They released an artbook and the devs sentiment is the same, the atmosphere is there but according to the artbook, 3 more areas are planned and did not make it through. Which they wish they can include including newer entities both neutral and hostile. Heck even all 3 areas you explore are supposed to be bigger, to the point they have names, in order: The Oblate Assembly (where the prologue starts), The Plains which also includes the Genesis Wall/Birthing Wall (as in literally the 2nd Scornguy is born from it), and Polis (that shiny almost clean temple area) and Polis was planned to be city sized, plains surrounds the Polis and all other areas. And the birthing wall is the literal wall that surrounds the entire area. Polis is directly in the center. (Which seems to be a theme like trying to polish or evolve a creature into a perfect being worth of reproduction and ascencion) It was planned to have 3 more areas between the Oblate Assembly part 2 (when you return as the 2nd Scornguy) and Polis. A different ending would have been planned as well, but don't expect a good ending, only more mindfuckery. One of the 3 planned areas would've explained why most of of Scornguy's people is dead, The Labyrinth is supposed to be where a civil war took place that killed most of them, the war was about Polis and what to do with it, as for why and what, the devs say they are not telling, and said just take a look at the soldiers from both sides and see for yourself which appears to be cybernetics vs evolution of flesh. The other area is the "Pit" which you might have an idea on how bad it can possibly be, and you're right. In the middle of it there's the literal tower of flesh that is supposed to connect to Polis (in game we ride a monorail to Polis from the Oblate Assembly which was not intended in the original plans) Plains was planned to be more detailed and an extended tutorial for stealth. In release there is nothing in plains, but in the artbook it's supposed to have wandering predators that you have to avoid since you have no means to defend yourself until reaching the Oblate Assembly. There is also a different plan between Scornguy and the parasite that infects him, as turns out Parasites are important and is mandatory for some "castes" to have them based on their role in Scorn society, warriors naturally have weaponized parasites for war which we know how it ended in the Labyrinth

Having watched many playthroughs now, I realized that there's a reason the combat is so frustrating. You can actually avoid combat 99% of the time. When you are suddenly attacked you can run away, and eventually the enemies will stop pursuing you, then eventually disappear.

I feel Gingy put it best in saying Scorn is more or less just an interactive art piece
@LandManShark
Жыл бұрын
From my experience, the primary message behind Scorn's graphic and metaphorical depictions of things like maternal death, stillbirth, and miscarriage is that, whether we like it or not, suffering (sometimes viewed religiously as a product of "the scorn of the devil") can be found anywhere and everywhere at all times. If you aren't the one suffering, someone else surely is and it will eventually be your turn to suffer regardless. At some point, for all of us, some amount of suffering becomes inescapable, but that doesn't mean that we should be willing to give up without a fight. In Scorn, you play as a nameless, faceless, voiceless protagonist who awakens in a strange place full of strange things and is left to solve countless puzzles with no real guidance whatsoever. This could be a metaphor for what it's like for an unborn child to attempt to make sense of its newfound consciousness. Very soon after the game begins, the protagonist is attacked by a large parasitic creature that, over the course of the game, merges with and weakens the protagonist. This could be a metaphor for a developmental illness. Despite this, the protagonist is inexplicably drawn forward to a doorway of light that lies deep within the mysterious maze-like temple that they inhabit. This could be a metaphor for the instinct to survive, regardless of the struggle, and the complexity of thought sometimes required to convince yourself that the battle is worth fighting. Ultimately, despite their best efforts, the protagonist is repeatedly maimed and injured throughout the game, culminating in the parasite merging with them fully, killing them just before they reach the door of light that they have been searching for since they first awoke. This could be a metaphor for the fact that, as sad as it may be, not all battles are capable of being won, but there's no way to know unless you were willing to fight in the first place. Through heavy metaphors like these, Scorn appears to depict the tragic reality that suffering is indifferent to us all, so much so that even an unborn child, having never drawn breath outside of the womb, could be afflicted with a grave illness that will consume them before they're given so much as a chance to see the light of day. But even that unborn child has the instinct to fight for its life; to try and survive; and so we should all strive to face our suffering, no matter how insurmountable it may appear to be, with a purposeful sense of self-preservation and a desire to come out on the other side saying "I gave it all I had." In my eyes, Scorn is a deeply uncomfortable experience that attempts and, in my opinion, mostly succeeds in conveying the message that no amount of suffering should convince you to submit and that, although it is sometimes difficult, painful, and unfair, life as a whole is a beautiful thing that we should always be willing to fight to preserve.

I love ur depiction, it can go deeper tho, when u include HP Lovecraft, Matrix and Zdzisław Beksiński. From unknowable entities u cant comprehend, to reality is pain, to human emotions merged into kapitalistic cold stoic machinery and architecture. And all of this is literaly depicted in the game in art, in puzzles, even ur character who doesnt understand shit (as u) and tryes to piece the truth which he cant even comprehend but still keeps living. This game blurs the line between game, art and philosophy. It has more to say outside of game, its not for everyone. I just hate ppl who shit on it and dont even understand it.

I basically expected a gorgeous, well-designed walking simulator with puzzles, so I feel like it lived up to what was wanting out of it. I've never taken so many screenshots of a game. The design and atmosphere is incredible.

I do wish it had a little more to it, but I also don’t mind spending full price on a studio willing to stay consistent with an aesthetic and tone unlike any other game and nailing it. This game is proof video games can be art.

This. I loved the game and feel it’s a solid 9/10 artistic masterpiece with cosmic horror I haven’t felt since first seeing the space jockey in Alien. The world drew me in and made me question but the questioning left me unsettled with all the possibilities of what could’ve happened. If spending $40 means we’ll get more work, content, and games from these developers then that’s a small price for me to pay in a disgustingly saturated and boring gaming market. They deserve all of the sales they can get and I hope it’s enough to let them fund another.

Very true but it still has to be a game. Like you can’t slap a few paintings into a slideshow and put some puzzles and expect people to love it. They just needed to market it differently

scorn is a game that heavily focuses on mataphorical themes of life and death theres an overwhelming amount of imagery showing birth and this whole game can even be seen as a metaphor to children being still born and the mother dying as shown by the dying world with all the parasites and even the ending to the game

I feel like this game could’ve been great if they focused more on the FPS/horror aspect instead of the puzzle aspect. I know that’s what the dev’s vision was for it, but I still feel like there’s a lot of wasted potential here.

I had such a great experience with Scorn, I was swimming in the atmosphere and adoring the art. I knew coming in that it was a puzzle game with a couple enemies so I wasn't disappointed at all. I do however think that its definitely not for everyone. I love the biomechanical art style so it was an easy win for me. I'm glad I got it on gamepass rather than buying the game. paying 14$ for this was great!

Videogames ultimately amount to an aesthetic experience and this is the prime example of one. Having it be a full-on action game wouldn't have contributed to the atmosphere that the developers were going for...

From my experience the “gun” is just a elaborate key for the “engineers” like the one we play as; the world were in was never meant to experience such events as these creatures that’s why there’s such little ammo and weapons but what we experience as we play is almost like a matrix type of thing where we don’t get told what we’re doing we’ve already been programmed to do what we must to keep that facility operating but it has a meltdown and we as the player go through events such as dying and being reborn to try and solve the problems we created

They need to make a book or something to go alongside it. The gameplay is alright and the atmosphere is beautiful but you don't do enough to piece together a cohesive story. I can tell they wanted to tell a story without words but they didn't really succeed.
@backwardsbandit8094

There isn't a story. It's just a creepy fucked up world based on HR Giger's art. If you do a bit more research on him then it might add some contextual clues. Basically he was sexually assaulted as a child and finds aspects of the human body, namely reproductive organs and reproduction in general to be disgusting, alien and freakish which is why he creates horror sci-fi influenced by that.

It's a glorified art museum in a game engine. If you watched live, not in this HEAVILY cut up form, or have played it yourself, it's extremely sluggish and unwieldy (Not in a good stylistic way), and is horrifically dull and boring when it comes down to the actual gameplay. You can only rely on the wow factor of a somewhat niche aesthetic for so long before you need some sort of substance to keep players interested. Even when there was a boss fight, it was horrendously simple, easy, and dull, with zero background environmental action, and literally no music or ambiance. It feels incomplete. It felt less like a game and more like one of those open world demos with enemies copied randomly throughout the world. Extremely disappointing for me, seeing as I've waited for it since it was first teased...
