It wasn't until today that I realized the M&P 340 existed. It is the evolution of the S&W J-frame series. S&W is one of the worst about making it easy for consumers to compare differences between their models. The 642/442 were top dogs and will continue be in their own price range, but the sight setup alone on the 340 seems to be well worth the price difference, not to mention the 357rm rating and the few ounces shaved off. Buy once, cry once. I'd be happier if they offered it with the moon clip compatible cylinder like they do with the 642/442 "Pro" series. ("Pro" is in quotes, because all it comes with is that cylinder...) Thank you for your videos and input!

When hiking in the western deserts I carry my M&P340 with Hornady 357 125gr, FTX.loads for bad guys and mountain lions. Directly behind my 340 I carry my S&W 43C J frame (12.3 ounces loaded) .22lr loaded with 8 rounds of CCI blue tipped snake shot, for the Mojave Green snake if needed I love this setup and it works well for me, I carry both guns in Galco FL160b holsters. the two guns almost look the same and cover easy with a tee shirt.

Master Shooter thanks for sharing! I have to say shooting mags out of a scandium / titanium j-frame is very brutal. For me I am use to it but for the average person they want nothing to do with it as it is painful.

M&P Bodyguard 38 spl +P is the best deal and has the best grip in my opinion. That's what I carry the most. You don't really need the extra light wt. of the scandium frame. You can get it without the laser for about $350. Great j frame.

Hey whats your holster system for when you cycle? I have to cycle about ten miles to work and ten back. My clothing options are limited. At this point I have a S&W BodyGuard .380 in a pocket holster. But I put the gun in between my Under Armor leggings and underwear, it actually fits firm and easy to access. Only problem is my gun is soaked with sweat during the ride.

@TheOl1911

Tom Nelson I wonder if it was the scandium version? There was talk around the shops that the scandium frames seem to crack under pressure (literally). Many years ago I owned one (my j-frame was a 340PD) but I recall there was a even more expensive version called the 340sc and I had a friend that owned a 337ti that cracked back in 2001. I'll always remember that as it broke right at the range. The cylinder needs special care because he didn't bother reading the manual and he screwed up the finish on the cylinder.

Revolver Den Yeah I do prefer the 442/642 over the M&P 340. I am no longer a fan of scandium frames. I've had issues and the more people I talk to have had issues. Also a 357mag in a j-frame is not the most practical. I'd move over to a M60 or the SP101 (save some money) if I wanted to shoot 357mag in such a small package. Granted I would only use Gold Dot Short Barrel 135gr through these small wheelies.

Not sure about the need for a laser and this front sight, believing this gun is meant for CCW and a range of around 5 yards or less where a sight doesn’t help much. Right now 10/2020, I’d like to replace my 638 with this gun but it’s about impossible to buy a gun now.... I’m not interested in shooting .357 out of this gun, I’ll stick with 38 special +p. I’m mostly interested in the weight reduction of the 340 compared to the 638....

Hi, I appreciate your opinion but what is the real difference between the MP 340 & 340PD obviously I read the SW site, I am asking about the rounds you can shoot, 340PD nothing less then 120 grain but the MP 340 doesn't say that so does that mean it can shoot any grain weight . Thank you for any opinion you can give on this topic.

340PD is made with different materials thus is more prone to damage. 340 M&P is all steel I believe. So not as sensitive to what 357mag loads you use. Honestly 357mag out of either 340 M&P/PD is brutal! More brutal through the PD

I honestly would look into the 642/442. This 340 M&P was nice when I owned it (sold) but honestly I do not feel it can handle a steady diet of 357mag as I put a ton of it through this thing and I had to send it back a few times to no avail. 38spl+p is probably more logical in such a small package vs .357mag. This one came with the laser grips so it was more. I can't remember what I paid but I believe used they go for $700. NIB would be at least $950. One with no laser grips used I've seen for $550. NIB $750

I ssuggest that you use ONLY the ammo recommended by S&W in your MANUAL! Very special m aterials used in manufacture of this firearm require very special use and care. Those marks that are showing on front of your cylinder are TELLING you something!
