You may be familiar with Royale High’s classes-from art to English, the developers have attempted to design these classes in ways that mimic skills that would be useful for these subjects in real life. For example, English class hones spelling skills via a quiz format, and baking class guides players through the sequential process of producing pastries. However, one day, I was going through a typical Royale High school day and realized that there were certain classes that were different-the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) classes.
It’s great how Royale High includes chemistry and computer class to normalize these subjects for its audience; however, these classes are designed in a way that feels more like a “dance” class. Players tap/click letters or colors on the screen according to a presented sequence. In contrast to the non-STEM classes, we can see that nowhere are we actually trying to help players work on skills that would help them in real STEM subjects.
Royale High is an incredibly popular game and with that popularity comes responsibility. The game has a largely young female audience, which is the target audience for many organizations/initiatives that are trying to increase female representation in STEM. Currently, despite the fact that they are nearly half of the U.S. workforce, women make up only 27% of the STEM workforce (US Census Bureau).
How can we change this? We can start by changing the perception of what a person in STEM looks like and one’s “natural” ability in STEM subjects. With players already spending hours of their lives in classes to “farm diamonds,” why don’t we redesign the classes so that players are
actually fulfilled intellectually by the “farming” process
actually honing skills that would translate to increased interest and better performance in the real world
Today we propose alternative designs for the STEM classes in Royale High to address these issues. By making small changes in the designs of media/games that we interact with at a young age, we can make significant ripple effects in our society. Hope you enjoy :)

All chemistry simulations are from PHET’s Chemistry Interactive Simulations (phet.colorado....) which I have found to be extremely useful resources to learn STEM subjects :)
