Hey Jon. My husband and I did a Pedego Ebike trip with you in Washington/Idaho. Our paths seem to cross. Peter, my husband, just finished doing the base camp hike October 8-14. I did a separate 500 mile Royal Enfield Himalayan motorcycle trip around Nepal. Peter got sick like you did. Peter liked your summary that the trip was inspiring but not fun! I think my motorcycle trip was a lot more fun than you and Peter’s trip. Take care until our paths cross again 😃

Mount Everest did have a name, but is was (and is ) Chomolungma, given by the Tibetans/Sherpas living near it. The Nepalese name "Sagarmatha" is a relatively new invention, only 60 years old. The Nepal Government then realized that Everest had no Nepali name (Nepalese were not interested in it until trekking tourism started to pick up) and came up with "Sagarmatha". You should rewrite the script...
@marilyngunderson4229
Жыл бұрын
Although you are correct that the Nepalese government gave official recognition to the name Sagarmatha just 60 years ago, the name existed long ago among the Nepalese people. The mountain is located on the border of Tibet and Nepal. The Tibetan name is Chomolungma, the Nepalese name is Sagarmatha, and to the rest of the world Everest. No need to rewrite the script...
@karipintakivi9153
Жыл бұрын
@@marilyngunderson4229 It is not so clear cut. The people who actually live next to the mountain, Sherpas, call it Chomolungma, and they live on the Nepalese side of the mountain. Are they considered Nepalese? Yes (now) and not (in the past). The whole concept of "Nepal" and "Nelpali/Nepalese" has changed a lot during the past 100 years, or even 60 years. It is not a long time ago when "Nepal" meant only the Kathmandu Valley, this was the situation even in the fifties (Dr David Snellgrove et all). Great Britain had an embassy in Kathmandu when the height of Everest was calculated and the peak named, they could not find anybody who could have named the peak, there was no name for it in "Nepal". As Tibet was closed as was all of "Nepal" outside Kathmandu Valley also, they could not ask the people living next to the mountain. So we can not blame them for not finding out about Chomolungma (yes, some obscure French accounts mention it), much less Sagarmatha, if that name actually was used by some tribes south of Chomolungma.

@karipintakivi9153

@@JonConti Yes, but in the video you suggest that at the time Mount Everest was named Everest people of Nepal called it Sagarmatha, which is patently not true. The only people who even knew about the mountain called it Chomolungma.

Why did you go up via Tengboche when there is a much more impressive high trail on the opposite side of the valley? The Mong La - Phortse - Pangpoche High Scenic Trail offers vastly better views, lots of wildlife and practically no other trekkers. Tengboche can be visited on the way down.

@@JonConti Guides tend to be lazy and they choose the easiest and most convenient routes for themselves. Familiar lodges where they get kickbacks, where their pals drink rakshi and play cards, not the trails which would offer the best and most varied experience for the clients for the money and time they invest. Sad but true. Only a few avant garde western agencies have found the High Scenic Trail so far even thought it has been there far longer than the Tengboche monastery on the opposite ridgeline. The high trail is the original route towards Everest actually.

@@JonConti nothing worse than getting sick on vacation, especially on something that you have been planning for a long time. We went to Indonesia just as COVID was going into shutdown 2020, I got so sick for 3 days over there. Definitely food poisoning. My wife wants to go back next year but we decided to play it safe for a while and head to Cairns, at least there you can drink the water in the rainforest. And it's hot and humid all year long.
