Yeah I had problems with the very first box of ammo. I cleaned and lubed it up real good, then manually cycled the action about 150 times. It is %100 reliable now, even with flat face ammo.

Great video exactly what I was waiting for, a real review from a normal guy like me. Not one of these gun channels that magically all guns are perfect and never have problems. They are in it for the money anyway. I was waiting for this M&P for years since they discontinued the 357sig, but I am going to wait a bit. Almost every time they come out with something new a recall follows. Also interested in the full size M&P 45 Performance Center and I haven't seen one anywhere nor seen any videos of one. Perhaps I should buy one and make a review on it 😆

They've gotten more pathetic. Last year they offered some replacement mag spring/followers and RSA. It's a nice gesture, albeit useless, because they send you the same underpowered stuff. And the RSA comes in a baggie that says "recoil spring assembly, 45" - actually telling you that it's not stiff enough. Now if you call them, they'll just tell you that it needs 500 rounds to break in and not to use any "hot ammo", Underwood specifically. If you try to insist that it's SAAMI spec, they lose interest. 'Send it in". Well, most people who did, report that they "polished the feed ramp and did a test fire, operation normal". Translation: "this 40 S&W Long operates as designed" /sarc. Galloway and Springer do offer great replacement springs (I recommend starting with 24lb. but personally will be trying 26lb. non-captured from Springer). That solves all issues except the mag drops with heavy hardcasts, which are due to poor mag geometry. Only manifests when you load more than 5 - that's where they engage with the mag release through the mag catch window. The only solution I came up with is to load 10 Xtreme Penetrators and top with 5 hardcasts. We're talking "woods ammo", not hollow points, those tend to run fine with the proper springs. IMHO they made a great gun with a bad mag and stocked with inadequate springs. The lore has it that the M&P40 also started out with 9mm RSA, later to be replaced with a stiffer spring (green paint color coded). It's always the trivial stuff that sinks ships and space shuttles, figuratively speaking. I'll look up the update videos, not sure how I missed this one.

Great Video, like the intro, wasn't expecting that! lol Very good shooting and excellent trigger discipline on that dry snap on the .40 s&w. Haven't had a chance to get my hands on anything real high on the velocity chart yet, but hopefully will soon. My unit seems to prefer bullets with some curvature to their profile, I had two of the S&B sharp angle flat nose do the same thing your's did, just a tap to complete battery. Ran some of my defense loads from a few years back (155 hornady XTP) and some Cor-bons (135 grain), both with curve profile, they feed reeeel fast and very nice. Like your "recreational area"!

So far, I've only gathered up 300 rounds of the S&B 180 gr JHP for a range test. That stuff supposedly moves at 1165 fps. I'd like to find a defensive round that reliably feeds in the 1250 fps range.

i tried two types so far in my M&P 4inch 10mm and had good results over-all. Maybe three total malfuntions out of four hundred rounds. The ammo I used was really hot UNDERWOOD 155 grain full metal jacket at 1400 fps with close to or at 700 muzzle energy and Mag Tech 180 grain at 1200 fps and had more issue's with the lighter loads than witht he Underwood. Next I'm going to try out the Fiochi 180 hollow points that advertise 1250 fps and will see how it does as I try to hone my Red Dot sight in on target. It looked like the firearm was having its malfunctions on the last round in the magazine with the hotter ammo. My Ruger 10mm was having similar issues. Actually, I was having 2 problems. The first was a similar feeding issue like what you're experiencing. The other was that it would periodically lock back with 1 round left in the mag. Ultimately, the recoil was jarring the last round forward in the mag, causing it to either contact the slide stop or cause the feeding issue. The simple solution was a 10% stronger mag spring. This stopped the malfunctions completely. Then I put a 24 lb recoil spring in it to help stop it from slinging brass 20ft away 😂

Interesting vid. I've had my 4" 10mm M&P for about a month now. I was slightly limited on ammo at first but initially shot 400 rounds of 180 grain UMC through it and 60 rounds of Sinterfire through it and it shot that just fine. Then my Underwood 220 grain stuff came in because that's the round I will he carrying the most since this is a gun I'll be with in the bush. Since Underwood isn't cheap I only fired one box of it and that one box feed with zero issues. I'm going to the range again today and maybe I'll fire off another box of 220 just to see....maybe order a heavier spring too as a must in case. :o I bought this gun to shoot heavy loads and really don't give a rip about range ammo. btw, I've also shot the Underwood 155 grain XTP and it functioned fine. The only ammo that I have that I haven't shot through the M&P is a bunch of UltraMax my friend gave me.

HOWEVER, my son was shooting it, I was there as a witness, and he did get a failure to feed twice with 220 grain Underwood and both times with a nearly empty magazine. I have read that there might be an issue with the magazine springs. Yet my son and I are also different sized as he is much smaller framed than me so it makes me wonder... Right before winter came I ran a box of Underwood 100 gr. Extreme Defender and also a box of 140 gr.- flawlessly. So I dunno? I have shot it two handed, single handed, off-hand and I cannot get it to burp. I have been carrying it as my daily with the 140 Underwood fodder I like and trust it so much.

Great vid. I think it is a magazine issue. The round appears to hit the top of the chamber and getting stuck. This indicates that the round is coming out of the mag early. Smith needs to adjust the mag lips to prevent the round from jumping out early when firing hot ammo.
@theturkeysopinion

That is definitely what they are hanging up on. I'm not sure if it's the magazine follower angle or if there is some kind of bounce being created. I think we would have to watch it in extremely high frame rate slow motion footage and then we could figure it out. I have a feeling that hot rounds are flexing this gun like crazy. Keep in mind it is a polymer frame. In my opinion Smith and Wesson might have the least rigid frame out of Springfield and glock. That may be why they stayed away from 10 mm for so long. Well, perhaps they are out of spec and not seated to the proper depth. Did you do any measuring? How is that a valid test?
@theturkeysopinion
2 жыл бұрын
This is a valid test because I now exactly what I'm doing. We had problems with factory ammunition. Are you telling me that Underwood is out of spec and Hornady is out of spec? Reloading: I can promise you this... I am one of the most diligent handloader/reloaders there is. And yes there is a difference between reloading and hand loading. Sometimes I hand load my ammunition because I feel I can do better than the factory. I inspect my brass prior to starting, I resize, deprime and inspect again including chamber checking and case length( Not that it really stretches in handguns much ever). I meticulously weigh my powder charges for anything but basic range ammo. When loading these in particular I trickled them down to the EXACT grain. I measure each and every bullet with a caliper. They run through a basic chamber checker and when they are all done, every one of them goes through a very precise Lyman chamber checker. I also have a collection of proven functional perfect factory bullets that I keep near my reloading bench to constantly reference what factory loadings represent. I have reloading manuals and publications dating back 20+years.... I also used to work somewhere that I produced ammunition on a commercial level. We handpressed the weird stuff and ran 9 mm on a huge progressive with all the bells and whistles. SO... With all that said I think that this test is completely valid. The gun failed with factory ammunition and handloaded ammunition that was hotter. It did mostly just fine with lighter stuff. When it did choke on lighter stuff it was with factory ammo not my handloads. The only absolutely rock star hot loads it would shoot were one type of Underwood ( defender or penetrator ) AND my hot as heck , GOLD DOT handloads. So one of the best performers was my hand load. Consistently great performance in hot ammunition area. Again, test is completely valid. And if you read through the comments section you will see many other people experiencing the exact same problem a 100 times over. And Smith&Weston is doing a multitude of fixes indicating they don't know what the heck they're doing at all. Thanks for watching! I don't know why I took so long to explain myself but hopefully you understand. 🦃👍👊

Great video. If it won’t run with full-power 10mm, it’s hard for me to want to buy it.The 10mm Glocks and XDs all struggle with full power ammo and run great with “medium velocity” 10-mm. I just don’t want a pistol slightly more powerful than a .40 S&W in a bigger package. If I replace the recoil spring and mag spring, I can get them to run, but at a reduced magazine capacity (due to the larger spring.) The only off-shelf 10mm that will launch 180-grains at 1,200 to 1,300 fps reliably for me so far (meaning thousands of rounds without a stoppage) is the SIG 220, but it’s a single stack and it’s heavy. Also, I’m sure your grip is fine. A gun that jams when your grip isn’t perfect is a defective machine. A properly timed tool, like a G17, will run all day with a limp wrist. A G23 pushing a 180-grain at 950 will jam with a limp wrist. That’s the gun’s fault, not the shooter. Keep up the good work.

I put them in a Glock 20 and 29 all the time, but I’ll admit it’s in a KKM fully supported barrels. I use it hunting deer, pig, javalena and black bear. Been doing it that way for over a decade now. I used to use DoubleTap and Buffalo Bore, but switched to underwood and haven’t looked back. Zero reliability issues with my Glocks. I love my M&P 2.0’s in 9mm, but the Glock 10mm’s still reign KING!

I just purchased the 4.6 inch barrel M&P 10mm, it ran great with Armscor 180 grain range ammo but then I tried some 180 Grain Sig Elite Performance JHP ammo, apparently going about 1250 fps and the weapon had the same issues you did for the self defense loads. I just ordered a Wolff springs M&P 45 4.5 inch guide rod and 20 pound recoil spring. (Apparently the 45 and 10mm Smith and Wesson long slides have the same guide rod.) Plus I ordered a set of extra power magazine springs from Springer precision. I'm not going to use this gun as a EDC, just when I go into the woods hiking and/or camping for defense against large 4 legged creatures, or any two legged pickle heads that want to FAFO. For your 4 inch model I heard that you can order a ISMI flat spring for the Glock 20 gen 3 rated between 20 and 24 pounds that will work for your defensive loads. The only thing with that is you have to disassemble the factory S&W guide rod in order to install the new recoil spring. Apparently no one makes a stand alone guide rod for the 4 inch 10mm yet. Thank you for your no BS review. PS, the turkeys are pretty cool.

That sig elite is definitely on the hotter end! It's pretty nice stuff. But that stinks that it jammed you up. At least you've got some corrective measures you can take. I'm really surprised they haven't made a 4" guid rod/recoil spring replacement yet. And I wish somebody would have had those magazine Springs before I get rid of mine for sure. I'm going to give it a go again some day. I was really hoping they would just hurry up and redo it in the 3.0 or something. Let us know how it goes after you get your new stuff in there! That will be interesting. Thanks for the report and thanks for watching! You can have these stupid birds too lol🦃🦃🦃 so annoying sometimes👊👍🦃

Hrm.. Need to try out some of the Hornady defense rounds I have to see if I have similar issues out of the 4.6 in. that I have. I've ran a ~300 rounds of 180 grain FMJ on it so far and the only failure to load that I had was due to a manufacturing defect on the round where the lip of the case had a defect. Definitely need to see if this is an issue with what I loaded for defense rounds to make sure that I know what I am working with. -edit to add- The rounds that I am using are rated to run 1120-1150 FPS.
@ghostfox8550
2 жыл бұрын
Just a quick follow up... 30 rounds on a 4.6 using Nosler Match 180 Grain JHP(1150 fps at the muzzle), no issues on a 4.6" barrel. With the 4" version that I have access to using 180 Grain JPH Sig Sauer JHP (1250 ft/s at the muzzle) JHP yielded 1 failure to feed along the lines of what was seen in this video in 15 rounds. Need to test the 4" with the Nosler that I have and the 4.6 with the Sig Sauer if I have more. Will need to run more out of both to see how this proves out. Most of the issues that I am seeing seems to be with the 4" version but really want to know how this proves out to see if I need to reserve the 10mm M&P 2.0 to a range gun until S&W can address this
@theturkeysopinion

Wow! Good work! It really does take that kind of scientific ish approach approach to try to catch some of this stuff. Those nozzlers are pricey. That's the only reason I didn't use those. And I think you're right about the 4" being much more problematic than the larger version. It could be something as simply as they didn't think they needed to tune it very much for the compact version. I really wanted the 4.6 but just could not hit my hands on it in time. In time/ my patience level lol. Interesting to know how it works out! Thanks for watching!

@@theturkeysopinion Thankfully I was lucky enough to catch some Nosler JHP at a good price but I am limited in the supply (~300 rounds, which I've used 30 for this) that I have and don't want to run through everything that I have testing since I have other 10mm that I know will feed it without issue. I have a few boxes of Nosler 180 JPH, one box of the Hornady 180 grain JPH and one box of the Sig Sauer v-Crown 180 grain JPH that I've already used 15 rounds of as part of this personal test. There is a local ammo manufacturer that makes the FMJ that I use that I've had no problems (over multiple calibers) with other than the defect mentioned in the original post that I am considering picking up some JPH to see how they run. Looking up what they have, their JHP is rated at 1150 fps which not as hot as the Sig Sauer loads that I ran on the 4" so it wouldn't be a one to one comparison. Really is looking like it may be an issue with the hotter 10mm but what I am questioning is whether it is with the S&W 10mm across the board or if the issues are limited to the 4" version. I have some thoughts, as a Mechanical Engineer, about what might be going on but don't know enough about the specs and specifics of the different components to really be able to say anything more definitive.

Gen 2 of this gun will be fine. That said I would lose 2 rounds so the grip can be smaller and make the gun more concealable. You can always extend magazines to whatever you want. Regarding FTF issues maybe you're limpwristing it? idk I haven't seen other shooters demoing this gun but then again they might've edited that info out being the good little M&P minions they might be. @theturkeysopinion

Sometimes the slide reciprocates so fast, hard and violently that it doesn't properly pick up the next round. Or it can pick it up and slam it too quick to properly enter the chamber. Sometimes also the slide can reciprocate too quickly before the magazine Spring has a chance to push up the next round. I'm sure there are many other reasons but those are the main ones that come to my head. Also sometimes the extractor can act weird on a very hot round.👊👍🦃

as far as FTF .... 1 - I noticed your failures were late in the game, was the gun fouled? 2 - You appear to have a good grip, but a short (under 5") action and hot ammo requires and absolute DEATH GRIP because YOU have to hold the frame still while the action does it's job. If you let the frame absorb the recoil, the slide can't function properly. This is a classic FTF on hot short action guns, such as pocket 9s or 3" 45's
@languagesource355
