Thanks so much for this! He looks so much more at ease now speaking about himself and his music; it's like he's finally found a glimpse of what he's been loooking for for the past 45 years and it has given him some inner peace at last. Anyway, I don't think anyone could ever claim to 'get' him, he's just on another level. The best description I've ever heard of him was here on KZitem: 'he's been to the future and is trying to tell us about it'. Thank you Scott, for existing.

Jacques Brel was a Belgian singer. He was born in Brussels in 1929. He died in Paris, in 1978. He sang in French, though he also recorded in Dutch (Flemish). Brel is one of the greatest singers of the 20th century. He was one of the greatest performers ever.

Interesting. My mom had always been a fan of his. She was always talking about him. She told me she saw him once pass her by whilst riding his bike. He wore a hat and sunglasses. not sure exactly where, i think Birmingham during the 1960's. She called out his name and he looked at her and smiled. She never forgot that. My mom passed away 5 months ago aged 81. Now her hero has gone.R.i.p both Scott Walker and my mom.x

When I was 14, many years ago, back in London, and in Tooting, the Walker brothers played there, I was totally succumbed by the Walker Brothers, and especially Scott Walker The Odium was next to our school yard so we often bunked over the wall after the shows. One time, at one show where we had front seats, Scott came in with his arm wrapped up in those old cloth roll towels, we were sad, Next day we bunked over the wall down on our bellies, to their changing rooms, there we found his blood filled towels, which we took, kept some and sold the rest. PS the School was The Holy Trinity from which I got asked not to come back for. Any of you remember those days. Living in London during the 60's was the best, and therefore can not berate my son or his children from wanting to explore the unknown in music However, at a latter show he introduced us to Jimmy Hendricks, this is to show how great of a person and a musician, I have followed Scott in his music and his intense need for discovery Rest in peace, you will always, together with Jimmy be part of my memorial history, in having being a groupie and meeting Scott, Jimmie Dave crosbie, etc. Long let the 60s remain. Keeps me young.

God - I didn't see this. I cringe when I hear clueless interviewers saying things like "recluse" to his face. I'm scared he won't do an interview again after he faces yet more banal questions. I'm amazed that he humoured her. He is still charming. I almost expect his eyes to have gone completely black after creating "The Drift" like some demon!. Seriously though, it is singularly amazing piece of work - truly stunning.

Walker’s career is quite unique in that it created an inherent conflict betweeen his need to create and express his music as a songwriter, and his positively enormous talent as a vocalist. He clearly focused on the former to the detriment of the latter. Commercial success was not important to him or he would’ve focused on it more, and that’s ok. But as a fan of his magnificent voice, I regret he didn’t choose to also sing songs, even written by others, where he could showcase the great singer he is.

Catholic schools used to get off Holy Days of Obligation, so for Ascension Day about 4 of us went with a packed lunch and our homework - we had 'O' levels coming up - and sat on the wall opp. their flat in St. John's Wood. Local people were very friendly as we were no trouble at all. Eventually, THEY came out and were very friendly and chatty to us totally non-threatening 16 yr olds, and because it was so un-hysterical we all managed to talk quite normally. Lovely happy sunshiney-day memory

You should get all his work, including the much underrated Walker Brothers. Compilations are always too incomplete to reveal a genius of an artist or band. And with Scott Walker you can't go wrong with any of,at least, his 60's stuff, or if you are more avant-garde, his latest offerings.

Odd that they skipped the Walker Bros 'reunion' Nite Flights which, essentially, is three solo records slapped into one package. Scott's mirrors Berlin Bowie, Eno and Iggy pretty well and, certainly, shades of what he's doing now are in there, too. Well, Scott, six years... six years...

@Chomuno Not to beat up further on you, Chomuno, but I did wince at your comment. Look, on one level, it's sad- part of the sadness of this life- that his beauty, the beauty he possessed in his twenties, is gone. But is he ugly? Hardly. I mean, does one find it hard to look at him? I really don't think you do. As a couple of people said here, he actually has aged well. So, I guess, I'm saying, mourn the demise of youthful beauty, but don't think of people as they age as as the living dead.

'Tilt', 'The Drift' and 'Bish Bosch' are progressively difficult records to listen to and, I'm sure, to have made. There is little point in making qualitative judgements about and/or comparisons of his post-'Climate of Hunter' material to either The Walker Brothers or to his Brel numbers. It's like comparing early to late John Coltrane or 'Hello and Goodbye' to 'Starsailor'. Both periods have so much to offer, but the later records are basically experimental in nature, and will not to be everyone's taste. His seventies solo albums were pretty awful, a period where he was clearly trying to be 'commercial', which several folk below seem to relish, but I wonder how many of 'em has even heard these records? In trying to do the bidding of Phillips and CBS, stuff like 'The Moviegoer', 'Any Day Now' and 'Stretch' were a reductio ad absurdum. The comments below about the later works being 'pure crap' are those of people whose mind have closed in a defensive way, and are resorting to troll-ish insults. Scott's late trilogy are disturbing works and are like nothing else I can think of. They make people feel uncomfortable. The samples of knives being sharpened on 'Bish Bosch's 'Tar' is a good example. A different dimension to 'The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore', but ultimately coming from the same dark place? One constant - great use of electric guitar. And, oh, the Voice!
