Just bought a 454 Alaskan, what a gun!!! most impressive snubby I've ever seen. went into my local gun store thinking of a 460 or 500 but gotta tell you this gun looks more well built, dense and solid than the X frame monsters. beautiful thick construction, a real gem

My cousin has this monster and it is a blast to shoot; in many ways. It's fun to handle something that powerful just to punch your man-card for the month every so often. That being said, it's much more accurate than it's snubby barrel would suggest and the recoil, while significant, isn't anything to really be deathly afraid of. Respected though... absolutely. I flinched bigger than snot when the cylinder came around to an empty chamber and I felt the need to pull that trigger one more time.

Nice review of a beautiful gat brother Tom. I have seen this revolver also in 460., another massive round for a handgun. No real use for it here in Chicago, but if i was in bear counrty, this would be a gun i'd want on my belt. Mike

I purchased one of these in the 454 and it has quickly become my favorite firearm that i own. I ran winchester platinum 260 grain and was suprised when the recoil wasn't as bad as i thought it would be. Very controllable. Paid 830 up here in Alaska!

I have the ruger 454. About 3 years ago Disk's Sports stopped selling ammo. They had about 200 to 250 rounds of the 454 hollow point ammo for 9 dollars for a box of 20; I brought the whole damn lot. You are right this is big black huge bare gun if you need it. Hold on, two hands tight, the recoil is going to be rough. the double action trigger pull is very light and the single action trigger pull is super light. What I like is that you can load a 45 cal then a 454 next given you 3 rounds of each. Why, you might need a rest to get back on target.

My Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan .454 is SWEET. I actually over estimated the recoil. I gripped it so tight at first I could barely aim. I've got the latest generation (beautiful) and didn't find it much worse than my hot load 10mm out of a Glock 20. I didn't have any issues shooting it (other than I can't aim) even though it's the most powerful handgun I've ever shot. I've yet to fire the hotter ammo yet, and the 1200ft/lbs stuff did leave a the mildest ache later, well worth a life or death with a Grizzly. The grip rocks and if any women above 120lbs had to carry it in the woods for safety she would not complain about the recoil after saving her life. (works on really large homosapiens too.)

I am a target shooter. For a while when I was starting out, my only available center fire gun was a short barrel revolver. And with a dot sight mounted on it, I am sure it was just as accurate as others with longer barrels. The longer barrel just does a better job converting pressure to bullet velocity. The writer Emily was trying out rental guns to buy and someone handed her a .454 with very long barrel. Just to make the guys stop laughing, she fired a full cylinder, best group of the day.

That is certainly more compact than the bear-protection firearm we use in Alaska. Our choice is a 12g shotgun, loaded with alternating '00' buck and 1.5oz rifled slugs. I'm not sure I want to get close enough to a charging bear in order to use the .454. But to each their own. Very nicely-built pistol though.

I have my guns in many different vaults & safe rooms, I am different. I agree with you that a .454 is not practical in your home. But, what if you had your family in one room with you, upstairs, & you wanted a .454 hollow point to go down stairs... I am as safe as it gets when it comes to my family, thanks for commenting.

You know the old trick paint ballers use? The use non stick spray like "Pam" and that makes cleaning easy or at least easier. It's made to withstand high temps and used in non Teflon frying pans with great success. Keeps burnt cheese and melted caramel from sticking. I've used it on my compensator for my Beretta 92FS.

Tom, that's a great looking revolver. The 454 is an extremely powerful a round. In this small platform it seems somewhat impractical. With such a short barrel I don't think the full ballistic potential of the round will be achieved. I would think at least a 4" barrel or longer would be warranted. The smaller size translates into less weight which will generate more felt recoil by the shooter, making the gun more painful to shoot or be accurate with. Too much gun for me in that small a size.

While as a fellow .454 Alaskan owner I share your enthusiasm in these fine pieces, we will disagree on the suitability of it being a good bedside gun. Any gun will be uncomfortably loud if you must fire it indoors but one of these will be absolutely deafening, painful and permanently damaging to your hearing (don't count on remembering to put on your hearing protection at 3am). Not to mention the fact you will have the over-penetration factor to worry about.
