Love this shanty and this version of it. The slower version was always one of the best sung by drunken folkie crowds in the pubs of Melbourne Australia back in the day. People always sang this one with such feeling that even the most off key slurred wailing came up sounding like a harmony. Also enjoyed the tour of your music den. I wouldn't mind a brief introduction to and demo of each of your instruments...unless they are purely decorative of course lol.
@SeanDagher
3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I like this pace for this one too. Nice to hear about that kind of singalong in Melbourne. All of the instruments are real working instruments, but not all of them are in working order. The balalaika, for instance, needs a new bridge and tuning machines.

If the blood red rose relates literally, I imagine it being running blood from wounds, scuffs and bruises from the work? "Growl you may but go you must, growl too much your head we'll bust, you pinks and posies." Referring to the new recruits or people pressed into service who haven't grown callouses? Or, if they're british soldiers, it could be the hanging Johnny's making a return? *We believe what we want.* In any case, Thank you so much for these songs!

Halyard shanty, yes. But also a furling shanty. We used it while “bellying up “ to the yard. On each “hang down”, we would reach down for an arm length grasp of sail, pull it up and trap it with our bellies against the yard arm. When the shantyman sang the verse, we rested. Awesome song.

I'll tell her. It's a viola da terra, from Portugal (the Açores, probably). This one is a bastard because it has the neck and headstock of a gitarra and it is stung in 6 pairs instead of 2 triples and 3 pairs, like a VDT should be. They all have the heart-shaped sound holes and many have the vaguely flour-de -lys design below the bridge like this one does.

You refer to head canon and personal interpretations, and having never read about Blood Red Roses but only hearing a couple different versions, I had a totally different train of thought. I had always assumed that the talk of roses, pinks and posies was a tongue-in-cheek callout of the crewmembers working themselves red in the face as being wimps. Something like "Quit whining and keep pushing, you pansies." The "blood red" I assumed was due to blood rushing to their heads from physical exertion. Really interesting to hear the different ideas. I hadn't even thought about the red coats. You sometimes seem a bit hesitant to go on at length about the history, but I absolutely love that stuff. Thank you and more, please!
@SeanDagher
3 жыл бұрын
I think you are probably right about the pinks and posies, but who knows for sure. The theory about the roses is a good one. As usual, I don't think we need to decide what the real truth is (and nor could we,) we can just enjoy the possibilities.

One of my very favorite shanties. I learned it from the singing of Ewan MacCall & A.L. Lloyd. The tune is just a little different but their harmony on the pinks and posies part is wonderful. Your variant was probably used more than theirs back in the days of sail. Thank you. Oh-also there is a ballad about Napoleon 2 or 3 called Bonny Bunch of Roses O, which refers to Scotland, England, Ireland & Wales as the Bonny Bunch of Roses O. I used to sing it at the Renaissance Fairs in No & So. California. Thanks for all your lovely renderings of our beloved shanties.

@SeanDagher
3 жыл бұрын
I choose which ever one I feel like doing. Usually I combine bits of different versions. They are all authentic because there are no rules. Shantymen have always just sung what they wanted, as long as it got the job done. The versions we have recorded or written down are just a tiny fraction of what has ever been sung. I think a person can tell right away if they're sining something that honours the tradition, even if it's not exactly the same as any previous version of a song, and I'm trying hard to honour the tradition.
