A long time ago, in the land of Israel, there lived a man named Samson. Samson was very special because God gave him incredible strength. With his great strength, Samson could do amazing things, like fighting off enemies and even tearing a lion apart with his bare hands!
God had told Samson’s parents that he must never cut his hair because his strength came from his long hair. As long as Samson kept this promise, he would remain very strong.
The enemies of Israel, the Philistines, were afraid of Samson because he was so strong. They wanted to find a way to defeat him. They knew that Samson was in love with a woman named Delilah, so they came up with a plan. They went to Delilah and offered her a lot of money if she could find out the secret of Samson’s strength.
Delilah agreed and started asking Samson about his strength. At first, Samson didn't tell her the truth. He said, “If anyone ties me with seven fresh bowstrings, I’ll become as weak as any other man.” But when the Philistines tried it, Samson snapped the bowstrings easily.
Delilah asked again, and again Samson didn’t tell her the real secret. He said, “If anyone ties me securely with new ropes, I’ll become weak.” But when the Philistines tried that, Samson broke the ropes like they were threads.
Delilah kept asking, and Samson kept giving her different answers. Finally, after Delilah nagged him day after day, Samson told her the truth. He said, “My strength comes from my hair. If my hair is cut, I will lose my strength and become as weak as any other man.”
Delilah knew Samson was telling the truth this time. She waited until he was asleep and then called a man to shave off his hair. When Samson woke up, he had lost all his strength. The Philistines captured him, blinded him, and took him to prison.
While Samson was in prison, his hair began to grow back. One day, the Philistines had a big celebration in their temple to their god Dagon. They brought Samson out to make fun of him. Samson prayed to God and asked for strength one more time.
Samson stood between the pillars that supported the temple. With all his might, he pushed against the pillars, and the temple came crashing down, killing Samson and many of the Philistines.
Samson's story shows us that even though he made mistakes, God still heard his prayer and gave him strength in the end.
