Alot of people forget just how suicidal Kratos is. He literally was denied his own death, and I think Faye's message literally tells us that Kratos has had nothing to live for since then for a very, very long time. But now, he finally does, so asks death to help him continue.

I hope that most players caught that the stories Kratos tells, this one included, are just references to himself and the lives he's lived. In this one specifically, he's telling this story with the "knowledge" that he's going to die very soon. He saw the mural in Jotunheim. He knows what the giants foretold. Kratos is the old man. The logs are the burdens he's carried. The really beautiful part is that later on he realizes he wants to live, thus the way he ends the story.

He has lived a long life, arguably one longer than most people who make the life choices he does. Not to mention that he has made it clear through this game as Ragnarök grows closer that their victory is not guaranteed. It is why I think Faye appears to him now, I personally think that his dreams and memories are her way of speaking to him and reminding him of important things she tried to tell him. So this story is mad deep. On a surface level, obviously the logs represents the burden Kratos carries. But keep in mind after this, we see the tree where Faye leaves her handprint. In the first game Kratos has to cut it down at her request, even if it's one of the last mementos he has of her, and he literally bears the weight of carrying the timber. The logs are all the death and loss Kratos has experienced. He's endured it over and over again, and even though he has purpose for it now, he's so tired. At the game's end, he finds meaning to carry on because now, he has finally gained more than he had lost.

Most people after going down the path of revenge that Kratos has traveled find that they die along the way, they find themselves without purpose and die, or they themselves are killed by someone else who wants revenge. I think it is fitting that Faye appears at this particular moment.

The first time when he's going to bed to get rest, he throws down the blades and places the axe down with respect. @@TheGreatDearLeaderJimPickens Agreed, Ares favored Kratos and chose to help him for a reason. His conversation with his first wife implied that he sought out battle for his own sake and pleasure and not for the sake of his nation. He became even worse after Aries saved him, as well as after his family was killed. With each loss or disappointment, he seemed to delve deeper into violence, pain, death, and bloodshed as if it would somehow help. When he decided to lose himself to revenge then he became his darkest disregarding everything for the sake of vengeance only hesitating when he began seeing Pandora as another daughter. In the end, he learned the hard lesson of revenge, it makes promises that are poison laced with honey, revenge promises that if someone kills the object of a vendetta that everything will be fine. Revenge makes promises it cannot keep, offers relief it cannot give, and catharsis it will never deliver. Kratos is a man who followed the path of revenge and bloodshed to its inevitable end and managed to live through it and see the folly of it. Kratos has wanted to die even in Greece, that is no secret. He has tried to end his life more than once and I have no doubt that a part of himself wanted to die for a long time. In this game, he seems to be preparing for that inevitability and I imagine a part of him is looking forward to no longer having to carry the weight of his past with him. He felt that Faye being gone meant that the best part of him was gone with her, but he has always had a choice, he can allow the better part of himself to die with her or he can choose to be better despite her no longer being around. His son needing him seems to be the reason he has continued to stay alive, but on this the last night before Ragnarök, it seems he was certain he would die. Faye appearing to him in his dream at this point almost feels like her effort to convince him to find a reason to continue living. In the end he did so, Kratos of Sparta, the person who sought out bloodshed for his own glory and pleasure is gone, the new Kratos has taken his place. And both he and the realms are better for it.

Throughout all the years of kratos trying to kill himself and wanting to just rest and escape his misery. He has now been put in a position where he actually sees a reason to live. It seems to me that while Kratos has tried to stay alive for Faye and Atreus for years, a part of him has never really let go of his longing for death. I think through the course of this game he has been looking forward to death and now it seems he think he really will die when Ragnarök comes. I know that some people assume that his presence on the battlefield guarantees victory and that if he dies then he will always be able and willing to come back regardless of the circumstances. Kratos himself continually warns Atreus leading up to this point that Odin will not die easily. Odin has been preparing for this for hundreds and thousands of years, he has gathered power, knowledge, armies, weapons, and everything else that could give him the slightest chance of changing the outcome. He can and will throw away everyone and everything for the sake of his survival. As Kratos points out, their victory is not certain by any means. At any rate, Kratos is powerful, but I believe that no being in fiction is completely invincible and there must be a way to kill him permanently even if it never ends up used. Besides that, how can he come back when a part of him wants to stay in the land of the dead for good this time? It is a complicated situation which I am grossly understating.

There something soo deeply touching and painfully ironic in a fact that a man who longed for the release of death for so long having nothing to live for, now did find peace and love and just wants a little more time. Reminds me of my dad who was bitter about “wasting” most of his life on a pretty impressive successful career before meeting my mom and settling down and starting to appreciate simpler things like going fishing with me. And being a late child (I was only 20 when my dad was already 70) I could feel this sadness in him which I could not understand at the time. Now I get it was This… I don’t know how to call it. Grasping and clinging to good things in life knowing your time is almost up. Wanting to spend time with your child, wanting to teach him things and acrid you won’t have enough time to teach him ever and protect him forever, that he’ll be alone without you someday and yore just not ready to accept it yet. This scene is made and acted masterfully and actually made me cry because of evoking this memory. Called my dad immediately and invited him to go for a beer and just hang out lol. Small detail I love, the chains for the blades of chaos are not attached, but they disappear subtly when kratos' arms are out of view.

I grew up playing the old gen god of war, the 3rd person, button spamming, very little combo buttons, and watched it grow to this. I couldn’t be any happier with a game. This game brought out the feeling of fatherly love, approval, acceptance, bravery, and so much more. All in one. This is the game I will introduce to my child the second I can. This has various life lessons and there’s so much that can be learned from kratos and his past.

Those games...... I feel a hole inside of me now that they are finished. But I also am relieved. I have played god of war from my ps2 when i was 8yo. I was seeing this game as a go and kill stuff but now that i know everything. I know im much alike kratos cause i grew up with him. And those scenes and much more hit me deep. I have the sense that this game is real somewhere, it sure is in my heart though. Im glad Kratos found his peace, after all he has been through, he deserves it. To any fans I want to express how glad i am about you that loved these games and i wish you the best! Farewell brothers and sisters the journey is not done for them, we know that, but we dont know what happened after that. Goodnight

Just look at him (Kratos), how much he loves his son (Atreus).. No other game as ever captured me like this game has! It's the small details I loved. Like at the end he asked Mimir if he taught Atreus "How to woo"? Knowing Angrboda & Atreus liked each other!! What a brilliant story.

Nah. The scene where he was missing his son and remembering how he swore to protect him, and when all the burden of the world visibly has fallen in his shoulders, and he was having a choice of staying soft and breaking or embracing rage just to be able to withstand, that was damn sad. Now he's just coming to terms with everything.

Kratos reminds me of my Dad he was rough, hard with a 79-89 I.Q and all he could use was his left arm talking like a caveman who had been through much my Dad Bruce (who is no longer around RIP) was hard, angry but he went through more than anyone should even try to, he was not very smart but he knew much in his own way Kratos reminds me of him....RIP Dad

One thing I loved about this scene was how Kratos actually respected the Blades of Chaos by hanging them in his tent, rather than tossing them to the side like he did before.
