I personally could not hear a difference. If there were a difference to the sounds of the two woods it would be so small that even the slight difference in your playing, could make the difference to whether one was brighter or darker. In my personal opinion if you are a gigging musician playing on stage, the venue, the slight position change of your guitar mic, the type of guitar mic you are using, the noise level on the stage, the level of your monitors even, will all contribute more of a difference to your sound then the wood can ever. Even in the studio, the room that you record your songs in will make more of a difference then the woods can in your guitars. Of course this is all in my humble opinion.

It's not opinion, it's correct. The best test IMO is using an oscilloscope and testing the true signal. That shows variation between something as simple as one less copper wind on a bobbin. No matter which piece of wood holds it. Resonance on the other varies between woods/finishes etc.

Even if there was a percieved difference in tone in this experiment, it would most likely be due to the strings on the guitar and the overall setup; pickup height, string action, etc. I agree 100% with everything you said and i'd say it's more of a fact than just an opinion. Ya know... of all the tests I've seen like this, I've noticed that people always try to compare two guitars that are basically the same with different woods... Has anyone ever done a test where they bought 2 or 3 of the "exact same" guitar and done a comparison of those? I'm curious if that experiment would show slight differences in tone as well. I kind of feel like we're only hearing differences that would appear even just from building another guitar. Wirings can vary slightly, densities of same species of wood can vary slightly. I think it would be an interesting experiment. Max, how about grabbing another of the walnut version (since it's still stock), and test it against your current walnut to see if there are slight differences? You promote Wolf so well, and they're local to you, so maybe they'll let you borrow one or do a give away, so that you don't have to literally buy something that you already have.

Honestly, the signal could be controlled by the pickups, resistances in wire, pots, settings in amps etc... The most important thing is say is that if it is an electronic signal, I don't think it matters much. However, if you're playing yourself, you can hear and feel the vibrations from the guitar. That makes a big difference on how one perceives guitars. You could have bright pickups in a mahogany guitar, but you will feel the deep vibrations and will feel a bit muddy compared to the altered signal. I think the best test would be to place a mic close to a guitar not plugged in. It's similar to how a listener can't judge how easy a guitar is to play without playing it imo.

I never noticed a tone difference at different heights. But I have 2 very different guitars (Ibanez Darkstone, RG550). Indeed there's a difference in brightness that I can't discuss away since I swapped Pickups and soldered them straight to input bypassing tone knobs. Scale length is Gibson on the Darkstone, 25.5 on the RG550. That's the reason? Darkstone is brighter, always.

Distance between pickup and string definitely changes tone. Should be expected since it is measuring the magnetic field. Pickup farther away will sound thinner. Pickup too close will sound muddy or a bit like 'overdriven'. Age of the strings can also change tone. It could be a good guess that pickup height is causing the tone difference. There is definitely a very noticeable difference in tone. But I doubt it is from the wood panel top/back being different because that seems insignificant.

Hi Max! Well, I noticed that the walnut one has a more round sound than the maple one, which has a very pronounced mid range and sounds brighter, that’s because of the hardness and the natural composition of both woods, is like when you have a coa and or mahogany body versus a one that is made of basswood or ash, tonal differences are pretty much the same with this ones ;)

The neck looks almost identical, while the body wings are very different. My body wings are made of elm, which research revealed to me was a decent tone wood. They're shaped so that the entire affair visually resembles a Jackson Soloist. It's a far cry from a Soloist, though, although it's still a killer guitar in my book. It does lack the Jackson neck attributes -- no "compound" fretboard radius or speed neck profile here. That said, I REALLY like its neck anyway. Came to the door for less than 2 Benjamins. And it sustains naturally so well that it sounds almost like it's compressed!

At first I was thinking that because they're both neck-throughs with the same woods in the necks, it was unlikely that I'd hear a difference. I closed my eyes before you started and definitely heard a difference, but there could be something different about them other than the top and back woods. I think the walnut guitar is fuller and more balanced and the maple one is thinner, with more high end. Not higher highs, but less upper mid range. I don't concern myself with woods for tone on electrics though, and pick the woods on based on aesthetics, art, and a vision of the end product. I look to pickups, electrical circuitry, strings, and hardware, not to mention the amp for tone I saw a comparison with a neck and three planks of different wood. The guy bolted the neck on each plank and mounted the same pickups and did recordings. There was a difference. Seems natural that different woods vibrate differently, but there are just so many other more significant factors in an electric guitar that arguing about it is a waste of time. I just started building a Tele for one of my daughters and am using swamp ash for the body with maple for the neck. I'm thinking ebony for the fretboard, as I already have a blank and think it would be classy. I normally wouldn't use pine in a guitar, but I'm putting a book-matched lodgepole pine top on that I cut out of the forest myself for a local element. I'm also having a friend burn artwork in the top. She uses a soldering iron to do fine art on wood.

Do they both have the same kind of brand new strings? I feel like that can be huge. I’m wondering since the maple guitar is older (and I’m guessing so are the strings) if the tone distinction would have been more pronounced. IMO the crispness of new strings can have a massive impact on “brightness” and clarity. I could still definitely hear a difference, albeit not a major one, especially with the cleans. Edit: For clarity and perhaps TLDR- maple is brighter/crisper, especially when clean, but not by much. Curious if the older strings are holding it back from being slightly more pronounced.

The darker one has a wider frequency response, more low to low-mids. The maple one seems more choked off, almost AM-radio-like. The thing is when you do these tests, what you're playing matters. If you're doing single notes it's hard to tell. It has to be chords and chords within the range that has a different frequency response. So I only noticed these differences with midrange power chords and a bit on the clean tone strumming.

As for the tonal woods, when whatever percent of the guitar is maple, maple sounds like maple. Definitely, the maple was brighter in all examples but #3 (music was a more middle focused range) and one of the "clean" examples. In the clean examples, the difference was lessened. The people who don't notice are people that think mp3 sounds great and not a violent assault on the ears. Not saying one is better is than the other; if you like it and it is your "tone" then that is the inspiration you need. For a long time I just preferred mahogany bodies, I liked that aesthetic. Then I started playing ash and alder (and even basswood, ugh) because I play metal, and don't want to constantly be filtering out that bottom mud. For acoustic and clean, that bottom is golden.

They sounded the same to me, except on your first riff. The first guitar sounded a little more distorted to me.

I can hear the difference pretty well. I personally only care about lighter woods like Alder and Basswood, because they're more comfortable live than Mahogany or a heavier wood.

Yeah the Walnut wood guitar just sounds alot warmer and alive in sound !

I did hear a difference, but slight. Not sure I could pass a single-blind test, but definitely seemed to have a little sharper attack with the all Maple guitar.

These guitars are so similar that I it doesn't really matter. Sure, Maple is a hair brighter, but the overall construction of that guitar doesn't change too much with different tops from what I can tell in a listening test, and possibly not anymore than what might be an audible difference in the Humbuckers. My guess is that this is likely thanks to the multi-piece construction of the guitar, where the middle maple-mahogany center section is the same on both guitars, alongside the Ash wings. So in this case, it would be a choice of what looks better to your eyes. For me, I'd pick the walnut because of the contrast and black hardware, but the quilted maple also looks nice.

After some listening, I hear differences with the "clean" sound: The mapple is a bit "brighter" than the walnut. But, nothing with the distortion ! They are both amazing guitars!

i hardly could perceive a slight difference, on lower gain sound the lighter guitar sounded a bit brighter, but when you used a bit more gain, they sounded pretty much the same. i think that could also be down to more magnetic stringpull on the darker guitar from the larger and wider spaced pole pieces of the neck humbucker, not necessarily from the wood.

Agree, very close. Maple is slightly brighter while walnut a little fuller.

Actually the maple one sounds brighter and maybe with more midrange sound. In the 4:44 riff I believe sounds more clearly

I'm not one for tone wood discussions, and I didn't think I would hear much of a difference. But, yeah, the maple was slightly brighter and less harmonically as rich as the walnut. Still, both were pretty doggone close in tone.

I didn't hear a difference. I don't think tone woods are a thing.

There is a slight difference. Just wouldn't give it to the woods just yet. I'd like to know if there is any difference in the electronics. Pots and capacitors for instance.

I could hear a slight difference through my (not factory but not expensive) PC speakers, but not so much through my headphones (they're obviously DANG close)--but I'm kinda a noob so while I liked one slightly better than the other (the lighter colored one), I couldn't really explain why (yet).

Using Sennheiser HD433 headphones into my iPhone 7+ using the KZitem app, with one very notable exception, I could *barely* notice a difference that would be attributed to anything more than a small difference in the natural wood. Every guitar is a little different, right? The notable exception is the very first riff at 3:45. You *must* have done something different. Maybe selected the wrong pickup? The walnut sounded totally different (better) on that first riff. Like OMG different. [edit]I listened with my eyes closed. Also, listened to the entire set of riffs two times through.

It's not a huge difference, at all. I hear the maple top as slightly rounder but really more anemic, as though it can't push as hard and consequently isn't loading the amp the same way. Sounds a bit like when the battery is dying on a set of active pickups are . My guess is that it actually has to do with the pick up resistance or wiring. That's the only real difference I hear, which was surprising.

The walnut is so much more definite, clearer, i would prefer it clearly over the maple.

Maple definitely sounds brighter, but it took high quality speakers to hear. Still, would shred both.

The walnut seems to bit a bit warmer and have a bit more low end..More boomy on the chugs. The maple sounds a bit brighter, thinner and more focused on the chugs. I think this difference is negligible while playing in high gain but more pronounced when you're playing cleaner. Personally, the difference is not enough for me to choose one over the other based in the wood. I'd choose based on the looks; the walnut one looks better for me plus its lighter.

I heard a substantial difference the walnut sounds much warmer when you're playing power chords and fuller chords but there was a notable difference in every comparison. I like the walnut better I think. I listened with earbuds with dual 10mm drivers btw.

That's strange. To my ears, for strummed chords, they both almost exactly sound the same. But for the single note runs, they sound very different, with the maple pushing the high mids a little more (sort of like a Tele, or maybe a mid to high-output single coil alnico on a strat bridge). Or maybe my ears are shot 😂 Thanks for sharing this content! 🤟🏻

Well I can hear a definite difference. At first I liked the maple but for rythem I kinda like the darker one. But yes it's a minor difference. If I had to pick one to own it would be the darker one. 👍

Not brighter, but less compressed. Could also have to do with the neck humbucker in the walnut version causing more magnet pull. Single coil sized humbucker tend to sound a lot more mid rangy and modern because there is less room for the magnet to effect, whereas a full size humbucker is double the magnetic field. If it were a full solid guitar of maple and walnut than the difference would be a lot more apparent, but seeing how this is only a thin cap and I still hear a difference, I am completely surprised!

The only difference I heard was in hotness of the pickups. Although they're the same model, the maple guitar sounded a little hotter than the walnut. Which, from what I understand from trying to learn how to make my own pickups, is very possible
