Hey, I have this monitor too, and from my understanding the reason it cannot do 240hz with multiple monitors is a bandwidth limit on the 20xx series cards and display port itself. "Using DSC with HBR3 transmission rates, DisplayPort 1.4 can support 8K UHD (7680 × 4320) at 60 Hz or 4K UHD (3840 × 2160) at 120 Hz with 30 bit/px RGB color and HDR". So having the additional monitors impedes on the video cards ability to push out the max bandwidth needed to a single display port. Cheap fix is running the other monitors on a different card, or your mobo. This monitor really is beyond what graphics cards can do right now, and hopefully it is supported in the future to make it worth the investment.

I got one of the newer monitors since the new wave came in, directly from Samsung, but I cannot speak to dual or triple monitor setup though. Firmware is 1005.4 at this point, so there has been some updates from what was floating around. This may be the biggest difference is the firmware, but there was also no issues I have ran into as far as QA is concerned. There is no flickering or any of the other issues I have seen reported with this monitor. Maybe I got lucky? Or maybe Samsung tightened up on the QA? There was a delay though for getting it. I got it with this second wave of monitors to come out. The monitor I have very few qualms about it. It looks fantastic and works just as well. HDR works great but is certainly the weakness of the monitor compared to a full array local dimming monitor. I am not really complaining though as I believe it is the next best thing as far as HDR goes and the other features are more appealing. I will agree with you though about the monitor being somewhat shaky because monitor arms won't hold it and the stand works great but cannot lock the monitor down. I assume this is partly due to the curve throwing everything off center and making it much heavier than it actually is. The curve, the colors, the responsiveness, and the just the deepness of the blacks, I came to this from an IPS monitor, were the main selling points for me. The monitor has not disappointed in these areas. I would go as far as to say the 1000r is almost a game changer when gaming. The curve really does make things more immersive without doing VR for the total immersion. Simply put it has delivered on pretty much everything I wanted and I am very pleased with it.
@CodetheThings
4 жыл бұрын
Exactly on all of the points. The firmware is definitely starting to fix some of the issues (as well as the nvidia drivers). The wobble though, is something I have to live with as I don't really trust the arms to hold the weight. I think as I get a better GPU, playing games at full aspect ratio and resolution will be game changing. There are only a few games I play full screen at the moment. Obviously it won't be for every game, nor will it be for every user. Could you even imagine if this monitor was released as a micro-led screen? Pretty excited for future super ultra wides.

Nice video. I had the previous version (crg9) for a day or so but returned it due to i experienced text as "choppy" or blurry. But that's maybe just getting used to. But what you "need" to get a certain frame rate depends on the graphics and settings right? I run all my games at 60fps (max for my minitor) at 4K on my old 1080 card. Just lower the settings to medium or something like that. Tbh i can't see any difference from high setting. Of course there ARE differences but they are not big, and even less so in a fast paced game like DOOM imo.

I've actually been waiting on the 2021 version to release to do a cross comparison but the new monitor still doesn't have a release date. On that note, I think a lot of this is still fairly accurate. As a single monitor, 240hz 10bit works just fine. If you have more than 1 monitor, just give up on 240hz and it works as a 120hz 8bit. Keep in mind I have a 3090 so it's best case scenario and I still have plenty of issues 240hz with multi-monitor. Depending on what your budget is, the rumored 2021 is microled with ~800 lighting zones and hdmi 2.1. May be worth the wait. Either way I love my G9 for what it is. A freaking huge monitor.

Hey great video thanks for the information. I just picked up this monitor going from the Alienware 38. My biggest question in relation to what you touched on was my concerns of running cod. Originally I was looking for a way to have the screen just populate in the middle of the monitor leaving maybe some black bars on the sides. I know you mentioned that you can change the aspect ratio but does that still show the game on the full real estate of the screen from edge to edge. I was hoping that it wouldn't so that it would come down to more like a 38 in or maybe even a 32 in. I would love to hear your thoughts.

Hey @CodetheThings, I have a G9 with similar issues with multiple monitors, I run x2 27" displays above my G9 as well(PG279Q on DP and MG279Q on HDMI). A friend of mine told me that with the increased VRAM and memory bandwidth of the RTX 3090, this issue most likely won't happen. I planned on getting a 3090 to attempt to get the most out of this screen. Do you believe this issue will be resolved with a new series of GPU?
@CodetheThings
4 жыл бұрын
So even since that video there were additional nvidia drivers and fw updates to the monitor that helped fix some of the issues. I can run at 240hz now, but sometimes it still doesn't wake from sleep (not sure exactly where that problem is coming from). I was planning on getting a 3080 and a 3090 to side by side compare. I think current gen 2080 and 2080Ti should be about to push this monitor (maybe not the greatest FPS ingame at full resolution and aspect ratio). Definitely with the large jumps the 3080 had over the 2080Ti in 1440 and 4k gaming I'd imagine you would be just fine with that card. 3090 is really going to be geared around people video editing and doing intense rendering. Sure it'll be great for gaming, but might be overkill on your budget.

So I set the resolution to 2560x1440 and even with scaling no, nvidia seems to just stretch the image. I tried to reduce the size manually and best it'd let me do is something like 3840 x 1080. Probably not worth the hassle to toggle down even if it did work. Most games I've tried do support the aspect ratio changes.
@Xeroeth
4 жыл бұрын
@@CodetheThings Sure, thanks for checking that up.
@Recon13x
4 жыл бұрын
In my experience you can't do that for the OS resolution, but you can do it in the game you are playing which will make those black bars without stretching. UPDATE: turns out the display is not fully supported by nvidia yet. Turning off Adaptive Sync on the display enabled scaling on the display vs the GPU (you can see it in the Nvidia control panel) and that allowed games to correctly display with black bars. But with the Sync on, it gets weird at full res. Also games like Valorant will give problems anyway because of how they try to control resolution for competitive reasons.

I love it! That said, it's probably more expensive than it's worth unless you're finding it in the 1000-1200 range USD. The 240hz is unreliable at best and Nvidia drivers continually struggle to get DSC working. I'm on a 3090 and I gave up with 240 and run it solely in 120hz. Which... 120hz doesn't support 10bit color per nvidia drivers, so that's...fun. As a 120hz monitor it's great! I don't think I could go non-superultrawide for work ever again. Text, multiple windows and just overall functionality really help out in my line of work. I find it plenty crisp to both game and work with text all day, but some others have mentioned in the past they have to mess with the it to get a crisper text feel.

Hi. I have the same issue with my monitor going to sleep after some period of inactivity. When I return, I hear that my PC is on, but the monitor won't wake up. Before, I just used the same solution as you, applying a restart to my PC. But I found also that if left for some more time, it used to eventually wake up. Furthermore, what I found to be working is to use the monitors buttons to turn it off and on again. This seems to work every time. It seems to force the monitor to wake up. Nonetheless it is still frustrating having to do that. Now to the interesting part. I use the same monitor for my work. My laptop PC running Windows 7 is connected to my monitor via the DP cable. When using Windows 7, I have never experienced that my monitor doesn't want to wake up. Not even once! It might be some issue with the drivers or the monitors firmware or a combination of both. My monitor is the CRG9, yet I think that the root cause of the doesn't want to wake up issue is still the same. Furthermore, I am using the AMD Freesync, and it works flawlessly with my NVIDIA 2080ti. Some additional info. 1) From what I see, the HDR implementation in Windows is very bad. There are number of monitors that have the same issue with the colors being washed out when the HDR is turned on in Windows. 2) NVIDIA states that you need 452.06 or newer driver for G-SYNC on your Odyssey G9. Check out the link below: www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/products/g-sync-monitors/specs/ 3) I found the following information with regards to enabling 240Hz. "To set the monitor to 240Hz, you’ll first need to set it to 240Hz in the OSD menu. However, in order to get 240Hz at 5120×1440, you’ll need a GPU that supports DisplayPort 1.4 with DSC. DSC, or Display Stream Compression, is supported on AMD’s RX 5xxx series and NVIDIA GTX 16-series and RTX 20-series (or newer) graphics cards. Without DSC, you’ll be limited to 120Hz at 5120×1440 8-bit color and 100Hz at 5120×1440 10-bit color." At some other place (I think it was some info from Samsung) it was states that 240Hz requires a gpu from the RTX gpu lineup or a gpu from the upcoming AMD gpu lineup.

So for example Overwatch played at the correct aspect ratio 32:9. I'd have to test with cs:go, but most/all games I've played work at this aspect ratio. It's whether or not you truly want to play at that ratio is the issue. I tend to play most FPS down to 21:9 max just it's a lot to run on a card and take in correctly otherwise. Also, if this is your only monitor you should be ok with 240hz, I think the 30 series finally has DSC working correctly. I'm still running mulit-monitor and 240hz does not play well. That said, I do love my monitor and it's been amazing to game on and work on, but I wish some of the quirks would still get resolved (like why the heck can't I use 10-bit color with 120hz?)

Check to make sure your cable feeding the G9 is a 2.0 DP. I think your bandwidth is pushing the limits of that standard at 240 Hz. A multiple monitors issue probably has to do with the max bandwidth of your video card if this does not fix it.

The issue is becoming more clear as either nvidia drivers, samsung firmware, or both. It's improved applying updates to both, but there are still goofy behavior (screen doesn't like to wake from sleep with 240hz). I currently have the previos 1080p samsung version. I was so excited to finally get this one. It will be here in 2 days they changed the 420 candela per square meter, to 300 candela per square meter for the "rerelease". I really hope this works as I intend, I used to run my old one at 34 inchs for my PC and the remaining 15 inchs for my xbox and youtube. What scares me is you said it will lock to 60fps in PBP mode, yes the monitor says that in the settings, however if you check windows it prolly says 240? at least that was how my CHG90 was. I even tested the FPS and it was indeed 144hz even though the monitor said 60hz, is there any chance you could see this comment and confirm this?

@@CodetheThings When I turn on HDR mode on my PC attached to my OLED things are washed out as well though. When you shoot videos in a log profile it's the same concept but reverse, you're showing HDR content on a non-HDR display. The 10 zone local dimming probably doesn't help in regards to blooming with UI elements with the mouse. Speaking of blooming, seeing how poorly the q950ts performs in regards to blooming, I do wonder if the HDR is actually as good as you describe. There might be some detail loss in extremely bright scenes, where yes, the image is very bright and on first impression might look impressive, but you're basically hitting the zebras of your display so to speak. A good place to see this is usually if you point your camera towards the sun when it's passing through the clouds in a HDR game. Basically, the better the HDR implementation, the more detail you see in the clouds closer to the sun. Something like a HDR400 display will probably make all of the clouds and the sun look like one big blob of light.

The 27/32 has flickering issues, very tempted to get one , return it if needed.
@gencoserpen1260
4 жыл бұрын
I got the previous version of G9 (the 120hz CRG9). Flickering does happen on some games but I have traced the issue. When adaptive sync is turned on and your frame rate drops below 48 fps the monitor's LFC mode (low frame rate compensation) will kick in. Once LFC is enabled it will only disable when your frame rate moves above 60 fps - that is sort of a safety net to prevent LFC from being enabled/disabled too frequently. However some badly optimized games have a lot of frame time variance and if your GPU (or CPU) isn't beefy enough frame rates may fluctuate between 40-70 fps in a very short span of time. That will cause LFC to be enabled/disabled frequently and will lead to flickering. Just make sure you have a very powerful rig - as long as your frame rate remains above the monitor's LFC limit (I don't know what it is for the G9 - for my monitor it is 48hz) you should not get any flicker.
@Cons2911

Genco Serpen not sure if its the same with the new g7/g9, but the adaptive sync thing is the same, not sure for the LFC. Not too familiar with lfc, do they come together (as part of adaptive sync)?
@gencoserpen1260
4 жыл бұрын
@@Cons2911 yes LFC is part of adaptive sync. All Gsync monitors have it and the higher end Freesync monitors also have it. What LFC does is it basically doubles the refresh rate when your frame rate drops below a certain threshold. Lets assume your frame rate drops to 40fps - since a panel can't refresh at 40hz (it is too low) it will instead refresh at 80hz and each frame will be displayed twice. Because of frame doubling your eyes will still perceive 40fps even though the panel is refreshing at twice that rate. LFC is actually pretty useful, however each time it is enabled the sudden jump from low refresh to high refresh will cause a short flicker. If a game's frame rate fluctuates wildly around LFC's enable/disable thresholds there will be continuous flickering. Therefore the best thing to do is to pair the monitor with a high end rig and adjust gfx settings to ensure the game never drops to frame rates where LFC is needed (which is usually somewhere between 44-60hz).

great update. First impressions dont tell the real practical daily usage story. For me, the one thing i really love about this monitor is the 1000R. Everything else... i dont need 240 (140hz or 120hz more than enough) the HDR seems mostly unusable and thanks to you now i know about the wobbling. Thanks! Yes about the LG monitor. I've heard there is a fan and it is actively cooled, so you may have the fan noise if it's up against a wall. Honestly it's probably 'noisy for a monitor' and not 'that' noisy. But hard to say without having first hand experience with it.

Question: Did you update your Nvidia drivers? I've found Nvidia is REALLY struggling to get 240hz working. I have to keep running beta drivers for it to work. Click inward with the menu button to try and get it to come up. There is a setting to reset all, I have to always do that to force the monitor back to 120hz. I find 240 highly unstable and have just started using 120 as my daily driver. (this may vary if you are using ONLY the G9, as I'm a multi-monitor config). Anywho, if you look at all of the nvidia patch notes they keep listing 240hz, DSC, and specifically G9 issues. Mind you I'm on a 3090 now, and still have intermittent issues to the point I only use 120hz for the time being.

@CodetheThings
4 жыл бұрын
native resolution yes, but the caveat I've found I've needed to still trim the aspect ratio to 16:9 to get better performance in games. Now I'm a 2080 Super and I try to use ray tracing when possible. you'll most likely get ~mid to high 60 fps without limiting the aspect ratio or resolution on that game. You'll be able to push more with RT off for sure. With the announcement of todays cards... it's not a bad investment to bump to the next gen nvidia and find a buyer for your ti!

As a coder (I assume) how do you like the text quality and what changes have you made to cleartype etc to improve it? Tried out the CRG90 but just could not get text quality good enough due to the subpixel rendering and ended up returning it. Have heard that the G9 has improved but still not confirmed as many people seemed to think the CRG90 had good text as well (I am quite picky with text quality). Thanks.

Yes I am! So I believe the PPI is the same between both monitors so I'm going to guess they are going to be pretty identical experiences for you. Text really hasn't bothered me, so I haven't adjusted Clear Text and can't really give you a quality response back to that. Typically, I've just adjusted the color profiles of my monitors to ease eye strain, but the text itself hasn't been the issue.

@@CodetheThings Thanks for responding. Yes, PPI should be the same but the problem with previous VA panels has rather been the pixel structure than the PPI. Now, don't go looking for it and risk finding it unless you already have :)
