@@SPXLabs ;-) What's your VPN throughput in & egress ( vs the endpoint speeds)? I setup openvpn from scratch in ubuntu 10 years ago and had problems with tiny UDP fragments so the speed was pretty low, but again, long time ago and they might have worked out that problem

It varies but usually download is 100Mbps ish and upload is 50ish. Latency is like 180ms or worse. The internet plan there is 500D and 100Up

@@SPXLabs That Latency is horrible ... 180ms ... are you sure? Maybe someone else was running a download / backup / sync at the same time, or the routing is totally OFF eg going thru an ATT datacenter in NYC. Run a traceroute and find out. Otherwise the speed might be limited by the TPLINK hardware, there's gotta be some max they claim it can handle through VPN

It’s been this way for as long as I’ve had it. The speeds I’m giving you are from my typical setup, like a Firefox container to the vpn, which I believe is the issue. I’d have to give it a try from my laptop to the server more directly. When I get some free time tonight I’ll do another speed test with pure hardware.

Great video! in my case, I deployed an OpenVPN Access server on AWS and set up user profiles which I imported into the ER605. It all works and my devices are able to access the internet but my internet speed drops considerably from 120Mbps to 20Mbps. If I disable the VPN on the Omada, my speed returns to normal.

@@SPXLabs Spent the weekend going through each and every setting on the ER605, ended up contacting TPlink. They confirmed that the speed is capped at 21Mbps due to the limits of its processor. And if I opted to use the L2TP option, that is capped at 42Mbps

In your diagram at the beginning - you have the OC200 connected to the internet ( cable modem ? ) and you have the ER605 VPN router connected to the OC200 and the TL-SG2210P switch connected to the ER605 VPN router That leaves your OC200 vulnerable to the internet . Wouldn't you want to have it connected to the TL-SG2210P switch behind the ER605 VPN router ?

@SPXLabs

The client to site should be bidirectional by default, that’s the only way to establish a connection between the two. So any traffic at the site gets encrypted and sent to the client when data is requested.

i am kind of confused here. I have home server running truenas scale and i want to be able to have access to the web gui without exposing it on the internet. currently i am having access via ddns and domain site. I can also install openVPN on my server direct and possible to have safe access between the devices through Internet. So i came accross tp-link ER605 and i was hoping buy purchasing it i will be able to connect to my home network and access my server and possible to have it as WOL (wake on lan) in case my server will shutdown so i can switch on again. Can you help me understand better? I am about to buy the tp-link, or if u have any better alternative. thank you

Hello, nice video and very useful. I just bought this router and I want to test this scenario. What I want is to declare a list of websites and only when I visit those specific sites to have the public IP of the openVPN server, anything else not. I mean everything else I do should be done through my public address as normal without being connected to this VPN. It is possible to create such rules with this router? Thanks in advance!

@@SPXLabs Is not possible but based on ipgroups you can select which computer access the internet using the VPN. When using l2tp ipsec you can even select the protocol but you need to add a policy routing as well. In other words you can force only specific devices to use the VPN, not the entire LAN.

@@theWhip0815 it works but works terribly. I am still using it as my gateway to my ISP but not using the VPN configuration anymore. Also it wasn't out of the box configuration, I had to grep random forum posts to get it working as I expected and the configuration was entirely manual, so if the VPN changed anything on their end the connection would fail (didn't happen but still something to consider). The silver lining is that I don't recommend this one (ER 605) for this specific purpose.
