@@CadillacFrank Thanks for a fantastic story on many levels! The irony that Martin Short is (as I expected), "very friendly, approachable and a general good guy" and yet he parodies Jerry Lewis, a polar opposite personality adds to the hilarity of this skit. I most definitely would have been starstruck, or at least tongue-tied. I'll admit that my only familiarity with Paul Shaffer's musical talent is from many years of watching him as David Letterman's musical director in the 80s. I'll have to broaden my horizons. Currently, my only connection to Paul Shaffer and Martin Short is that all three of us were born in Canada. Very cool that you got to meet them both! “But the trends of the thing” is the funniest line in human history for a good reason. You can tell it's in there ONLY to provide the symmetry against the previous phrase, "not only to the fashion of his times." Short was smart enough to make a joke out of “not only A, but B” phrasing structure *by not actually having a “B” and showing it.* There is no new information you can symmetrically pair with “fashions” if you use “trend” because they’re synonyms. So so great! I wish I could sky write “Has always been a protester, not only to the fashion of his times, but the trends of the thing," all over the skies of the world!

Always loved Martin Shorts Ed Grimley,Jackie Rodgers Jr and senior...even the tragic accident with the tiger...my favorite was SNL where Howard Cosell played Ed's dad in the hospital...over the top always and that's what made our humor in the genx golden.

The fact that the track list includes several obscure songs REALLY sells the joke for music fans. I'd put this up there with Kids in the Hall's "Doors Fan" as one of the legitimately wittiest music jokes.

For context, this album costs $6.99 and Short was working SCTV IN 1982-1983. In 2023, that would be around $22.00 per album. So, not as cheap as it sounds today. But that's why kids today own a lot more albums on CDs or MP3 than their grandparents did when they were in their teens. Kids in the 1960s bought a lot of 45 RPM Singles, usually at less than a buck each. Prices didn't rise very fast back then, so I remember paying $5 -$6 for monophonic rock albums in the mid 1960s. Most stores around me only had Stereo albums in classical music, with most rock being in mono. When I bought the Beatles' (Stereo) White Album, it costs $10, which in 2023 would be around $83.00 for a double album set. However, it was one of the original numbered and stamped albums that I bought in a collector's shop.

At the time that this was filmed (early 1984), Martin Short was 33 years old (born March 26, 1950). I can't give an exact date for the filming, but the episode was released on February 14, 1984, so it was probably filmed shortly before that date. Yes, he is a comedy genius 😂
