Used your video to recreate a flag for a military going away gift. The stains you use are awesome! The red is a little thinner than the blue and required two coats to even out. Using the razor blades to separate the blue and reds on the union is genius! Instead of pocket screws I use a 1/4" plywood backer board that I glue all the stripes to along with glue in between the stripes. It was very helpful in keeping the stripes flat during glue set. An $8.00 piece of ply was cheaper that the pocket screws. I ended up carving a fighter jet in the top 7 stripes right of the union and the name and position on lower white stripes with a router. They loved it and asked for three more! Could not have done it without your video and thanks for sharing great techniques.

I'm glad you liked it. I've thought about using ply for a backer instead of using the pocket screws...I have another flag build in the works (once the heat in Vegas dies down a bit), I I'll probably use the ply backer for that build. The inlay you did sounds like it turned out awesome!

You have probably the best looking flag I have seen built so far. Just a few questions. Is it possible to do the burn on the wood after everything is stained and stars engraved prior to clear coat? Would it wreck the stain? What size kreg screws did you use? What kind of wood?
@MoonBuiltGarage
4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I would think burning the wood after being stained would ruin the stain..maybe test it out on a scrap piece first. I think I used 1 1/2 Kreg screws, but I'm not really sure. As for the wood, simple pine strips is all I used. I'm thinking of trying out some other woods to see how they turn out.

I’m looking to get into flag building just more of a hobby for fun make some for friends and family since I’m with the FDNY can def find a home for a ton of these. This was one of the few videos I’ve saw though that it was put together with screws rather then just wood glue. Do you find that to be better? Feel like that requires much more work and a higher skill level.
@MoonBuiltGarage
4 жыл бұрын
Thanks. The only reason I went with screws is time. It was quicker to use screws than it would have been to wait for woodglue to setup. As for more work or more skill...It way take a bit longer to assemble since you have to drill all the holes, but its still faster than waiting for the glue, and it really doesn't take much more skill to sue screws if you've got a good jig for drilling the holes.

The tool @8:05 is a Kreg Pocket Hole jig. All it really does is drill hole in which to use screws; it drill the holes in such a way that the screws are recessed.
