Who cares? You don't need local dimming to have a great viewing experience, even HDR, when you have a greater than 2230:1 contrast ratio. And for HDR content, that 1000 nit peak brightness makes the could-be-better minimum black level/backlighting far less of an issue in HDR.
@ptose
3 жыл бұрын
@@kevinboles3885 actually poor local dimming basically almost nullify hdr performance, since hdr is based on the possibility to show pixels with high brightness near other pixels that are extremely dark. That's why Oled today representes the gold standard in picture quality, even if it can't reach even 1000 nits (actually a lot less than that, if we don't consider the best Panasonic model). Because with Oled it's like having local dimming based on individual pixels, with amazing contrast and no blooming. A dark night sky with bright stars can look amazing on a Oled exactly because of it. 1000 nits with very few zones of local dimming is basically useless for a good hdr experience because the display can just be all bright or all dark (or like, half bright and half dark), with that terrible blooming that it's extremely noticeable in that test. It's good for tanning in front of a screen maybe, and to check a box for the producer that can tell to customers that he's selling a monitor with 1000 nits, but not for hdr.

First off your reviews are one of the best available, you go into lots of detail and do amazing side by side comparisons with other monitors and make LTT's reviews look amateurish. I have the Odyssey G9 (August build model) but i am considering returning it, i have the popping sound (Heat expand / contract) and i also consider the build quality / reliability / input connectors sub par on this monitor for the £1279 price tag. I also have concerns that long term the white back of this monitor will turn yellow in sunlight (Something that is never mentioned but effects white plastic). I also found the input cover back panel to be poorly made and difficult to fit when several inputs are used (Crush cables behind and force it to close and clip).

@@kevinboles3885 the issue is that some monitors on paper support 1440p at 120hz using HDMI, but I am seeing lots of people on Reddit with monitors that, on paper, support, but are only allowing for 1440p 60 or 1080p 120. Some are able to turn off freesync and VRR to achieve that, but that leads to tearing, and it's not ideal. I was looking for a 32 inch Asus VG32VQ, but on HDMI Freesync and VRR, according to Rtings, are limited to 85hz, so it's a no go. 27 inch is ok to me as I play around 1m to 1.2m from my TV. Plus I am at home office and also using the TV as a second monitor. There is no way for me to fit a 55 inch TV in my room, not even a 48 inch like the CX. I barely use my TV for movies, I either use the 4k TV in the living room or my laptop. The 27 inch dell is already pricy here, and it's bigger brother isn't sold here, so my options are limited.

I have one, this thing is buggy as hell. My experience with Samsung's firmware with this, multiple phones and TVs is that the company never cared to and continues to not care to make decent firmware. The specs and prices are highly competitive, but with the Odyssey G9 for example after my machine wakes up from sleep the monitor only runs at 640x480, I need to unplug/reconnect the POWER to the monitor every time I wake up my work laptop (reconnecting the display cable does not fix it, it's definitely the monitor). Similar story for where sometime it just won't wake up when my machine wakes up and the power button does nothing, like it's in a low power mode that stops registering button presses on the control stick.

@TheKingUpNorth
3 жыл бұрын
@Vincent Tuminello I STRONGLY disagree. As a former owner, I can attest the local dimming is one of the biggest drawbacks of this monitor. It only has 10 zones that dim. Compared to my TV of similar pricing, the Vizio PQ65-F1, which has a full array of 192 zones instead of just a couple of edge lit zones, there's just no comparison. And the G9's black levels end up being particularly awful in HDR since when even a small object enters a zone (as can even be seen in this video) an entire swath of the screen basically goes to full brightness. You just CAN'T get decent local dimming from the G9, so I question if you've used any other HDR displays for you to have that opinion. I implore you to check out other HDR displays to better understand the flaws of the G9 and to not simply try to change everyone else's opinion because you personally don't mind it.

Isn't there an issue with the PS5 doing 1440p? If it can't do that how could it possibly do 32:9? Also, I haven't looked into the details (because I don't care about console gaming much), but Gamer's Nexus has a post up about some of the RAM on the PS5 not being covered by the heat sink, and getting REALLY hot at 73deg F ambient. Warmer ambient could result in throttling or even crashes, and even without that the heat could lead to shorter useful lifespan.

I also experienced brightness fluctuations on desktop which are shown in the video at 12:59. It happened even with RTX 2080 Ti therefore I do not believe that integrated adapter has anything to do with it. I could see some weird horizontal lines at 240 Hz on the desktop. The lines were mainly visible on blue and orange colors in the top left corner and near the top edge of the monitor. You can google reddit or KZitem for "Odyssey G9 horizontal lines issue" to see how it looks like. My monitor also cracked/popped after I turned it off for an hour. I presume it was because of plastic expansion/contraction. Monitor firmware: 1006.2 It was N7 (July) model connected via supplied cable. When I wrote Samsung their support replied that they cannot help me because they cannot verify if the behavior is normal because they do not have the monitor…

@miladesn

800au is way too cheap for it. Make sure there is nothing wrong with what you are getting. The monitor accepts 4K60 input over HDMI from PS5. You can basically use half of the screen as PS5 output and use the other half with another console or laptop at the same time. Otherwise you will have a 16:9 screen in the middle of it followed by large vertical black bars. You should be able to get 1080 120Hz as well. It is not ideal for PS5 but it is usable. I think you can find cheaper simpler monitors to use with PS5. There are some coming next year with HDMI 2.1 that you can get 4K 120Hz from.

With 2200:1 contrast, the monitor does NOT qualify for HDR1000. To achieve HDR1000 VESA requires that the monitor have a maximum brightness of 1000 nits and a darkness level of 0.1 nits, so contrast ratio would have to be 10,000:1. It's clear that the darkness level of this display is about 0.45 nits. Since the local dimming on this monitor is a JOKE and everybody would turn it off, this monitor only qualifies for HDR400 or HDR500.

If local dimming is so bad according to him then why enable it during black uniformity test? But wait, he said local dimming in SDR mode does nothing so why was local dimming working in the black uniformity test? Rtings are sell outs, i cant trust them anymore. Also, on my G7 my local dimming works in SDR mode, with local dimming off i got 2130:1 contrast ratio, and with local dimming enabled I got 4025:1 contrast ratio. When testing contrast ratio with local dimming in SDR mode it has to be set to On, and not on auto, this is why he got same number in both enabled and disabled local dimming, it was set to auto, it stays off in that mode in SDR mode. Like I said earlier, RTINGS are sell outs, testing black uniformity with local dimming only lol, i think it just shows their true purpose was to make this monitor look bad.

1) FALD is an expensive add-on, 2) designing it in is an expensive undertaking, 3) the greatly increased price from #1 would reduce sales drastically, meaning #2 would never be recouped - even if it were as a second option, 4) designing a second line with FALD brings a large amount of extra costs too, 5) the fairly poor black level and light bleed would reduces the quality of HDR in any case.
