Opened in Washington, D.C., in 1855 as the Government Hospital for the Insane, the facility would ultimately become known as Saint Elizabeths Hospital. It played pivotal roles in the Civil War, housed numerous famous mentally ill people, and is estimated to have seen as many as 125,000 patients over the years; the facility still continues to be open and fully operational today., and it remains just a 15-minute drive from the White House.
