Hey Doug, just wanted to let you know I've been binge watching your boat playlist. I'm half way through. You see I'm a maker and a doer, I shared some of my projects. But, I've recently been disabled with an unknown auto immune disorder effecting my muscles and joints. I'm not able to walk to my shop anymore, But at least I'm able to make it to the couch and watch your videos. Your videos help occupy my time and give me inspiration. I just turned 41 and have 2 kids and a wife so I have to beat this and get back to what I love. What you are doing is bigger than you'll ever know. Thank you. and keep telling me to get off the couch. 😀

Coast guard: Sir we need to inspect your boat. Doug: Boat, what boat? This sir is a trailer! Look here's my license plate!

i have to laugh having a run in with the CG after the captain pulled a wide turn and almost took the bows off 2 coast guard boats tied to their station dock. the entire station crew ended up on the harbor masters dock with their heads in the port holes. then the words came out of their mouths. can we go aboard and do a safety inspection. i can't repeat what i said.. but i managed to Bogart a dozen coast guards men from going aboard and doing a safety inspection. back story.. we were heading to be hauled to replank the bottom. 7, 2" pumps running more time on then off. the generator set had just overheated and died.. steam pouring out of the engine room port hole was a big tell. it was a heck of a 3 day trip.. when i got home my mom was there.. after spending 45 minutes telling her of what happened.. she looked at me and said you sure spin a good yarn. my broken nose and big lump on my forehead did not prove my case. as we were coming into the dock. i was standing on the base of the boarding ladder. there was probably 3 feet of water in the back of the boat.. the boarding ladder seemed to be higher than normal. i stood there while we drifted in closer.. i leapt off the boarding ladder.. i was so tired i fell asleep mid jump.. it was almost 4 feet of drop.. i hit the concrete dock with my toes and managed to catch myself in a push up stance but still broke my nose and got a big lump on the head. i am laying there on that nice cool concrete watching the boat drift toward the boat in front of us.. got up and ran the 40 feet to the rear line.. got it around the dock cleat. ran forward about 70 feet and tied off there. . forward to the bow lines.. back to more stern lines. and a lot more running to hook up 2 shore power lines..

Over the years I've watched this boat come together from flat steel plates to pretty much complete. It's been a joy going along for the ride. Many times we watched you fail, fail again, and one more time, but you never quite trying, and I'm fond of the quote that goes something like this: "Doug has not failed, he found 4, 5...10 ways that won't work." Many people would've given up, or not even tried. That's a shame. You taught us something very important- you can do anything if you put your heart into it, and your project doesn't have to follow the rules. If it doesn't fit/work, you figure out how to make it fit/work. I'm hoping to make the launch party. I'll move mountains if I must. Thank you for sharing such a fantastic journey with us. You've already changed lives and the best is yet to come.

Pro tip for wiring: label the wires at every point they come in and make a connection with a wiring number sticker. You then can put the numbers that you used on the wiring diagram for that box that you keep in your documentation. Sorry to say that you are going to want paper and digital wiring diagrams for each box, Doug, but for trouble shooting and making modifications, including Jerry-rigging in emergencies, those diagrams will come in handy and make the work of those that are trained to read them much faster.

@@SVSeeker Do you have video documentation for the wiring or is every box going to need to be probed and tested to figure it out?
@KnightsWithoutATable
3 жыл бұрын
@@Brian-mp6bg Yeah, that is why you have copies of the wiring diagrams in physical form, because it is going to break down at the worst possible time, in the worst conditions, and you are not going to have time to troubleshoot a vital system without a wiring diagram while under those conditions, let alone spend the time to figure out how it works by probing or watching a video of how you put it together. Electrical systems aren't like hydraulics or pneumatics. Those systems are much simpler to understand and troubleshoot with just a working knowledge of their functions. There is also the safety issue of having a live panel open while you are probing it while the sea plays 5 year old in the bathtub with your ship.

IMPORTANT.... Regarding the sensor... I'm not picking fault with whatever brand etc.. From experience the plastic threaded part will fail.. at the point between the thread and where it looks like a washer.. it cracks .. might be because of impact or old age or undoing or overtightening etc.. causing a 2 inch hole fountain .. ...... Solution.. I like actual sea chests.. instead of loads of through hulls.. With sensors some people have made sea chests.. or... The aim of this modification is to severely reduce water if sensor pops .. Make an adapter that will clamp on to through hull and be larger in diameter than the wire sticking out of the sensor .. made so that a pipe can be jubilee clipped to it.. and the other end of the pipe has a cap also jubileed on with a hole for the wire... You said there are other sensors.. do same.. also an external guard if any are outside the line of the hull... Do you have the correct bung on strings next to each through hull? Regards Mark.

Scrolled through the comments a little and didn’t see it mentioned, that breaker is a motor rated breaker. It protects from both short circuit and over current. You will want it set the dial for either the Full load amps of the motor or the FLA plus the service factor (usually what I set it at when doing a start-up).

Hi Doug. It will be interesting to see how long your Airmar Temp, Depth and Speed log lasts. There is an issue with these where the temp fails very quickly we are now on our third one in 5 years. The fail mode is the temp sensor shows hotter and hotter temp and re calibration does not work. First one of ours failed at 9 months. Second at 18 months. Quick google will show you you need to carry a spare. Sail Safe mate. Ant, Cid & the pooch crew.

The last one that died they said "Sorry, we don't carry the one with the electronic float switch anymore...we were seeing dozens a month come in so we stopped carrying them, we will swap it for a mechanical switch"....9 years and still going with that mechanical switch pump... Trailers are "easy" where I am...well, if our Secretary of State was open, but yea...we have a moron for a governor, and a bigger one as a SOS. Normally you go in, say "I need a plate for a trailer" and it's done, even if you wanted something to haul 80 Ton, except THERE you pay a onetime ~$100 heavy haul fee....so it's easy here, except you can't get into the SOS to do it...because "covid"...
