hand a little more. But you're right, less space would be better!
