I rescue horses too, and I also rodeo. I'm a bareback rider. These horses are treated fine. A lot of them are really friendly, and this is just their job. They're really tough, and incredibly strong. More so than most horses. They're really taken care of well, I have to hand it to the stock contractors. There's been some amazing leaps and bounds made in the bucking horse industry.

Wrong. they are shocked and beaten to act like that. Also the riders have spurs on and are just kicking them repeatedly. And just look at how they are ripping the horses faces. The horse is CLEARLY in pain.
@thegreatnoldini

@@Urmeli_Kull None of what you said is even remotely true. I competed for eight years, and four professionally. Our spurs are dull and free rolling. We use them because it helps us get ahold of the horse as they're bucking. They're going to buck regardless. They're untrained and unbroken horses, so they buck when they have a rider on their back. That's what they do. Also, they aren't "ripping their faces" the hack rein is attached to the horse's halter and you lift on it to gain leverage stay in your saddle as you're spurring. The whole point is to not reef on the horse's head.
@Urmeli_Kull

It doesn't matter if they are using dull and free rolling spurs. You are still hitting a horse with mf metal. The spurs cause blunt trauma to the shoulders which don't have time to heal before the horse is ridder and spurred in another rodeo. Horses even have thinner skin than humans so just imagine. Also it doesn't matter if the horses are untrained, its still not ok. You are traumatizing these animals for fun. It is not fun for the horse. The horse is scared and in pain.

I know plenty of bucking horses that are just fine mentally. They're trained and well taken care of. They're made for this. A lot of them are actually really friendly sometimes. This is just their job, just like how Dressage horses have their job, or how race horses have a job they do. It's no different really. They're also a lot tougher, and a lot stronger than most horses are.

I was looking at all the comments and I noticed a lot of people saying that rodeos are cruel and sick because of the use of the flask strap and the supposed maiming of horses. I did some research on this however and I found that... 1) Bucking horses and bull are trained from a young age to buck. The flank strap is only used to enhance the bucking. A flank strap is a wide piece of leather with a specialized knot to allow a loose tension to encourage the animal to buck. 2) If you tied the flank strap to tight then the animal can not move, it binds them, it hurts them and they cannot buck. If the flank strap is too loose the animal will not buck because they are not stimulated enough. 3) Anatomically a bull or horse have no genitals in the area that the flank strap is tied to. As far as putting rubber bands, barbed wire etc. around the genitals of the bulls. People have died trying to do much less to a bull. As far as tying anything around the genitals of the horses. They use MARES (Female Horses) AND GELDINGS (Male horses that have castrated) there is nothing to tie to. They do not use studs/stallions for bucking stock anymore because they had the tendonsy of coming back to hurt the cowboy, they would also fight in the pens or the trailor and end up hurting or killing themselves or a person. Studs/stallions have not been used in rodeo sense the late 30's. 4) If you watched long enough, you would see that after the rider has been thrown off, the animal stops bucking and CALMS DOWN. They go back into the waiting pen. 5) If there was something shocking them or if there was barbed wire or rubber bands tied around the animals genitals, the poor animal would be in so much pain, it wouldn't move at all. It would lay down and moan. It would hurt to much otherwise. As for shocking they would run and run, no bucking, just running to try and escape. I'm not saying that there are not corrupt rodeos that are cruel to their animals, but I just think that if there were, all the caring people (like many of you in the comments section) who want to do something about the animals welfare, would do so and report the cruelty of the rodeo and have proof. If many of you still do not agree, would they please reply to this and tell me how my info may be wrong, or even point me to a site where they have proof and eyewitnesses? And (respectfully) please don't give me PEETA sites. I find that the photos they have seem like they are set up and some the stories that they have "eyewitnesses" for tend to be exaggerated. I see very quick cuts off to the next rider, meanwhile the horse jumps off screen, still clearly irritated. 5) ...What? Sorry, child. Your research is incorrect. Wife of a retired cattle farmer here, and he hates the rodeo more than I do. Let's start with 1). ALL prey animals will react to the flank strap, there is NO "bucking gene". Some horses are more reactive. Period. 2) & 3) The Flank strap is tied around their sensitive flank area (duh), the most vulnerable portion of any prey species anatomy. The flank sits immediately in front of their genitals. Like right.beside.them. It is NOT the same as a "belt". Lots of stallions are used, look up Grated Coconut. He'll let kids ride him, when he isn't being flanked to buck. 4) REALLY? You don't watch enough. I haven't seen a bronc yet that stopped when the rider came off. They stop bucking when the thing that MAKES them buck comes off. The flank strap. BTW, Calgary Stampede sends their bronc culls to slaughter. Just thought you should know.
@thegreatnoldini

When they are two years old, they will be run into bucking chutes, and will be conditioned to that environment. They will be tested with a flank strap and a dummy. A horse's natural reaction to having anything on their back at that age is to buck anyway. They're simply rewarded and encouraged with positive reinforcement when they buck the dummy off at that age. They are not tried with riders until they are 4 or 5 years of age, and it's the same process. They are trained to continually buck

I would like to point out to all of you a few things One, I ride horses often, and am around these animals and study their body language If you watch, the horse's ears are almost never pinned, they are not in physical pain and if you were to watch a full ride including the aftermath, you'd see that the horse stops bucking almost every time, there are horses that keep bucking but every horse is different, it really does depend on if they were trained gently or abusively I am not saying that every one of these horses are treated well, yes, there are some really abusive and terrible ways that rodeos run their bucking animal events, but thats not what all rodeos do, there is a way that you can train the animal to buck without being abusive My last point is that at my local rodeo, they do not tighten the bucking straps to where it physically is causing pain to the animal, they tighten it to where is causes just enough discomfort to wear the animal will buck, in a lot of the pbr or nra rodeos they do tighten them to tight (in my opinion) also at my rodeo if you are caught using any form of electrocution on the animal you will be banned (i beleive that is the rule), so yes there are very abusive and wrong ways that these animals are run, but there are plenty of ways to make the event much easier and gentle on the animal, and no, i am not saying that it is a completely non abusive sport, no matter what you do in rodel there will be an aspect that somebody will find abusive and that often times is true. I just ask that we all think and do research, not just make "educated" guesses. It would help the debate over this issue be much less dramatic and far more peaceful between people. I'm not looking to start a full blown argument i am just pointing out what i have learned and witnessed in my years of being around this type of environment :)

Also, as stated before, the PBR and PRCA both have hosted events where no flank straps were used, and the animals still bucked, simply to disprove the fact that these straps "force animals to buck." There is no "force" involved with anything. When the animals compete, they do it willingly. If they don't want to buck, they won't leave the chute. If they don't leave after two tries, they simply remove all gear from the animal, and another horse is used. No big deal.

The flank strap is simply to enhance the motion of the buck. The horse will buck without it, because that's what he or she has been bred and trained to do, but the flank strap will keep them from kicking out sideways and all over the place, which makes it safer for the horse as it's a cleaner motion with the kick, thus reducing the chance of it tripping and falling down or breaking a leg.

Also, the shock devices used are not tazers. A tazer is designed to shut a living being down, not make it hyperactive. Another thing to remember is the cattle prod can only be used if a horse stalls in the chute when the gate opens, and it can only be used with the rider and stock contractor's consent and may only be used in the hip or shoulders. The shock has virtually no amperage, but a lot of voltage. I've been shocked by them before, so I can tell you from experience they don't hurt.

Shelby The Husky these horses are worth more than you’ll ever in in your life. They are very well taken care of, as they are expensive af. The strap in front of the hips helps with them not bucking too hard; or they could actually hurt themselves. Like if a bunny kicks to hard, their back breaks. The strap is there to apply pressure and keep them from kicking too hard. They are trained to buck, because they have been trained that way since they were young enough to be ridden. It’s in their breed to buck, like a thoroughbred to run. The spurs are very dulled down. They do not use cattle shocks, prods are different; it’s just a stick that has vibrations. And I would know, I’ve been touched by one. Like the ‘electric’ pens, or joy buzzers. These are also run by big and responsible organizations. Do you see how fit these animals are? They do vet checks, profile checks, and drug tests. It’s like the Jockey Club but the rodeo version. The JC only allows tracks with clean records, and does drug tests on their horses. And thoroughbreds aren’t the big horses in slaughter; it’s Quarter Horses. Got a problem, tell the AQHA that. Do some research before you try and make an argument.

If you watch this video carefully you will see that the hoses are not actually spurred The spurs are dull and only really touch the hoses skin. The rider starts the horse as the man said by holding the spurs under the horses neck the first jump, and then rakes back to the back of the saddle to keep the rider balanced and leaning forward into the jump, then the feet go forward take the jolt of the front feet hitting the ground and to keep the rider from going off the front of the animal and breaking his neck which is an occupational hazard, and a serious one. These horses are big, extremely violent, athletes, and can and do injure cowboys seriously, as I personally can attest to. Starting a good horse out of a chute is tantamount to slapping Hulk Hogan's face. And it is all delicate balance staying aboard such energy, with just a bucking rein for contact.

The prod leaves no burns or anything. There's no damage done. Also, the reason he moved his spurs over the withers is because he was marking the horse out. It's a mandatory rule. The spurs have rowels that are free rolling, and very, very dull so that they don't hurt the horse. The most they do is ruffle their hair. I've tried hurting myself with them before and it just isn't possible. He probably marked the horse out too early though. You're not supposed to mark out until the horse moves.

The stock contractor I work with has an alternative way of getting horses out that don't leave the chute. When it happens, we run a neck rope around the horse, and we ride the gate and pull the horse out of the chute and usually that works just as well, with less 'shock factor' for the horse. It just requires more physical labor, which is fine by me.

@cookiepony They aren't broken so they can be used in these bronc events. After they retire the broncs, they usually turn into very good horses. In fact, the horses you see the other cowboys on that catch the bronco and pull off the flank strap, usually are ex saddle broncs.

@horsieproductionss Actually these horses ARE trained to buck. At 2 years old they start training with a dummy on their backs. At 8 seconds the dummy is released and the horse is REWARDED for bucking. They are trained in reverse from being trained to ride. The flank strap doesn't make them buck, all it does is enhance the motion. These horses would buck without the flank. All the flank does is make their feet go straighter and higher.

@msjumpingqueenful 1. A cattle prod has almost no amperage, and only puts out 5,000 volts. 5,000 volts isn't even as bad as a bee sting on a human, so it would be even more mild on a horse or a bull. 2. Because there is no amperage, there is no burn, so it's not even permanent "damage." 3. Your average police tazer puts out 50,000 volts and quite a bit of amperage. So there is a HUGE difference between a cattle prod and a tazer.

@ridingismylife558 In a way, bronc riding is working with the horse. You have to be totally in sync with every move the horse is making, and you're letting the horse do it's own thing. You aren't leading it or anything. If you aren't in sync and making good time, you usually end up in the dirt.

Yeah, many times. I work at a ranch that raises bucking horses, and a lot of times, we'll slip on the flank and it will fall right off, and the horse will still buck. At RodeoHouston back in March, there was a horse that had the flank come off prematurely during Chris Harris's ride, and the horse kept bucking. It's what they're trained and bred to do. It's not something that's forced.
@thegreatnoldini
10 жыл бұрын
First off, it's not a "bucking strap," it's called a flank strap. It's just a sheep skin and wool lined strap that's placed over the flank of a horse. All it does is enhance the motion of a horse's bucking. It doesn't "make" them buck. They're going to buck regardless of the flank, but it encourages a horse to kick out straighter, which actually makes it safer for the animal, as they aren't stumbling all over themselves.

Well it doesn't cause that much discomfort. The equipment is made to be comfortable for the horses, and it isn't pinching them at all. If the horse is uncomfortable, it doesn't perform as well as it should. Also, the horses are incredibly tough, and even stronger. They don't care much about the spurs. They're fine. They're bred and trained for this.
@thegreatnoldini

@AnimalLeftist No one ever said a horse opening its mouth meant they were happy. I said it was so they could breath. It's intense work for 8 seconds, then they sit in pens and pastures or in horse trailers. Horses pant after being worked. It doesn't mean they need to be sent to a vet... the horses end up fine. There are horses that buck for over 30 years, that have their mouth open while working and so on. Pretty sure if they lived 30 years, they weren't treated like shit.
@thegreatnoldini
12 жыл бұрын
@AnimalLeftist It's not given a yank. There is a TON of slack in that latigo on the flank strap. It also loosens as the horse bucks.
@thegreatnoldini

@SoCuteLovely These horses aren't broken to ride. They are basically a step away from being wild. Without the flank strap they'll still buck, but they'd probably rear up more, and wouldn't kick as fluid, and it would be more dangerous for the animal. The flank keeps the animal safe.

What kind of logic is that? Veterinarians and ambulances must be on call, so obviously everyone WANTS animals and contestants to be hurt? What are you smoking? No! We care for our animals, and we love our animals. I raised bucking horses. I love them. We have vets and ambulances on call in the event that something does happen! Very rarely is an animal injured though. The animal injury rate annually is always around 0.0047% in the PRCA. That's all animals too, not just horses.

@MissSusieQ1998 Well the thing is the flank isn't even what makes them buck. It's what these horses are trained and bred for. It's just like how Holsteins are bred to give milk, how draft horses are meant to work, how thoroughbreds are meant to run. These horses are meant to buck! It's how they are bred and trained completely. They'll buck even without the flank and still enjoy themselves.

@horsieproductionss I didn't start rodeo until I realized it wasn't cruel. I got to see first hand how the broncs were treated inside and outside of the arena, and I realized that they were really pampered and have great lives. As far as being a horse goes anyway. It would be naive to say that cruelty doesn't exist in rodeo, because cruelty does exist, and cruelty exists in ALL equestrian sports. However, rodeo in itself is not a cruel sport.
@thegreatnoldini

@horsieproductionss A horse's first reaction to being scared is to RUN not to buck. I've been around spooked horses enough to know that. If the horse didn't want to buck for us, they wouldn't. Even with the flank strap. If they don't want to do their job they'll either just stand still, or they'll run. I've seen it happen to horses that people thought would buck with a flank strap on. It just doesn't work that way.
