I am glad I am not the only person who still feels mostly in the dark after watching this well-intentioned video. Without any prior ham knowledge, I got my Technician Class license five days ago. My handheld radio should arrive tomorrow. I have never sent a ham message. My post is meant only as constructive feedback for DXEngineering's marketing department. 🤔

I still don't know what it is. Do you type messages? What format? How does an exchange work? How do I tune it in? Stuff like that....???

I used RTTY in the Navy during the 70s-80s. Simplex, duplex, full-duplex.

Sent one RTTY message back before I joined the NDARNG when they were trying to recruit me. Marion Eagles are number one. Back in 1978.

I have tried RTTY previously with some success. Interesting mode no doubt. Thanks for the historical backgrounder on RTTY! All the best. de kc5ngx

Agree. Seems to be an explanation for those that don't need an explanation.

Great Video! I have an Icom 7300 and have been down many Rabbit holes to get this to work with N1MM, all failed attempts...

I think I can help you.. this describes a somewhat more involved setup for use in contests, but it is detailed enough that you should have little trouble following it. Even if you don't use the COM port splitter or N1MM logger, you can set up MMTTY with the 7300 for basic RTTY operation and monitor the daily ARRL digital bulletin when it's sent with RTTY. drive.google.com/file/d/1tZW57EhZfZ3eqNkW7Pk9gK9_M1XhhIoo/view?usp=drive_link

Former Navy RM1 here. Used to work on TTY’s and love them. We never used FSK because all our TTY comms were HF. Only time I used FSK was when I had to get around EMCOMM ALPHA (no HF or Radar etc) and relayed a Red Cross reply while on deployment (kinda tricky and took a Helo crew with big brass ones to pull it off).

I had a lot of fun in the 60’s working with Navy Mars on RTTY. When we didn’t have any real traffic, we would exchange “pictures” made by various characters printed across the page to create a crude image. We would save these “messages” on punched tape to make it easy to resend. Had a lot of fun just rag chewing with the Navy RM’s via text. My dad was amazed I could send and receive typed messages from a ship in mid ocean.

@@billmoran3812 My hometown is OKC. Big high-powered AM station there. Couldn’t pick it up around JAX since there was a station on same frequency, but once we got out to sea it started coming in. 1,000 miles out it was the best signal overnight.

I got the Ham Radio Deluxe software this year. Been making contacts on PSK31 and only one contact on RRTY. My RTTY contact was on 15m last month with a station in Germany. I wish there was more activity on the digital modes besides doing contests.

I was a teletype operator in the Naval Security Group in the late 60's. I thought it was cool. Now? Not so much. I just got my general upgrade a few months ago and plowed into HF. I love it. I like the 'personal' contact I get with SSB phone. I thought I might like the RTTY and PSK aspects, but not now. And I learned nothing from this video.
