what always amazed me about SCTV is that could produce such incredible comedy on a "shoestring" budget. At one point they produced SCTV in Edmonton just to save money. SCTV is still by far funnier than anything that has followed 40 years later

@@shawnwells5719 - But their respective personae were way different - Earl largely based on Buffalo, NY TV news legend Irv Weinstein, Floyd could well be a composite of various Pittsburgh TV news anchors ranging from Bill Burns of KDKA-TV to Don Cannon of WTAE-TV (who in later years would be more known for his own struggles with the bottle). Even Count Floyd was a composite - they keep citing Bill Cardille (a.k.a. Chilly Billy of "Chiller Theatre") as inspiration, but the accent was more in league with KDKA-TV's George Eisenhauer as "Igor" on a late Friday night horror movie series that aired in the late 1950's, "The 13th Hour."

Bill Burns, the Pittsburgh TV news legend, was known to down a few now and then, but maintained a perfectionist bent and professionalism through 36 years (1953-89) with the same station (originally WDTV, known from 1955 on as KDKA-TV). He, like Joe Flaherty, grew up Catholic. I've long wondered if Burns was Flaherty's model for Floyd as SCTV News co-anchor (as opposed to Count Floyd).

Whats with the bizarre timing of the laugh track? Was that even in the original broadcast?
@tomcollins4261
Ай бұрын
When the show moved to NBC, the network producers thought too many people wouldn't get the humor without a laugh track. The task was assigned to a post-production crew that was used to standard sitcoms, and had no clue about improv-based humor. They constantly added laughs in the wrong places. The irony is that the show didn't need the laugh track at all.
