Not knowing how your rudder is attached to your sailboat l will make this remark: on your rudder there's a fitting called a gudgeon with most likely has to rubber bearing that the rudder fits into. These bearings do wear out and need to be replaced. Play in the rudder just might increase. Keeping this in mind is important.
@jamescrego5904
3 жыл бұрын
Perhaps, but do barnacles/mussels thrive in those cold waters? Have you examined where your rudder is attached to your rudder post in the cockpit? Also move your tiller upwards as far as it goes and see if you can helm your rudder fully to port/starboard checking for any tightness or grinding sounds.

Hi Both, really enjoy following your channel. Love it when you say "it is what it is"...ha ha. Just a quick question if I can. I'm fairly new to sailing and learn a lot when you describe what you're doing and why. In the last episode you used the pole for your foresail and in this episode you used a preventer in case you breached. Could you explain why you did these things and how it helped. Cheers - Chris
@TheSailingBrothers
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris really glad you're enjoying the adventure. We used the pole to hold the Genoa out when we were sailing downwind, to help keep it from luffing EG collapsing all the time. And be rigged a preventer on the boom just in case we broached. When sailing downwind with the Genoa it helps to rig up a pole to help keep the sail full 👍

Luke I also use navionics. How do you know what type of bottom your anchoring in, you always know if its sand, mud or rock? I assume its to do with the different colour contours around the land? Also how do you chose your anchorages, recommendations or where people have pinned them on Navionics? Great video too lads 👍👍👍
@TheSailingBrothers
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Lee, sometimes it tells you on the charts S for sand M for mud etc. Sometimes there's no information on the charts whatsoever of the seabed. Then we turn to Google maps, if the water is clear enough you can see the seabed. If that fails we do a DIP test. You can lower a small anchor into the water on a long piece of line and bounce it off the bottom and you can feel whether it is sand or rock etc. Other people leaves anchor symbols on the charts where they have anchored previously it tells you whether it's good holding etc

I would have to say sailing into burry port harbor from wormshead more dangerous than sailing into harbor of stromaborvgills by John o groats having done both and bounced on the sands of burry port harbor inlet this weekend. My grandmother was born on Stroma. Best approach from the north east side of Orkneys. Tides are critical but not a dead end like burry port. The stream where life jackets try to prevent the inevitable. Is what they say of Pentland firth. You boys sail in the Bristol channel yes.The viking boats were ladened with salt two Kern stones and two angry kidnapped women who ground salt till the boats sank inevitable really one Kern stone is called stroma. Between stroma and swona the salts of the seas get mixed. Fair winds bachios check the ancient ancient dwellings on Orkneys.
