In November 2022, the FCC issued a Report and Order containing some updates to the EAS system, which include some minor changes to what the public sees for national tests and alerts as well as which source takes priority for alerts.
In September 2022, the FCC also issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking that would require stations to certify their EAS systems are properly protected when it comes to cybersecurity. We talk to Harold Price, president of Sage Alerting Systems, as well as SBE Regulatory Counsel Stephen Hartzell and Patrick Cross from Brooks Pierce about the current status of the EAS system, what is being proposed, and what compliance for stations looks like.
SBE Treasurer and Social Media Committee Chair Kevin Trueblood, CBRE, CBNT, leads the discussion, along with SBE Members Communications Director Chriss Scherer, CPBE, CBNT, providing the Member Update.
